He had a gun on the table witha silencer ready. he was going to shoot him in the doorway and call a cleanup crew. The fight is what happened after he failed. But the initial plan was kill this fucker with as little mess as possible.

why did he even need to kill the comedian again? its been awhile but I remember that he wanted to frame Manhattan for the attack on brooklyn to stop the impending nuclear war with russia but why exactly did he need to take out the other watchmen who were retired
