I think season 5 is one of the best. Yes it's rushed in that there's a long timegap and it skips over Rothstein's death but season 5 was about what the show was always building up to, that is the rise of Luciano's Commission and the fall of the old style gangsters like Nucky and Capone. It could have been fleshed out a lot more with another couple of seasons but I think they did an excellent job with the 8 episodes they were given.

I know I'm in the minority but 3>5>4>2>1

I didn't care for the show in the first two seasons and didn't like Jimmy's arc. Generally I think Winter is a great comedy and pulp writer, but very mediocre when it comes to psychological depth and character arcs. He's way too derivative, has too big a hard-on for gangster films. The Gyp season is when he realized his own limits and just embraced BE as a silly show with stylized set pieces and colorful characters and dialogues (like he did in Wolf of WS).

I find it interesting how the two shows that followed The Sopranos both only had half the DNA that made it great (Winter the silly violence and comedy, Weiner the character study and depth on Mad Men), without Chase involved. BE was really carried by its stellar cast and superb direction.

One of the best aspects of Gyp's writing is how well it foreshadows the ruthless of the Young Turks in America and how he is really only effective and feared because of his complete disdain for rules and the systems that govern the criminal underworld.

Nucky had no idea how to handle him and underestimated him time and time again, and it would come back again to bite him in the ass against Luciano and Meyer, who had no qualms about kidnapping his nephew.

Season 5 is the best and it feels like the whole programme has been leading up to it. For the first four seasons, it tries to spin the plates and lets us spend time with a large ensemble cast. They all get fleshed out and the only character not properly explored is Nucky, who's supposed to be the lead.

In season 5, we see Nucky in-depth for the first time. Constant flashbacks are juxtaposed with occurrences in the present, displaying how events from his past have directly caused events in his present. It also helps us to understand some of his actions during the other four seasons.
