It's interesting how all the behind the scenes bantering actually influenced the script. In the original draft after Batman beats the joker into telling him where Dent and Rachel are, Batman actually rescues Rachel.

However whilst making the film everyone realised that this made no sense, and so in the film Maggie is left to die whilst Dent is saved

Another fun fact. On the day of shooting when the scene designer was asked to get Heath out of his trailer to replace his stand-in for the lighting check-ups on set she accidentally brought Maggie Gyllenhaal instead. Apparently the crew wasn't entirely sure which one of the two actors was supposed to play the Joker. That confusion actually lead to rumors about TDK when some people assumd that Heath Ledger was actually playing The Riddler because Maggie would have been such a great fit for the joker.

Those were not Rachel's last words but Maggie's interpretation of the character of Rachel. What she was actually trying to do was sing All Stars by Smash Mouth. Nolan cut her short in the editing room.

The 2005 film "Brokeback Mountain" was originally planned to be a hetero-romance story starring Heath Ledger and Maggie Gyllenhaal.
Ever the professional Heath decided to spend some time getting to know Maggie to try and create some form of chemistry which could be used on screen, due to a natural attraction obviously being impossible.
However upon meeting the Gylenhall family, Heath came to the realisation that the story made no sense when her brother Jake was far more attractive, and thus lobbied to have the film changed to a homosexual-romance so he wouldn't have to kiss Maggie.
This caused a great rift between the two actors and many crew members on the set of "The Dark Knight" noticed there was still tension between them even 3 years later.
The line "hello beautiful" was actually a very cruel adlib on the part of Heath.

In a recent interview with James Spader, Spader stated that his work on the 2002 film "Secretary" was the lowest point in his career, and tested his acting abilities to the extreme.
Not only did the actor have to pretend he was merely attracted to Maggie Gylenhaal, but indeed that he had a full blown sexual arousal.

The make-up team simply could not understand why they had to spend so much time and money using prosthetics to make the comparitively gorgeous actress Emma Thompson into McPhee when Maggie was right there on the set with no additional work needed.
Eventually it was revealled that Gylenhaal had dirt on director Susanna White and was blackmailing the director into giving her the role.

The reason why The Joker is Batman's greatest enemy is because The Joker is using the EXACT SAME METHODS as Batman. He's pretending to be an insane criminal to mask the fact that he's a schemer and master strategist.

When Bruce Wayne first began, he failed miserably as an anonymous crimefighter because he was just a man fighting crime. The same skills, ... but the criminals were always confidant they could take him on: he was just another man. So he created the "Bat-man". Suddenly, criminals were scared of what he could do. Many in Gotham honestly believe Batman isn't HUMAN. Others believe that no matter what you do, Batman has a weapon/strategy to stop you. GODMODE VIA PREPTIME. That's how well Bruce Wayne has pulled off the "Batman" concept. Through theatrics and misdirection, Batman cannot truly be predicted.

The Joker does exactly the same. By *pretending* to be insane and commiting ridiculous acts at any random interval, The Joker is *disguising* the fact that he's just another clever criminal. Every step of his plan has been carefully planned through the ingenuity of a Chess Grand Master, but he covers it with seemingly insane moments of random madness. The clothes, the behaviour, the sheer unpredictability... "You cannot predict what The Joker will do". YES YOU CAN. That's why Batman always beats him.

This is why they are arch enemies. The Joker is aware of Batman's methods and works to outmanuever him. Batman also studies The Joker's actions and recognises which were feints and distractions, and which were clues to his REAL plan. A master strategist hero and master strategist villain, using the same methods of misdirection and theatricality to succeed.

...but no, people are all "Joker is Batman's opposite because he's truly insane, and a force of chaos lol".

If you are playing a particularly dark or crazy character that wouldn't normally laugh it's extremely hard to go completely in and out of character between takes and burst out laughing. You naturally keep that same sort of demeanour since you have to get in that headspace to a degree.

A good example is Kramer., he barely ever laughs because what he find hilarious he as a character has to react as if it's normal. If you watch the bloopers you can see Michaels can't just break character to laugh easily

Nolan wouldn't actually let Maggie wear any makeup of any kind on the set when filming The Dark Knight. This is because the Jokers makeup was based on Maggie's normal day-to-day makeup, and allowing Maggie to wear her makeup Nolan feared it would make Heath's character much less intimidating.

Drew Russell was originally going to play The Joker from his Joker Performance audition.
However, Heath Ledger started going on rants and even started threating Drew Russell.

The "Hello Beautiful" scene was the first scene which Michael Caine saw Heath Ledger in his full costume.

It was also the first scene involving Maggie Gyllenhaal. However, Maggie's appearance was intended as a prank - to have a moving, animated wax skeleton witch standing in place of Emilie de Ravin, the actress who was originally cast to play Rachel Dawes. A haunting, cruel juxtaposition. But Ledger went along with the prank, continuing the scene and saying his famous "Hello beautiful!" line without breaking character - a feat that Michael Caine said he had never seen, heard of, or even imagined could be possible. At the last minute de Ravin was replaced with Gyllenhaal because Caine convinced director Christopher Nolan that such an incredible accomplishment of an actor should not be relegated to a blooper reel. It should be noted that the inclusion of Gyllenhaal forced Caine to demand that all of his scenes with Gyllenhaal should instead be greenscreened and added in post later, so he would not have to physically look at or speak to her.

In the original cut of the film, Nolan wanted to use half f Maggie's face as the model for Two-Face, but it was later decided that seeing Maggie Gyllenhal's face on that close to Aaron Eckhart's would scare any children in the audience and so they ultimately went with the Two-Face design we know and love, which was considered far less repulsive.
