Is a good soundtrack inherently a gimmick? Or is it equally valued in the elements of filmmaking
its optional but if the director decides to put in a soundtrack then he has the responsibility to make the soundtrack fit
gimmick or not if it's a "good" soundtrack then why wouldn't you be happy with it
Music can be a device for a specific emotion if done correctly, but poorly fitting soundtrack can detract from a scebe
Depends on the movie, a lot of hollywood movies the soundtrack is just a cliche way of manipulating your emotions and making you think certain scenes are better then they are because of the music.

Film is an audio/visual medium.
Can you imagine sorcerer without that based as fuck tangerine dream OST? Or a carpenter flick without his synth score? Fury Road and Birdman went out of their way to make the soundtrack Diagetic. Or how about that tense as fuck high note from the dark knight when the jokester is asking about scars.
It's not the most important thing, but when its good it adds a lot to the experience.

TSN soundtrack seemed kind of gimmicky even though I loved that movie. It's not like I hated the soundtrack either, it just felt jarring and out of place at times especially during that whole Facemash sequence
Are movies gimmicks, or is there more to them?
Movies are all gimmick,
I mean, throwing together visual and audio elements together while fooling viewers into believing it is some sort of 'cohesive' experience is just pathetic.
Koyaanisqatsi wouldn't be half as powerful without the soundtrack.
