It's like this episode is what the Series 8 and 9 detractors thought Who should be. As a Clara fan it's sad to think, but maybe letting go of Clara, and the focus on her relationship to 12, was what the show needed to bring in more viewers.

And Capaldi brings a sense of Classic Who with him, the elderly, easily annoyed Doctor who think's he's superior.

Watching this episode actually made me realise just how much I didn't like Clara with 12. It's weird, it never occurred to me before, possibly because I do really like Jenna. She just came with so much baggage, I was so weary of her by the end.

I don't dislike it, but I do feel like there's a toxicity to the relationship. Rose essentially abandons her friends and family and throws herself into life with the Doctor, in the process essentially defining herself entirely as his companion. The Doctor, in turn, is old enough to know better - the relationship is a form of escape or regression for him. It feels like something of a mid-life crisis affair.

Yeah basically 9/Rose works really well because they need each other, but I dunno why 10 would love Rose at all. S2 was really weak in this regard and was only salvaged by Doomsday. S4 ruined Rose as a character.

I think 10 is obsessed with Rose because she makes him feel human, and gives him a sense of belonging. I think that's why he invites Mickey along with them in GitF, and why he finally has Christmas Dinner with the Tylers in CI.He gets a family, a home beyond the TARDIS, and to an extent, a people again - hence his love of pop culture. It was always doomed to end, but he desperately wanted to believe in it.
