I dated this Jewish girl in high school who had a mom sorta like this.
They were a really super orthadox Jewish family, the kind with 2 seperate kitchens and all that.
I could tell her mom really hated me because she kept prodding me for questions about where I worked, who my parents were and how much they made, what I was doing after high school etc.
She had this constant look of disgust and disdain on her face because here I was, this broke ass, fat, unattractive neckbeard wearing a Magic the Gathering tshirt, no job, no future, shit grades in school, but somehow her daughter still loved hanging out with me.
She'd invite me over for dinner here and there without telling her mom, so when i'd show up, her mom got super pissed off, but was too passive aggressive to straight up tell me to get out.
We'd sit there, eating matza balls or whatever, and there'd be this awkard silence for like an hour

I was just discussing this with my grandmother the other day. Protestantism has seen a severe character assassination over the last 30 years, while Catholicism has seen a softening in the public eyes.

What do people associate with Protestantism, particularly in the United States?

>the South
>anti-intellectualism
>racism
>evangelical money scams
>Tammy Faye Bakker
>Billy Graham
>rednecks
>Westboro Baptist Church
>weird white people with 20 kids

While the Catholic church has become associated with

>great architecture
>tragic heroes that still believe in god
>blue collar working people
>saints
>mythology
>mystery
>long history

The only real problem they've had is the reputation of the priests being kiddie diddlers.

When agnostic millennials start to find God in the next few years I think they will be drawn more to the Catholic church than the Protestant.

I don't think I can get her to go full papist but she's expressed interest in Episcopalianism, which really is just catholicism without the pope. Her major roadblock is the divinity of Jesus but I've been turning her onto some deist writings.

This must be how my forefathers felt, converting the sheep fucking pagans of Europe
>>

I was raised in the southern baptist church and I couldn't wait to leave. No sex, drinking, drugs, or rock and roll. Secular media was off limits. Satan was everywhere. I was miserable, and I blame my parents for being a virgin until I was 21. I was convinced I'd die if I had sex.
I joined an ex-xtian group, but that was like 20 years ago. I never would have dreamed it would become a neck beard movement.

I grew up going to public schools and still got reactions like that just because my family didn't go to church. It's actually kind of fucked up in hindsight; as soon as kinds found out my family wasn't religious, I started getting harassed enough that the principal called everyone into the office and basically told me to stop bothering them, even though I hadn't done shit. Since no one ever told those kids they were doing something wrong, they would still yell and throw shit at me for years, and I just learned to avoid them.

This happened in a part of the country that's usually thought of as liberal, too. Kids will be dicks about anything, but atheists/nonbelievers/whatever still get a lot of hate from most of the country.
>>

Ask her what she thinks about this line of reasoning

>the universe was created by something
>this something is "God"
>God was not created, and has a nature which does not adhere to deterministic concepts such as cause and effect. There was no cause for God
>If God could be explained he would not be God
>This God is not necessarily the Christian God
>But it allows for the existence of lesser deities that can affect time and space and even create races like Humanity, or our entire observable universe. This could be the Christian God.

This is the new thought process that has been developing on 4chan for the last year or so. Those of us who go into God debate threads seriously have started to come around to the idea of not only the Christian God existing, but the possibility of many deities. Logic does not exclude them when you get to the higher levels of thinking about the nature of the universe.

I grew up going to public school in the bible belt and the teachers would regularly stop teaching to preach their own personal sermon or go off on some rant about something like gays going to hell or people having sex outside of marriage or how crazy muslims are or whatever.

But it was the 90's so we all just took it as a welcome break from writing notes. Actually they usually were prompted to go off on the tangents by one of us because we knew how easy it was to set them off. Even thought it was the bible belt, most of us didn't actually give a flying fuck about religion or going to church.

She started getting it after we watched The Last Temptation of Christ though, so I'm trying to get her to read the book. It actually strengthened my faith in the divinity of Jesus so here's hoping.

Saying something (the universe) exists but was not created is illogical. You'd have to insist that time loops back around on itself or some other speculative notion of the nature of the universe.

But anyway
>You know that a universe most likely exists to you

There is no "most likely" to it. I know it with a 100% certainty. It's like, the only thing anyone knows. "I think therefore I am". Ever heard that?

Assuming was "created" because that is the logic you operate under is what is irrational. Things can exist without being actively created. "Created" is a dumb copout tool people like you use to explain away the enormity and complexity of space and time as if it NEEDS a creation to exist. The universe doesnt need to stoop down to your imbecilic level of understanding to just BE. You literally have no tools to prove it.
>There is no "most likely" to it. I know it with a 100% certainty.
No, you don't

Rather, the law is a narrowly defined reassertion of religious neutrality within French public schools.

This sounds great. How does it trigger you?
>>
>>81763741
Yeah, it doesn't mean NO RELIGION ALLOWED. Spearation of church and state doesn't mean that religious things aren't allowed in public places, it means that the laws cannot be made with religion in mind.

>>

Laws can't be made to promote a specifix religion or denounce other faiths. This does not mean nobody can make associative laws protecting religion or freedom of/from it. Again, from your own link you were too retarded to read:

But I don't see this line of inquiry going anywhere fast with you, so I'll say that if in their capacity they make decisions as an atheist, they are in that moment at least, an atheist.
>>
>>81764145

Who's?

None of this makes any real sense. Atheists are not a lobbyist group like Christians are, you seem to be missing that.

>And no one lobbies the fucking supreme court, who have lifetime appointments
Supreme Court isn't the legislative Branch, friendo. They preside on rulings of law...not write law. Even so, lobbyists in the US hold tremendous sway over Supreme Court decisions as well. We don't have a perfect system.
>precisely to avoid this problem
It isn't working.
>Merely about who makes laws.
Supreme Court doesn't make laws...

But massive Christian lobbyist groups put incredible pressure on lawmakers. This is a fact bud. They hold much more political clot than atheists, whom aren't organized and have no real structure anywhere to work as a political entity.

Hence: truth to power.
>>
>>81764452
>They preside on rulings of law...not write law
Legislating from the bench happens, it's the specific example I mentioned earlier.

I would agree about the truth to power statement, but I think it's a complete falsehood to pretend that atheists (or at least, atheism) has nothing to do with lawmaking.
>>
>>81764491
>Legislating from the bench happens
Buddy, again, this is illegal in the US. The branches are not structured this way, Supreme Court does not write laws. This is a phrase...not to be taken in a literal sense.
>it's a complete falsehood to pretend that atheists (or at least, atheism) has nothing to do with lawmaking.
If your argument that "any secular law is atheist, therefore atheists have power" then I guess so. But that would be retarded to reach in this discussion. They have no presence in the Senate, House or Supreme Court. I don't know where you get that they have any influence on laws. If that were so, the pledge would be rightfully banned and religious iconography would be removed from state properties and currency...which it should be, but it isn't.

Or there would be more respect for the separation of church and state...there isn't.

The evidence just isn't there.
>>
>>81764610
>this is illegal in the US
And yet it happens all the time, they have far too much freedom in "interpreting" the law.
>If your argument that "any secular law is atheist, therefore atheists have power"
Only the secular laws that go against the religious dogma you believe all these people have carved into their minds, plenty of which get passed.
These people, for the most part, make decisions as an atheist would, they listen to the lobbyist groups not because they share some nametag in common, but because they like money and being re-elected.

>got his start selling out jews (he's jewish btw) to the nazis
What tinfoil wearing /pol/ blogger convinced you of that? That's...retarded.
>>
>>81765177
Hence why I added
>(if you'd call them that)
Also it gets treated as equivalent to one in these surveys seeing as it's mutually exclusive with belonging to a religion.
>>
>>81765737
>it's mutually exclusive with belonging to a religion.
What are you fucking talking about?
>>
>>81765141
There are significantly more atheists in the US then muslims, your argument makes no sense. Christians apparently just hate atheists that much.
>>
>>81765552
Soros would be like, a child during the Holocaust. Are you pretending to be retarded?
>>
>>81765693
I didn't say that using facts makes your argument incorrect, merely that stated because you used facts your argument is not necessarily correct.
You stated that you have a bias AND facts, and while it is obvious that a bias does not mean your argument is correct, simply using facts in your argument does not mean you are correct.
>>
>>81765258
>fuck you people are stupid
Oh yes, totally, how could you have inferred otherwise?
>>
>>81765795
>simply using facts in your argument does not mean you are correct.
Right, my argument is correct AND it is backed up by facts that support it.

Nice attempt at a hair splitting though.
>>
>>81760829
(((yes)))
>>
>>81765838
>Right, my argument is correct
Why even bother posting if this is the sort of attitude you're going to have?
Is this a masturbatory exercise for you?
You just continue to ignore my rebuttal and repost the same thing.
Argument ad nauseam as it were.

It's pretty fascinating, to be desu. I started browsing 4chan circa 2007, then left for a while pre-/pol/ then came back maybe a year or two ago and no it's hilarious. The mindless contrarianism has reached critical mass. In an attempt to be less 'reddit', /pol/shits are unironically pretending to be conservative Christians.
>>
>>81760282
>had this constant look of disgust and disdain on her face because here I was, this broke ass, fat, unattractive neckbeard wearing a Magic the Gathering tshirt, no job, no future, shit grades in school
yea if my daughter was dating someone like that I'd do that, too.
>>
>>81765953
I ignore your rebuttal because it was dumb, I explained why it is.

Did you just learn about logical fallacies kiddo?
>>
>>81766004
> I explained why it is.
No, no you did not. You just called it silly and started jerking off.
>>
>>81766110
Scroll back up.

Do you happen to be religious?
>>
>>81766120
Scroll back up a bit further.
Right about where you said you were tired of the discussion before continuing it for another hour.
>>
>>81766157
Are you religious
>>
>>81766229
I've already answered this question.
>>
>>81759671
>be nerd
>spend all day talking about 'muh paladins'
>'muh clerics'
>'muh will of iron'
>see one
>be fucking terrified
>>
>>81766271
You didn't
>>
aaand this thread.. is a perfect example of why neither Moot nor Hiroyuki has ever considered creating a religion forum. it'd be like /pol/ times /a/ to the power of /s4s/.
>>
>>81766342
That sounds horrible, just let them stay in /x/
>>
>>81766327
>it's another "I forgot everything you said earlier in the conversation now let me berate you while I repeat the exact same shit I said earlier" thread
I'm outta here.
>>
>>81766445
Ok faggot.
>>
>>81766664
I wasn't involved with this, but you're an idiot - see >>81765224
>>
>>81766965
That doesnt make me an idiot, friendo
>>
>>81767031
You "won" your argument by pleading ignorance.

>>
>>81766422

>>
>>81767940
