Why do they push this so hard? As if they're doing something no one else is. I think it's cool that like kids can enjoy female characters but recently Star Wars is really trying to get some validation for what should just be the norm. Well done, you've created female characters
>>

They really want girls to like Star Wars.
Is it working?
Is there any data to suggest that more women like Star Wars now that the last two movies have starred women?

From my generation, the only chick that liked SW was my sister; her 2 daughters hate it.

I really don't see it changing.

I guess the...trans crowd then? They seem to love it.
>>
>>81566092
This is what i've been thinking. Do kids (their main demographic practically) really care about the social side of things? I feel like they are more interested in the story telling & the action than if a movie stars a strong female role. Why should females only relate to other females? Did girls have trouble understanding Lukes problems in A New Hope because he's male?

These are problems middle aged people have taken upon themselves to try and fix when no one really cared

I occasionally have these arguments about karma with whomever around that actually believes in karma. And often they'll mention something they saw on facebook about some kid "doing the right thing". And they'll point out all the good shit that happened to them as a result. Then I'll point out that this kid mde a video of themselves humble bragging and the Karma they got in return is just shit loads of donations from suckers or people that want to brag themselves about helping someone out. If this kid hadn't made a big deal about it no one would have noticed or cared. and they definitely wouldn't be getting their trip to wherever or the tuition crowd funded like they are now. At this point I'm usually called a cynical ass in one form or another.

A business works under the same principle. I'm SURE, 100% positive there are businesses and CEOs and presidents of companies that are just basic nice people. They give to charity, they have programs to help the community, they treat all their employees well and equally. and no one gives a fuck because they don't have a viral marketing campaign showing what nice people they are. While on the other hand every other back stabbing, water polluting, job exporting, racist, sexist, hooker murdering, sociopath spends millions in add revenue to make sure you know every time they give a kid some change for a candy machine.

tl:dr
It doesn't matter what you do, what matters is what people see you do.

>>
>>81566797

>>
>>81565993
I think some of you are overthinking this.

Star Wars has some female fans, but not like the Marvel stuff does. They're trying to broaden the appeal of the brand long-term (get little girls into Star Wars, and they'll be future customers).
>>
>>81566802
>that projection
>with the tryhard reaction

kek
>>
>>81566325
It's not for kids "caring about social issues", it's them trying to figure out how to get girls into the Star Wars brand.

Marvel studios worked it with equal opportunity sex appeal with good looking guys and shit (and the unexpected bomb that ended up being Tom Hiddleston's Loki).

They don't exactly have anything similar in Star Wars at the moment; they're trying to go the female protag route.
>>
>>81566774
That is fucking retarded. Does she just disregard the majority of the fans because they're male? Her whole arguement is "you guys had the original trilogy so now its our turn". Did she think 0 girls ever enjoyed Star Wars before The Force Awakens?
>>
>>81567014
I'm a girl and I didn't enjoy SW until TFA.

Check and mate.
>>
>>81566977
I get it, I just wish they'd find something else to squeeze money out of rather than raping a pretty beloved movie franchise
>>
>>81567014
I'm a SW fan and I wasn't a girl until TFA,

Check and mate.
>>
>>81567014
For Force Awakens, 70% of ticket holders were men between 18-40-something. That's not bad, but that means there's a large untapped market they want to break into.

Female protags are a way to do it, as most guys aren't going to give a shit one way or the other, even though most women over a certain age aren't going to give a shit either.

Getting interest from female youths may create a bigger pool of fans in the future, though. Still early to tell whether it'll pay off, though, same as Microsoft giving a small fortune to acquire Minecraft (to get potential future customers early on)
>>
>>81567099
Eh, it hasn't hurt anything so far (female protags). Rey is fine (though still not explained enough on why she's the way she is), and what's-her-face from Rogue One is just as boring and bland as all the other characters in that movie.

Maybe that'll change, but nothing bad has happened yet.
>>
>>81566974
So he pegged you in one, right?
>>
>>81567145
No, Rey is definitely shit and TFA is a worse movie for it. It's also fuelling furious debate between retarded trannies who are way too invested in pop culture and media and people who think the new direction SW has taken sucks ass.
>>
>>81565993
Kathleen Kennedy said the focus is on drawing more female fans. She admits that males don't matter because they'll watch either way.
>>
>>81567110
You keep repeating this and it's simply a false belief. Little girls don't give a fuck about this stuff, no matter how many women are in it. How many girls are into Metroid because the protagonist is a woman? How many of them watch slice of life anime like K-On? How many of them give a shit about any male-oriented action game/movie or hobby just because it's got females in it?

Marvel is flopping with everyone, by the way. Women didn't suddenly start buying Marvel comics because the SJtards had their way with writing white men completely out of story lines and plots. Don't be fucking ridiculous.
>>
>No Imperial story
FUCKING
DROPPED
IM SICK OF FUCKING REBEL WANK GIVE ME EMPIRE WANK REE
>>
>>81567145
I think i'm more worried about the future of the movies themselves than the cast. I can really see Star Wars just becoming like Marvel, just shitting out souless movies made by people who don't have any love for their craft and just want to make a shit ton of money. My room is littered with Star Wars but I know for a fact that in a few years i'll just start to hate the franchise
>>
>>81567145
>Rey is fine

No. She's terribly written and terribly acted. And she actively hurts the movie. No amount of backpedaling in the sequels will justify the poor decision making that was her character in The Force Awakens.
>>
>>81567256
>You keep repeating this and it's simply a false belief.
I never claimed it was MY belief, I'm stating why they're likely doing what they're doing.

It's the same as with race. There are plenty of black dudes that don't give a shit whether a superhero is black or white; they fucking love Superman and Batman.

I'm saying it's a purely marketing thing from movie execs who seem out of touch about what people care about.
>>
>>81564776
>Maz
>still has a shitty voice actress that sounds like she's doing a bad impersonation of an asian character
lol
>>
>>81567416
Going to just have to agree to disagree here. I found her very charismatic and fun. My main issue with her is that she could do everything way too damn well, and unless they explain why in the next movie, it will get annoying over the entire trilogy.

>>81567331
You and me both. I'm enjoying it so far, but I'm fully of the belief that they'll make everyone sick of this brand. I'm no RLM fanboy or anything, but Rich Evans basically hit the nail on the head with how Star Wars (despite being a sci-fi which could span multiple worlds) is extremely limited on what they can do with it, where even if they churn out Marvel crap all the time, they have enough different shit to make them unique from each other in some way (despite being formulaic). They're going to kill Star War over the next decade if they don't slow down.

Jinn whatever was bland as fuck, though.
>>
>tfw overheard my niece talk about how "no star wars is a boys thing, none of the girls like it" when TFA came out

>destroying an amazing franchise and pushing a political agenda that won't even work

what a joke.
>>
>>81567331
>becoming

We're already there.
>>
>>81567503
having a female protagonist is not "pushing a political agenda"

let's not get stupid here
>>
>>81567494
Her over-competence and lack of flaws really hurt the film. Other characters were made to look pretty dumb and redundant for her sake. Finn was the biggest victim of this. And Daisy Ridley didn't do much for me. In some respects she's worse than Hayden Christensen. Though both had to deal with terrible material.
>>
>>81567602
Fair enough. The reason it worked for me was because the "they keep flashing back to some mystery background for Rey", so it lead me to believe that there's some reason that she's as competent that she is that will get revealed.

If that doesn't happen, she'll be a complete shit character, but I can see why it might bother others.
>>
>>81567494
I read a rumour that they'll be taking a 10-15 year hiatus from main story after episode 9 so a whole new audience will be around for episode 10 which would be fucking amazing (if only they didnt spam us with origin stories in the 10-15 years)
>>
>>81567724
Could be good if they go that route.

As much as some of their ideas of origin stories annoy me, I do actually want to see Ewan McGregor do an Obi-Wan movie. Despite me not caring too much for how the prequels turned out, he was a bright spot in the prequels, and think he can do a great Obi-Wan with good material.
>>
>>81567567
Yeah, that's all it amounts to, what they're doing.
>>
>>81567703
>Fair enough. The reason it worked for me was because the "they keep flashing back to some mystery background for Rey", so it lead me to believe that there's some reason that she's as competent that she is that will get revealed.

When could this have possibly taken place though? She looks like she was about six y/o when she was abandoned on Jakku. How much could she have learned and who would have taught her? Are we about to get another chosen one type character?

And think about things like this: Kylo Ren, the man who personally slaughtered a new batch of Jedi and sent Luke (the man who defeated Darth Vader) into hiding, is completely rekt by someone who hadn't heard of the force until a couple of hours before the fight. That's hard to stomach even with Ren's wound.

I think she would make an interesting villain. But Disney wouldn't go that route.
>>
>>81564851
Because it looks like garbage?
>>
>>81567892
100% agree on the Obi Wan story, I've been wanting it for so long and Ewan is just the right age to pull it off. Why are we getting a young han solo movie? It will be so weird having this new actor pretend to be a young harrison ford. Why did we even need to know minor details like how Han & Lando met? Some things are left unsaid.

Another idea I would like would be a Plagueis & Palpatine story. It would be so great to have a movie through the eyes of a young palpatine rather than generic hero #52 like Jyn
>>
>>81568079
It's a shame they never made Plagueis instead of Snoke in the Sequel Trilogy. It'd make a lot more sense and ties all trilogies together. Deep down I'm hoping Snoke is Plagueis but they'll never do it. Would of been great aswell.

TFA comes out, people know him as Supreme Leader Snoke

TLJ comes out, Revealed that Snoke is a title he gave himself and is actually Plagueis, vague backstory dialog

Plagueis & Palpatine backstory movie

then episode 9 to finish us off

i think it is astonishing how this miniseries for little girls from a multibillion dollar corporation looks even cheaper and bland than early 00s flash animations like star wars gangsta rap.

Identity politics aside, the art style looks like shit.
How come they took such a huge step back from the art style of TCW and Rebels?
You'd think they could put in some more efforts into the art style for a shorts series.

Back to identity politics : it's really not serving women's cause to have such an ugly art style for you female driven animated shorts series. Even as a kid I was able to tell when a drawing looked like shit and wouldn't watch cartoons with obviously ugly art styles.
>>
>>81577021
But Tartakovsky was making the show because he wanted to not because he wanted to pander to a gender demographic. There was no agenda, just a desire to make an amazing product.

And interestingly enough, no women complained about a "lack of representation" (even though it had Ventress). Maybe because no woman watched it because women don't like Star Wars.
>>
>>81565993

Push what hard? Marketing their media towards girls? You do realize that half of the population is girls right? Like if someone sold soda and said "hey, I notice that we're going really well with boys, why don't we just try and appeal to girls as well" would you find that odd?
>>
>Maz
We want the grandma audience.

Also none of these bitches is black. Considering they are trying so hard to be inclusive and diverse, can we complain that they are racist hypocrites?
>>
>>81575809
It's concept art you retards.
>>
>>81577108
It's just weird that they are trying to force Star Wars this hard. And specifically because so far there hasn't been anything about these characters that make them relevant as female. For example Rey and the Rogue One chick, both of them could have easily been male and the story wouldn't have changed at all.
I don't know much about Ahsoka but it seems like she could have been a dude as well and the story wouldn't change much.
To write strong female characters with a stress on "female" you have to make them into characters that wouldn't work if they were replaced with a male version of themselves. I understand that women need characters to identify with at a young age, same as guys do, but these characters don't have enough depth so far. Maybe this show only has shitty animation and the writers are actually good though. But I imagine that Kathleen Kennedy will butcher anything good out of it and just ask for more pew pew and strong women mindlessly kicking stormtrooper ass.
>>
>>81564776
It's banking off that Monster High wave. DC's doing it too. Girls won't want Star Wars guys but they're down for Star Wars Barbies.
>>
>>81577187
I'm not talking about how choppy it is, it's just that the drawings look like no amount of animation will make them look appealing. And if it's nowhere near as ready, I mean if they won't look like this at all in the end, why bother showing them? I think this art style is going to stay and it's going to suck.
>>
>>81577108
>"women are half the population"
So are men. So should we start advertising women-beloved franchises to men? Can there be a male Sex in the City? Golden Boys? A bunch of other rom-coms I don't know about?

>"b-but men don't like that shit!"
And women don't like Star Wars. The thousands of Star Wars nerd gags who were bullied by women for liking it confirms that.
>>
>>81577206
How would have Star Wars changed if Luke were a female? I agree that these women character's are being underwritten but at the same time I find myself asking if I'd even be asking these questions about gender if they were a male character. Nobody even thinks about gender until it's a woman. I'm not trying to sound condescending or anything either I'm just curious on other's takes.

Probably because men don't make a big deal if the main character is a man. If the main character is a woman women go "WOOT A WOMAN CHARACTER OMG SHES AWESOME NO MATTER WHAT 18993 REASONS WHY REY IS BETTER THAN LUKE"

Men don't try and force male main characters because they're men. Women make female characters BECAUSE they're female.

I have no problem with female main characters, it's the agenda behind it that bothers me.

So... what characters are young boys supposed to ''care about''? Han Solo is dead, Luke is old man, Finn is a clumsy, bumbling buffoon. Poe has some charm.

Or they are supposed to connect with characters like General Hux, Director Krennic?

I wouldn't mind if the creators didn't have to point out "AND THEY ARE ALL FEMALE BY THE WAY".
I think Luke would have worked perfectly as a woman. But I think that his gender doesn't play any role in the story besides the tension and love triangle between him, Leia and Han. If they didn't want to go with a gay/bi route they could have made Luke as a girl and Leia both be attracted to Han or something. Or Leia a dude.

>Star
>Wars
Really, the reason why women don't like Star Wars is literally in the name. "Strong women character" won't do anything for young women because no one cares about the characters, it's about the story.
Young women love 50 shades of Gray, young women don't care about Ghost Busters or Tomb Raider.
Just have a romance movie between anakin and padme on Naboo with a little bit of kinky shit going on and they'll get all the teenage girls, all the soccer mom and all the nerds who'll masturbate to it for the years to come

Finn you doo doo head.

When I grow up, I want to be black just like him.

>connect with characters like Hux and Krennic
Yes because white boys are inherently evil and should live to serve the benevolent brown woman who seeks to dismantle their web of oppression. White boys should be shamed until they kill themselves.

this is sarcasm btw

I am serious - if the reason behind these female characters is that little/young girls/women have problems with connecting to characters like Luke, Han... then where is the new Luke, new Han. According to their logic, they have no role models/idols...

They'll care about Kylo and get frustrated that despite working hard he gets rekt by an untrained woman. The going back to the schoolyard they'll realise how much physicaly stronger they are compared to girls thus raising a new generation of frustated misogynists
>>
How does someone even relate to Rey? Do you have to be a white british war refugee?
How does someone relate to Jyn Erso? Do you have to be a homeless woman who's been in jail and now for some reason likes Star Wars?
I really liked Mara Jade from the EU, too bad she got wiped out of existence.
>>
>>81577536
Seriously though, it's simply because they don't care. Your confusion stems from misunderstanding their intentions. It's not about "giving everyone role models- yay equality!" It's about giving GIRLS role models. Disney doesn't give a fuck about men and boys.
>>
>>81566092
its a good idea i think.

they assume boys and men will like star ways anyway since its sci fi and star wars.

and they get girls and women to like it because it stars women.

double the money.

>So should we start advertising women-beloved franchises to men?

I see no reason why we shouldn't. Only reason we don't is because we've yet to figure out how to.

I mean, you try figuring out how to make men like Twilight or some other cunty bullshit and see how far that gets you.

Maybe women don't like Star Wars and find the entire concept unappealing. I'm sure if that's true then Disney will just stop trying. The reason they are trying is simply because most of Disney is female oriented. I mean if I invite a girl over for dinner and a movie and ask them what their favorite Disney movie is, most of them are happy to sing every fucking line from Mulan or whatever.

I think the new Luke and Han are Finn and Poe (though not specifically, they're just new good guys). I really like Poe, I like reading his comics, they don't deal with his homosexuality though.
>>
>>81577543
So Kathleen is just a smoke screen and Disney is actually carrying out Walts campaign against the jew?
>>
>>81577652
Well, I disagree with you marketing girly shit to men but at least you have a consistent argument.
>>
>>81577654
Poe is a shirt lifter?
>>
>>81577206
leia and ahsoka are literally the only good female characters in all of star wars, simply because the character was more than just her gender.
both actually had a long story arc with character growth.
can you say the same for rogue one lady who is just supposed to be tough despite being told what to do throughout the entire movie.
or rey who just runs around doing everything herself effortlessly, which would be fine, as strong characters can still have growth mentally, but she doesnt even get that.

kek
I guess not. From the comics I get the vibe that he doesn't want to come off as homosexual (or heterosexual either), he's not flamboyant AT ALL. He only cares about his morals, his friends and the cause of the Resistance. I'm asexual and I sort of feel empathy with his character for the gay thing I guess (he's clearly gay as shown in TFA). His attitude is cool in the comics too, he seems humble and doesn't act like a hot shot, he puts himself in the same level as the rest of his squadron and is nice to everyone.

What? I thought Battlefront 2's Campaign was about the life and times of an average clone trooper

>Female lead for Episode VII
>Female lead for Rouge One
>Female lead for Battlefront II
>Female only show starring all the female main characters from their various series because having the limelight wasn't enough and they still need more

This is a parody of feminism right?
>>
>>81578035
Battlefront (EA) sucked and they are already making a new one?
>>
>>81578291
well of course. They are tricking hopeless fans into thinking that they actually tried to make the new game better than the last one.
