The entire film is about the philosophical implications of the human form being heavily interspersed with technology and machinery. The Major plays a character that's so alienated from her physical form, it's hard to decide whether she's a human with an android body, or an android with a human brain. This only gets more difficult at the end, with the merging of consciousnesses and changing form to something almost metaphysical.

Having an East Asian social commentary would just cheapen and isolate the film's philosophy, when it's meant to be a global discussion.
