I've been a massive GitS fan for a long time now, I've enjoyed the first 3 movies (fucking LOVED Innocence), SAC and 2nd GIG. I've seen each of those movies and episodes AT LEAST twice, each. I have the soundtrack from all of them and enjoy listening to it regularly. I thought Arise was dissapointing, but still decent cinema. Better than most other anime/cartoons/live action out there.

I want to know- what is ScarJo's prosthetic level? The Major has been a full cyborg since a very young age, with her only "natural parts" being her brain and maybe part of spinal column, and even those are modified.

Scarjo doesn't look like a military-grade cyborg working in black-ops and spycraft, disconnected from humanity and terrifying to her enemies. She looks like an overpaid "CUTE!" whore who's coasted through life by her looks alone.

The anime movie version doesn't have a lot of rain because she has flaws. She pushes away some of her humanity, questioning emotions at times as if they're just programming leftover from her previous body. A program, but not real. The Major is also a stubborn bitch who wants to do the mission solo rather than risk bringing in the team. The reason why she tries to tell Batou to stay away despite Batou saving her in the end from complete annihilation. Most of her emotion shown is stubbornness and anger in the anime film.

While I agree that most anime characters are not being drawn as white, the 1995 Ghost in the Shell film and its sequel do not have a typical anime artstyle. In those movies, which this shitty flick seems to draw most heavily from visually, you can distinguish which characters are supposed to be Asian (see Aramaki, Togusa, creepy doll things in Innocence). While Motoko's race may be more ambiguous in other adaptations and the original anime, she's very clearly white in the 1995 film.

The plot and pacing in the new movie are bad, it was said before me many times. But the movie was also a failture from world design standpoint.
I really loved this mix of old and new technologies in the first anime, when the world itself still felt realistic, like it could've been our world if scientific progress went a little different in the past. The new movie completely sucks in this aspect - magic moving holograms which apeear ouf of nowhere, glowing beds, monochrome holographic 3d photos, and a whole bunch of little unpractical thigns designed to only look flashy, without thinking WHY they would look like this. Literally no thought was put into this, even old buildings look sterile and new.

The shitty forced dialog that asked for zero acting from anybody involved. The uninspired lazy fight scenes. The outdated special effects. That's part of the problem. GitS was not PG13, not only in terms of visuals, but in it's plot. As for it being recognizable, people generally know it as "the movie that inspired the Matrix" and are therefore sort of interested.

It was like they watched the 1995 movie on mute, then used a rejected Robocop remake treatment and tacked the coolest scenes onto it, and then got the shittiest cinematographer and the director of Snow White and the Huntsman to very shittily recreate them.
