They are good for containment, I'm sure i'd see a lot more GoT threads without them. The problem is you run out of things to talk about, so everything devolves into namedropping people in the thread or shitposting. And smaller generals trying to get by will spam bumps and other annoying shit. I think they are incompatible with regular boards, but /vg/ is a great board for people who only play one or two video games at a time.
