The Studio System isn't the same as signing a contract with a studio. Today you're essentially a free agent that negotiates a contract per film with an agent and a whole team. Yes, there are certain stipulations, but for the most part you do what you want as long as you don't jeopardize the project.
In the old days your ass belonged to the studio. Your entire social life was dictated by the studio, down to who you could be seen with or even befriend. You made what they told you to make, when they told you to make it. Negotiations were handled on a more one on one level, which led to many performers being screwed over. It was fucking insane.
