Can anyone recommend any horror movies that are ACTUALLY scary?

I can't get scared when I watch horror movies but the thing is I haven't watched many niche ones mostly just mainstream ones friends and family wanna watch typical stuff you see in commercials and what not.

Some clarifications I do get scared when I play horror video games. Not all obviously but quite a few. But i've never really jumped, screamed, etc at a horror movie. Am I just watching the wrong ones? What am I missing?

Idk if i need to clarify games that have scared me or its just since games are more immersive you feel like you're there so its much more easy to get scared. Like why VR horror games are even more scary and bla bla bla.

Dark Water (the original asian version)
Great atmosphere and creeping sense of dread.
>>
>>81741996
Watched It Follows. Didn't think it was scary but didn't think it was a bad movie either. Just in an interesting concept. The Void is on my list tho.
>>
>>81741923
>story completely grinds to a halt while you fiddle with your inventory, wait through a load screen, search for something you missed, search for an easter egg, or simply have to replay a section

Video games are toys, not narratives.
>>
>>81741923
"But i've never really jumped, screamed, etc at a horror movie."

If this is what you're after you're looking in the wrong place. The best horror films achieve a sense of terror and dread using atmosphere, sound and visuals. Jump scares can be good for a little jolt but don't usually make a good film.

Games are different. Due to their interactive nature it's easier to immerse you into the role of the character. When things jump out they jump out at you, the player.

In film, a slow build and a sense of dread works much better. You may never scream, but you may be find what you see disturbing or unsettling.
>>
>>81742277
Well fine i've never really felt dread with a horror movie either but I have with a horror game/found things disturbing, unsettling, etc.
>>
>>81742165
The difference between a film and a game is that its an experience. You're supposed to feel like you're there. A movie you're generally watching from someone elses perspective.

And the experience is definitely much more important in horror. Narratives aren't scary.
>>
>>81741923
You have the original version of that pic?
>>
>>81742322
The Fly (Remake)
The Shining
The Thing
Alien
Halloween (Original)
Poltergeist (Original)
Rosemary's Baby
The Babadook

Just a few examples. Horror in film works very differently to video games. Games have to have a much faster pace due to their interactive nature, scares have to come much quicker. Films can take time to develop a setting and atmosphere over a longer period of time.
>>
>>81742443
Narratives are perfectly capable of conveying and creating any kind of emotion, including terror. Unless you're about to poo poo all literature as inferior to games as well, in which case you're trolling or thick.
>>
>>81742535
>The Thing
>Alien
>Halloween (Original)
>Poltergeist (Original)
Clarifcation. Which The Thing? The other 3 tho didn't scare me at all/leave any sense of dread but I suppose i'll add the rest to my list.
>>
>>81742693
not that anon but the thing from 82
it's really good
>>
>>81742535
I'd also recommend The Exorcist and The Exorcist III. Maybe The Exorcism of Emily Rose.

Shit, forgot it was a remake/had its own remake in turn. John Carpenter, 1980s.
>>
>>81742535
>Games have to have a much faster pace due to their interactive nature, scares have to come much quicker. Films can take time to develop a setting and atmosphere over a longer period of time.
Not him. Pretty sure its the opposite. Horror games can be anywhere from a few minutes to 60 hours long but most are generally within the 5-30 hour range which is much longer and spaced out than movies.

Some games are completely based around atmosphere expecting something scary to happen shitting yourself for an hour as you're waiting for something bad (but you don't know what) to happen.
>>
Descent
Creep(The one set in London)
Eraser Head(Not Strictly Horror)
>>
>>81742731
>>81742783
Actually never seen the original but alright sure i'll add it to my list aswell.

Btw I do genuinely want to find a movie that scares me i'm not trying to be a tough dude or anything like that and btw just because a movie doesn't scare me or leaves any sense of horror or dread doesn't mean I don't like it its just...well if it doesn't do those things doesn't that kinda kill the purpose of horror?
>>
>>81742616
the problem with horror in general is its always predicated upon people being really, really stupid.
>>
Horror movies are worth watching for reasons other than just being scared. If you want movies that make you feel dread or disturbed though I would second The Thing
Cannibal Holocaust
Phantasm
Maniac (definitely watch both the original and the remake)
Martyrs
Nekromantic
Audition
Last House on the Left
Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer
>>
The Void came out recently and is great. All practical effects, almost too much gore if you arent a fan but it's a roller coaster once it gets started.
Watch The Visit 2016 if you dont mind found footage style
The Shrine 2009 is alright
Black Mountain Side is pretty cool for a Low budget flick
>>
>>81742731
The Thing is good, but it isn't scary
>>
>>81741923
Blair witch doesn't get enough credit. You might not think it's scary at first, because it really is tamer and more controlled in it's spooks than a lot of newer movies. But the spooks aren't cheap, they truly are frightening. You will probably never want to go out into the woods alone again, because even if you aren't "scared" of the movie itself, it creates an atmosphere of fear that a lot of other movies just don't have

The best way is to watch a movie that caters to your fears. What do you fear the most? What scares you?

Candyman is the only movie that's ever scared me. I've also seen it on tons of other "actually scary" horror movie lists. I was a kid and it hasn't scared me in a long time, but it's still worth a watch because (aside from some small studio-meddling related issues), it's kind of an underappreciated masterpiece.

Silent House is also worth checking out. A lot of people seemed to hate it for some reason, but, depending on how you watch it, it can be pretty scary. The entire movie is built around following a character's experience through a scary situation, so if you can put yourself into that person's footsteps, the movie is very effective at building up tension and dread.

Its hard to say if any scene is truly scary but this was the most disturbing thing i've witnessed on screen in a long time. Maybe the most disturbing shit i've ever seen

I acknowledge its crappy but everything in that scene is stuff of nightmares. I understand the weeb fans are mad at that film because "omg its not faithful to animeee" but who gives a fuck, its still one of the nastiest things i've seen

Movie that scared me the most is probably Wrong Turn, but I was 11 or 12 at the time. Now I'm not sure, I've seen plenty of horror films since but most were interesting because of scifi or fantasy aspects. For pure spoopiness I'd say Prince of Darkness, or maybe The Visit or The Gallows despite all the plot holes, but mostly I'm most spooked by scenes from otherwise not-scary films. Like the basement in The Road or the end of Ex Machina.

That's being startled, not scared. Play a noise loud enough and have an image flash out of no where and you'll jump, but that doesn't make it scary.
