I agree. Anything so dominant can take a few punches and western Christianity certainly deserves a few, but I don't think that's really a fair view of Christianity. Politicians slap on a nominal Christian label to secure votes. Very few politicians ever actually promote Christian belief in policy and those that do tend to be the few and far between fundies like Ted Cruz who are so fanatical that they put themselves at odds with their own party.

I have a tangential interaction with a lot of Christian organizations doing international aid (never missions, but usually educational, construction, or social work in nature). And most of the churches I see are struggling with attendance numbers. Most of the Christians I interact with are deeply conservative menonites or quite socially liberal environmentalist Christians. And they all seem to get along somehow.

Secularism has thoroughly usurped Christianity as the dominant cultural force in the states. It's not even close. Many churches have secularized in an attempt to stay relevent which has alienated the more fundamentalist crowd. They still have power to an extent, and voting numbers, but at this point mocking Christianity seems like beating a dead horse. They're just like any other religion. Individuals with beliefs. They aren't some super powered unshakeble cultural force that must be analyzed and ridiculed. They're people. And they're people who tend to give a lot of money and manpower to aid. So they're pretty ok group in my book.
