No nation is ever "great". This is the biggest lie we've ever told ourselves as a society. Nations are nothing more than a collection of people and there are no great or small people- just people. People can do great things yes, but they can also do evil things. As nations we tend to do too much of the latter.
And why are Americans so obsessed with being the "greatest"? Why are other nations? It's not a fucking competition. This is life, this is humanity. We should be trying to be the best that we can and if we are, then it doesn't if we're the "greatest" or not. Let's drop the jingoist bullshit and start acting not like Americans or Chinese or Russians but like human beings.

Many Americans know this too, esp in the last 15 years as we've watched so many things go wrong that it is becoming hard to ignore. Endless wars of choice, ballooning deficits, the failure of our health care system (high prices, inhuman and terrible coverage), the illusion of democracy shredded (the plutocratic nature of our government is much more transparent now), blatant election fraud, etc.

Everytime Obama (who I voted for) gives a speech about this being the greatest country in the world I want to puke. He doesn't respect us enough to be honest with us. If a president said 'we have serious problems we need to work on' that would be great. But we never get that. We get baseless platitudes which assume we are too stupid to understand what is going on in the world while the real problems in this country go unsolved year after year.

Except you've mistaken 'great' for 'good'. To be great means to be powerful or having done impressive deeds. Alfred, Alexander, Pompey and Catherine weren't called 'the Great' because of their progressive social reforms or gun control. America dominates the world militarily, economically and culturally and has done more to shape the world than any other contemporary country, perhaps any other country throughout all of history. For all intents and purposes it is the greatest country in the world and this is coming from a non American.

I don't know if America is or isn't the greatest, and I wasn't making an arguement either way.
Also I feel it is worth mentioning that despite America being founded on those principles it was obviously hypocritical. For almost a century slavery was legal. The majority of the country didn't have legal equality until the second half of the 20th century.

Because the US is a culture of consumers. Its the largest population on the planet with extra income to throw at frivolous luxuries. Even the poorest percentage of US citizens own smart phones with internet access. Sure, China and India have over 1bil each in population. But what % of them can afford the goods and services being peddled? Its why ever foreigner with a decent idea and half a brain will always try to get the product to market in the states. Its why English is a the most popular 2nd language on the planet. It behooves any entrepreneur to learn it bc it instantly multiplies their potential customers. It's why Americans don't have to learn a 2nd language. The rest of the world will conform to the US if they want to succeed in the market place.
