A real hard sci-fi space battle would probably involve ships that are thousands of miles away from each other taking long shots over the course of months. Planatery warfare would be even more interesting. Each ship would speed up and launch its projectiles, which eventually land months later. There is no reason to get close to a planet when it has a fixed orbit. You could even get creative by accelerating asteroids into the planet. Instead we just get this pew-pew lazer bullshit.

What you're describing is probably true, but that's not a space battle, that's waiting. How do you create excitement in a space battle when weapon launch and impact are so far apart you could grow a bushy beard while you're waiting? More authentic pew pew is probably the way to go rather than actual realism.
