How come they can't fight on holy ground? Why do aliens give a fuck about Earth Religions?
>>
I've never seen Highlander, is it actually good or is it memes?
>>
>>81494298
Just watch the first one everything else is trash
>>
>>81494261
It's unexplained. It's sci-fi. Use your imagination to invent a reason.

Perhaps the aliens know more about the universe than we do and things like "holy ground" in the minds of intelligent beings are more than mere concepts in the grand scheme of things.
>>
>>81494261
Highlander 2 doesn't exist. I don't know what the fuck you're talking about
>>
Highlander 2 is NOT CANON. Please stop this thread and delete all posts about aliens RIGHT NOW.

They actually explained this. All aliens on Ziest have immense respect for the religions of all planets.
>>
It's best to just ignore absolutely everything else in the Highlander franchise.

The first is the only to exist.
>>
>>81494261

They're not aliens, they're ancient extradimensional beings. Watch the Renegade Cut.

>>

The first movie is worth watching. Don't bother with anything else.
>>
>>81494298
The TV series was good, and expands the universe in good ways. The concept is so good that it would be wasted on a single movie.

I also liked Endgame. You get Duncan and Connor in one movie, and the story ties things together well.
>>
>>81494261

Bait aside, holy ground is a no-fight zone for the same reason there's "base" when you're playing tag, or guest right in Game of Thrones.

If you can't have a neutral zone where you can discuss shit without fear of getting murdered, it would just be a fucking free for all.
>>
>>81495132
what if you are an atheist? Then what?
>>
>>81494336
>It's unexplained. It's sci-fi. Use your imagination to invent a reason.
It isn't unexplained, they do get into it, it ties into leylines. I think the one with Mario van Peebles really got into it but it was explored in the show too.
>>
>>81495132
Isn't that was the story is about? A free for all?
>>
You probably don't experience The Quickening if you kill another immortal on holy ground.

Holy fuck, what a bunch of Highlander casuals in this thread.

They explained the holy ground thing in Highlander the Series. Joe tells Duncan that the only recorded instance of someone taking a head on holy ground was in a temple in Pompeii in AD 79.

So apparently taking a head on holy ground obliterates the fuck out of everything.
>>
Why the fuck did they get a person that couldn't speak English to be the main character as a Scotsman? And then they cast Connery as an Egyptian or something.
>>
The cartoon was fun, weird af but fun.
>>
>>81495543

This was answered in Highlander: the Raven.

There is still a quickening event with lightning and shit, but it's wasted if no immortals is in proximity.
>>
>>81495049
This, the series was goat, pretty fun to watch until the post France season
>>
>>81495549
I remember people being killed in the 4 movie in a cementery or something but I'm not sure
>>
>>81495367
Sorta? Think multidimensional beings with infinite reality-warping abilities, so I guess you could call them aliens.
>>81495543
All the energy just goes back to where it came from
>>
>>81495242
No. The Immortals are supposed to be warriors with honor, not mad men. That's why the Kurgan was so feared. They were all fucking around but he was actually trying to win.
>>
Highlander: The Source implies nothing happens, it's just a respect thing. Which really shits all over the scene in the first one where the Kurgan tells MacCleod he raped his woman and Connor doesn't rip his fucking head off. Although I wouldn't take much in terms of canon from Source
youtube.com/watch?v=DvS1BdiVC7o
>>
>>81495746

The Source is non-canon as fuck.

The Series says the only recorded instance of a head being taken on holy ground caused the destruction of Pompeii.

>>
>>81494558

There Can Only Be One.
>>
Alright, Highlander reboot idea
>first of all, scrap everything but the first movie from canon
>Conner Macleod, since he can now grow old and star a family, has done exactly that
>he is now on his deathbed
>his son is called to let him know his father won't last the night, so he gets in his car and rushes to the hospital
>along the way he gets in a car crash and dies
>but it's his first death, as he was set to be an immortal
>you see the whole allowing you to age part of the prize was a safeguard to protect from someone like the Kurgan getting it, as he would eventually relinquish it when he died
>this allows for a new fight for the prize
>through blind fate or luck, Conner does not die before his son
>this means since he is no longer the only one, he is immortal again
>though still old, he is now healthy again, and can essentially play the Ramirez role for his son

So, good starting idea, or complete dog shit?
>>
>>81495677
It was a Sanctuary for immortals who didn't want to fight anymore. In the third one Mario Van Peebers kills a holy man on holy ground and gets super powers.
>>
>>81494569
That's not much better. Best to ignore all versions of Highlander 2.
>>
>>81497788
too complicated. you need like half a film for exposition alone.

the whole thing just needs to be rebooted with new actors, otherwise it becomes a mess.
>>
>general Katana from planet Zeist

Late 80s and early 90s was such a weird time where a lot of crazy shit got into movies because everyone was trying to impress the MTV generation by doing outrageous gnarly shit.
>>
>>81498076
I think you could accomplish it by having some other immortal show up and say he had a "vision" when he died and needed to deliver a message to Conner. Then then he just gives an exposition dump about all of the stuffin his vision. Have it be a narration over the scene of him dieing in some interesting way so it's not boring and I think it'd be fine.
>>
Highlander is a weird franchise because they really only have one finite story to tell which each installment tries to get around and it just keeps getting more and more retarded.
>>
>>81498250

It's because the concept is so appealing.

The opening scene in H1 has it all.
Two intense modern-day dudes with swords duking it out in a parking lot because of some odd unexplained rules. The dudes are intense and there's no banter.

All you need is there.
>>
>>81494261
Highlander 2 is not Canon, at least the theatrical version.
>>
>>81498336

I've never really understood why they don't just try making prequel movies. Surely you could come up with some sort of bullshit storyline where the bad guy is trying to cheat the game somehow? Yet they keep going back to the idea that it has to be as much of a rehash of the first movie in one form or another.

Butler would make a better villain than a lead in the film and would play well off Fassbender being slightly more meek. Throw Tom Hiddleston in as another immortal and Idris Elba in the older than dirt mentor role, and you have a pretty good seller, but the budget for actors alone would be bloated.

Literally every follow-up cancelled that garbage out entirely.

In Highlander 3, Connor's and Van Peebles' swords broke while fighting in church. In Search for Vengeance, Colin got struck by lightning for drawing his sword in Stonehenge.

Not sure about the series. Always hated Adrian Paul.
>>
>>81503368
>Not sure about the series.

Also not canon. The original film ends with Connor obtaining the prize. The series continues as though the game is still going on and that the events of the original film didn't end with Connor and the Kurgan being the last two Immortals.

And I always enjoyed the series despite it's lack of canonicity to the film. Just like Stargate and Stargate: SG1.

Highlander II, while dumb as fuck and fucking up the continuity and lore, is a damn entertaining movie. The most memorable scenes in the franchise are in it.
>>
>>81500773
Nah that shit is so overdone in similar franchises. I think in Highlander the immortals are just random dudes duking it out through time and not every single important person ever.
>>
>>81503635
The only decent follow up was the anime, which did the smart thing and put it in a separate timeline.

I also heard the western animated series was alright, too, and took another smart approach. The main character of that was Connor's grandson, and the game started again the day Connor died of old age.
>>
>>81503635
3 was okay.

It's not great, nor does it help strengthen the franchise, but it was the most fun. Nobody took anything seriously in that movie. Mario Van Peebles hammed it up and the obligatory sex scene was fantastic.

12 year old me loved it. Had wear marks on the VHS and everything.

So what would happen if the Kurgan had killed McCloud anyway? Read somewhere that the Prize was whatever you wanted. Connor wanted to grow old and die with a woman he loved. Kurgan wanted the world.

Interesting, Search For Vengeance's Marcus Octavius was a lot smarter. He didn't give a shit about the prize, and instead ignored the Quickening, used his own immortality for personal gain, influence, and overall power, and ruled with an iron fist. Colin always showed up to dismantle it all, but that just gave Marcus the opportunity and thrill of building it back up again, along with giving him the chance to gloat over his old enemy.

why didn't some people just hole up in a monastery or something? no one could fuck with you, and some of them do martial arts and sheet so you could even practice sword fighting for if you ever wanted to leave.

further i'm sure after you stayed there for a few hundred years they would figure god bestowed some miracle on you for being so devout. you would be top dog. and could live forever. seems better then watching your back all the time getting into sword fights to the death no?

I mean i am sure i would get sick of it and leave sooner or later but i would prolly spend a few hundred years fucking around in some buddist temple learning to tie rocks to my nuts and all that.
>>
>>81513835
>why didn't some people just hole up in a monastery or something?

If you're regarding the original film, some probably did for a long while. But when the Quickening happened, all Immortals were drawn out, probably by some kind of insatiable compulsion, to where the Quickening was to take place.

If you're going by the TVshow, there were a lot of Immortals, including Connor, who did this to pretty much escape life and were rendered comatose. But they were all killed by an Immortal who didn't give a shit about the holy ground rule and was out on a revenge trip on Connor.

Nah man, I've thought about this since I was a kid.
Basically remake the first movie but with a little more exposition on being from the highlands and back story. Sean Conner's role is played by lambert instead. They spend a hundred years or whatever having adventures and prevent the kurgan from conquering lands by killing his armies or something. Connery now played by lambert would introduce other immortals like the illusion guy from the third one and others with unique powers. Then set up the new Highlander cinematic universe. Also we would use the same soundtrack all done by queen. Potentially a cgi Freddie mercury immortal seen in some flashback at a gathering of immortals.

Present day stuff would still be the eighties and could be a sequel or worked in like the original.

As far as the whole reason for the "Game", I'd like to see some more exposition on it if there ever is a new series/reboot/whatever.

>Towards the end of the series/movie
>Time of the Gathering
>Ramirez (or whomever fills the part of the main character's "teacher") reveals some revelations
>He has actually won before
>The Game is just a game
>Entertainment for higher beings, gods, aliens, whatever you want
>When you win you get a choice
>Join their ranks and setup new games to watch and other shit that cosmic beings do in their spare time
>Or, fight again. New planet, new immortals, new everything
>Retain your memories but lose any power gained from Quickenings
>Ramirez just likes the Game that much and doesnt mind if it's his time to lose
>Figures being one of the Gamemasters would be boring

As far as what the main character chooses, who knows?
The Prize could also be granted wishes by the higher beings, like wanting to continue living as a mortal, having kids, resurrecting a past wife, etc
I also figure that after any particular Game is finished, the planet is left alone; life continues for the normies. Used as sort of an ant farm for Gods to watch and/or muck around a bit in their spare time.

Aspen are immortal, as are many types of algae and archaeans. It'snot typical for something as complex as a human but it's not beyond possibility that a human might just "naturally" fail to age. Tho in the movies it's explicitly an occult effect, that doesn't force you to believe in any gods, just in the occult.
>>
>>81517890

You mean like how he dropped a hot rock down his mentor's throat as he slept before beheading him? The Kurgan gives no fucks, if some other immortal was fool enough to try to negotiate with him the Kurgan would play along and then murder the fool when he's off guard. The only reason someone like the Kurgan would avoid holy ground is if he knows or suspects Bad Things(tm) happen to those who fight there.
>>
>>81518276
>it's not beyond possibility that a human might just "naturally" fail to age

It's also not beyond possibility that every molecule in your body changes at precisely the same split-second and you end up not being you anymore but some kind of strange lion/negro hybrid.

Some very basic lifeforms showing a supposed (because we don't know for sure) immunity to senescence is the exception that proves the rule.
>>
>>81518612

Immortality is far, far, FAR more likely tho. In fact we may see clinical immortality within the next 50 years or so, if science can replicate it then it can't be beyond nature.
>>
>>81518647
>Immortality is far, far, FAR more likely tho

The chance of a human naturally failing to age is in the same likelihood range as a human spontaneously transforming into a lion/negro hybrid. That range being "it has never been recorded and likely never will be".
>>
>>81518710

>>
>>81519054

It's fine if you love another immortal, but even then all your family and friends will die before you. The only people who want to live forever are kids who've just gone thru their first existential crisis, and autists who have no interest in humans.
>>
>>81499672
