I can get why he would. But the loophole doesn't really work since he continued his duties as commander to hang 3 leaders and one kid before quitting. Either your watch ends with your death or it doesn't. Can't have it both ways. Focusing on Ramsey instead of white walkers after Hardhome was also a questionable choice.
