In the penultimate episode of the sixth season, the inefficacy of talk therapy on sociopaths becomes an important theme; Melfi's colleagues, and eventually herself, are convinced that Tony is a sociopath and that the years of treatment have been counter-productivve. The article which they lean on implies that sociopaths use animals and babies as a tool of manipulation, to practice their act on psychologists. But the viewer knows that Tony has a genuine care for animals, not just superficially (to appear sympathetic): I don't think Tony even tells Melfi of the night he spent in the stables. In short, I think Melfi's decision to discharge Tony as a patent on that basis was incorrect.
AJ, on the other hand, exhibits all the traits enumerated in the article. He feigns interest in foreign affairs and wars to his parents and his psychologist, while showing a clear disinterest when the charade cannot be used for manipulative purposes. When his car explodes, he doesn't experience a sense of symbolic cleansing, ie being cleansed of his father's blood money; he just thinks that explosion looked cool. When Bobby dies, AJ's first reaction is to use it as yet another way of manipulation, pitying himself and hoping Tony will fall for it yet again (followed by one of the more satisfying scenes in the show as Tony pulls him crying off the bed). His time at the therapist is used to refine his manipulative qualities; in the family session he uses his improved abilities to heap an enormous amount of blame on his mother.
A case could probably be made that AJ is a weaker, dumber, reflection of Tony. But I think AJ is the true sociopath of the family.

>The article which they lean on implies that sociopaths use animals and babies as a tool of manipulation
From my understanding it said that sociopaths have feelings of empathy but only to animals and children. Long time since I saw it though so I might be wrong, but that's how I understood it.
Also it's an interesting theory. He does feign interest in a lot of shit he doesn't care about but I think this is countered by his (seemingly) genuine love for his girlfriend and her son. Lots of teens pretend to care about stuff they don't in order to fit in to be honest.
>A case could probably be made that AJ is a weaker, dumber, reflection of Tony. But I think AJ is the true sociopath of the family.
I always saw him as somewhat of a polar opposite of Tony. Weak, timid, non-aggressive, no interest in achieving anything etc. The one thing they have in common is egoism and self pity, but other than that they're very different.
so do you think jackie jr would have been given a pass if the robbery wouldn't have gone wrong? he was still jackies son and ralphies kinda stepson
>>81542482
The viewer also knows that Tony haven't changed since the beginning. He gets a bit better after getting shot, but then goes back to his old habits which ultimately leads to his demise
Who here cutting while watching sopranos?

Doesn't he feel genuine remorse for attacking that black kid?
>>81542482
You've got to bear in mind though that Tony and Carmela don't properly parent A.J.
Tony's solution to every one of A.J.'s fuck-ups is a dismissal rather than a genuine intervention. "Boys will be boys", "Military school", etc - not once do either Carmela or Tony manage to implement an effective punishment or disciplinary action on either Meadow or A.J.
A.J's not a sociopath, but he is a lazy, spoiled, useless asshole, because he was never punished for bad behaviour, never supported in his studies, and never rewarded for his good behaviour. Using world disasters as vehicles of his own self-pity is a fairly common symptom of depression, not sociopathy.
>>81542777
Oh, yeah, I forgot about A.J's gf. I think Blanca (was it Blanca?) and her son gave A.J purpose and meaning when he was drifting through life without any.
