this movie copletely shits on original mad max movies. it's literally an empty, shallow, action-packed car chase with bad music.

if it wasn't Mad Max i'd actually hate it less.
>>
>>81734086

"[Black-and-white] focuses you on the content and the story, and it really concentrates your attention on what's in the frame. All too often, color can be a distraction -- it's easier to make color look good, but harder to make color service the story. Black-and-white imagery is much more about the balance between the light and shade in the frame, and I think it can help convey story points a lot better with fewer distractions.

Lighting is not only about lighting; it's also about not lighting, and cutting light off of objects as much as shining light on them. Those kinds of considerations are as important in colour photography as they are in black-and-white, but the sheer beauty of a well-composed and well-lit black-and-white frame is hard to beat, because it's difficult to produce that type of focus and simplicity when you're shooting in color. It's vitally important to be able to separate shapes and surfaces through the use of light and shade, and to focus the audience's attention on what you want them to see. Color is seductive, but it's harder to get past the surface gloss to create a truly simple and relevant image. I almost wish every film were in black-and-white"

tl;dr: Miller was trying to make the most visually pure action film ever made, if you understand anything about the editing and fraiming in Mad Max you can understand why he wanted B&W
>>
>>81734291
>this movie copletely shits on original mad max movies

The original Mad Max was a reationary fantasy about "crazies", weak government, no justice, and muh thin blue line.

Road Warrior was far-fetched stupidity.

Thunderdome was... Thunderdome.

This movie is concise, not overly didactic (despite the bleating of manchildren), and unpretentious. It's the superior flick.

>Accuses me of putting words in your mouth
>Proceeds to put a bunch of words in my mouth
You're a highly intelligent individual.

DLet's start over then. What is your argument? Mine is that though many in the thread insist that Fury Road does not need good dialogue or any at all to be good, and was in fact good because the lack of it, they are missing the fact that the film itself as a whole was poorly written. A lack of good dialogue is merely a symptom of the poor writing that the film tries to overcome with bombastic and "pituresque" visuals. There are films that are actually good with little to no dialogue and Fury Road is not one of them.
>>
>>81735238

Both are full sized vehicles, if you're on Facebook look up the page 'Cinematography', they have a video of the filming of the crash.
>>
>>81735319
So you could have just said that you think that Fury Road has poorly written dialogue, not that visual language is "chimp tier" which is a ridiculous, absurd and retarded statement.
>>
>>81735319
I joined the discussion about show don't tell vs expository dialogue entirely seperately from any Mad Max discussion. I couldn't care less about Fury Road, my argument is simply that if you can show something visually it is better than to do so through exposition.

You came in shitposting about my intelligence so I shitpost in kind, though it seems obvious that this was all entirely unneccessary

>>81735516
Shitpost? All of my posts were coherent arguments, yet all I got in return were insults and accusations of b8ing, not necessarily all from you but in general.

I agree that showing is mostly superior to telling through expository dialogue, but showing IS a way of "telling" a story as a whole. Think of good dialogue as "showing" a story because it gives us a way to learn more about characters and see into their minds. You can learn a lot about a person not by what he says but why or how he says it.

Though you can achieve a great level of complexity with actions alone like the silent movies, dialogue simply adds another layer of expression that can let filmmakers tell a more compelling and complete story. There are movies with all action and no dialogue that are masterpieces, and there are movies with no action and all dialogue that are masterpieces, yet if the core writing (for the entire film) isn't good, then no amount of fancy visuals nor dialogue will save it.
>>
>>81735633

>SJW plot

there is actually nothing SJW about it if you're a normal person and not a /pol/tard who thinks Immortan Joe is "redpilled"
>>
>>81734742
I've been thinking, /tv/. You kids like to throw words like pleb and patrician around like you studied film theory at the University of Quentin Tarantino. You'll argue over Marvel and DC until you're blue in the face. But I bet not one of you can tell me how Kant's theory of the sublime relates to Drive. If I asked you what your favourite films are, you might name The Dark Knight Trilogy or Star Wars: The Force Awakens. You'd tell me the cinematography in those films was excellent and how JJ Abrams' use of flashbacks mirrors our perception of memory. You'll praise Snyder as the epitome of philosophical, yet if I asked you what influence Kierkegaard had on Bergman's Winter Light you'd have to go to Wikipedia to look it up. Look at yourself, /tv/. I don't see erudite patricians interested in advancing their understanding of cinematic form, I see scared children hopelessly trying to convince themselves they're better than everyone else. No one could possibly understand the depths of you. Yet you have the arrogance to call others plebs. Why don't you go and do something with your life instead of making everyone around you miserable?

You're gonna' be convinced of that until next month when you get to Roger Ebert, then you're gonna' be talking about how the cinematography of Bergman and Kurosawa were experimental and surrealist way back in 1940. That's gonna' last until next year, you're gonna' be in here regurgitating Evan Puschak, talking about ya know, the Pre-Technicolor utopia and the kinographical forming effects of sound and colorization.

this movie is a 10/10 just for the scene where the guy has bullet teeth and he pulls one out to put in his gun

Really? so if the rest of the movie was my little pony except for that scene you'd still be satisfied with your movie experience?

Obviously you would, it was 10/10 xD

Of course that's your contention. You're a first-year film student; you just got finished watching some nouvelle vague cinema, Jacques Rivette probably. You're gonna be convinced of that 'till next month when you get to Godard's maoist period. Then you're going to be talking about how Truffaut's shamelessly became petit bourgeois after the 60's. That's gonna last until next year; you're gonna be in here regurgitating André Bazin, talkin' about, you know, caméra-stylo and mise-en-scène.

"Resnais's use of flashbacks mirrors our perception of memory"? You got that from Cahiers du Cinéma n° 97, page 98, right? Yeah, I read that too. Were you gonna plagiarize the whole thing for us? Do you have any thoughts of your own on this matter? Or do you, is that your thing, you come on 4chan, quote some obscure opinion and then pretend - you pawn it off as your own, as your own idea just to impress some virgins, embarrass my tripfriends? See, the sad thing about a guy like you is, in 50 years you're gonna start doin' some thinkin' on your own and you're going to come up with the fact that there are two certainties in life: one, don't do that, and two, you dropped 150 grand on a fuckin' education you could have got for a low ratio warning on karagarga.

unrelated but the amount of bait and shit posters in this thread is unreal. Why do fags get so anally annihilated about such a good film?
>>
>>81736005
This is my first post in this thread, of which I just did a brief read-through, so I'm coming from a neutral place here.

If you laid out a coherent argument in this thread, I couldn't find it. You say the dialogue in the film is bad, which alright, but then you claim that THAT isn't only what makes it poorly written, that it's poorly written "as a whole." The only support (that I could find) for your argument that it's poorly written is "because it knows it is and is relying on the EBIN visuals to fool plebs..." For a guy claiming you've laid out this convincing argument and criticizing others for not having an argument and demanding counter arguments, thou really protest too much.

If you really want to present an argument that the film was poorly written, I'd recommend starting with cogent reasons why written elements other than dialogue weren't successful. Because I would argue that part of what makes Fury Road great (and while I recognize that this is subjective, you should also realize that you're on the contrarian side here and probably have a higher burden of proof when it comes to convincing people why 99% of people who write about film for a living are wrong) is the world building and character design and the contribution to the Mad Max mythos and the stunning practical effects and just the sheer originality and atmosphere and etc etc. This shit wasn't improvised on the spot by a director saying whoa this movie is poorly written so let's put in awesome shit to distract away from that. No, the awesome shit was written too.
>>
>>81734461
100% this. Mad Max never had any actual intellectual or thematic center. Fury Road does, and that's not to mention that it simply has better filmmaking and storytelling than the preceding three films.
>>
>>81733165
it is, like almost all hollywood movies, a popcorn action flick. however, it is one of the best action flicks in recent history. the cinematography and editing is one of highest quality.
that said, an actual cinematic masterpiece still doesn't need good dialogue as movies are a visual medium.
