When Marvel first started it, it was a novel idea, and before avengers the movies were mostly self contained with an after credit scene of sam jackson sayin "Ayy yo son, U a venger nao."
But the novelty wore off fast as fuck.

Used to be that if a movie performed well they would try to build a franchise around it afterwards. Now they make the movie with the ready made assumption it is going to be a franchise, so they make these shitty weaksauce introduction movies that don't want to set the bar too high. They end up being shit movies with no conclusion because the threat in the movie can't get killed off because they want them to ride out through the sequels.
Its just annoying now.
But all the studios want the guaranteed income of a cinematic universe so they don't have to worry about taking risks on intetesting movies.

You know what I would do?

I would do a Blackadder style progression.

>Next do a Middle East Crisis film (where we are now, there are Spec Ops units fighting in the ME).
>Then do a 'Near Future' hypothetical war, such as Russian invasion of Eastern Europe, or North Korean invasion of South Korea with Chinese support.

Intersect these with a

>Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan film. Introduce a Russian character and or Middle Eastern character. Can be good or bad in the Gulf War (Kuwaiti for example for good, or Iraqi for bad) if Middle Easterner, or can be introduced in War on Terror.
>Falklands War film. Introduce a young SAS soldier for the British angle later on.
>Kosovo War film. Introduce either a Russian or Eastern European character. Can be good or bad. Can be the antag or protag depending on what view the film takes place. Can also include the old USSR guy who is either a mentor or whatever with the new protag.

You can add generational stuff for Chinese in Korean --> Vietnam ---> Hypothetical 'near future' wars.

Americans and Brits are the main returning protags in CoD, they make sense, but you can always include other other nations in for multinational forces.
