Is it even possible for a human to memorize the bible? All 930,243 words and in the correct order without error?
>>
>>81311606
Well most of those words are just the same words over in a different order, so I'd say it's possible.

of course it is, as long as it's part of God's plan

Memorizing parts like Genesis chapter 5 and Matthew 1:1. Just send me to Gehenna, already.

1 This is the genealogy[a] of Jesus the Messiah[b] the son of David, the son of Abraham:

2 Abraham was the father of Isaac,
Isaac the father of Jacob,
Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers,
3 Judah the father of Perez and Zerah, whose mother was Tamar,
Perez the father of Hezron,
Hezron the father of Ram,
4 Ram the father of Amminadab,
Amminadab the father of Nahshon,
Nahshon the father of Salmon,
5 Salmon the father of Boaz, whose mother was Rahab,
Boaz the father of Obed, whose mother was Ruth,
Obed the father of Jesse,
6 and Jesse the father of King David.
David was the father of Solomon, whose mother had been Uriah’s wife,
7 Solomon the father of Rehoboam,
Rehoboam the father of Abijah,
Abijah the father of Asa,
8 Asa the father of Jehoshaphat,
Jehoshaphat the father of Jehoram,
Jehoram the father of Uzziah,
9 Uzziah the father of Jotham,
Jotham the father of Ahaz,
Ahaz the father of Hezekiah,
10 Hezekiah the father of Manasseh,
Manasseh the father of Amon,
Amon the father of Josiah,
11 and Josiah the father of Jeconiah[c] and his brothers at the time of the exile to Babylon.
12 After the exile to Babylon:
Jeconiah was the father of Shealtiel,
Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel,
13 Zerubbabel the father of Abihud,
Abihud the father of Eliakim,
Eliakim the father of Azor,
14 Azor the father of Zadok,
Zadok the father of Akim,
Akim the father of Elihud,
15 Elihud the father of Eleazar,
Eleazar the father of Matthan,
Matthan the father of Jacob,
16 and Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary, and Mary was the mother of Jesus who is called the Messiah.
17 Thus there were fourteen generations in all from Abraham to David, fourteen from David to the exile to Babylon, and fourteen from the exile to the Messiah.

I used to work with autistic kids and some of them could recite their special interest readings (fave books, articles about something they like) word for word. Not sure if they could do the entire book because usually we had to redirect them to a different topic since they would get crazy fucking excited and stuck on it, so I'd say it's possible. Might just take years, and maybe you'd need to be autistic but I don't know.

Before the printing press and shit people had very few books. They basically had the bible and shakespeare and maybe some greek philosophy. That's all you really need in the western world if you want to appear smart. Also I think a lot of it had to do with discussion. If you watch a movie and discuss it on /tv/, you're more likely to remember certain lines or scenes because they get discussed. If you were part of a christian community and discussed parts of the bible every day you would quickly remember parts of it easily.

People used to remember massive amounts of information all the time before widespread literacy, it was the only way to preserve their culture.
Besides, many ancient texts have a lot of repetitions and formulaic phrases that were specifically put in to aid memorization.

>>
>>81314655
Of course at the oral tradition stage it was much shorter and much more subject to change just from unintentional drift.

For most of the history though, it was written down. Judaism in its modern monotheistic form didn't really ever exist without written book, and elements of the pre-monotheistic reforms lingered in general public awareness until fairly late.

The oral period in Christianity was relatively short only 100 years before books of the sayings of Jesus (Q, the Gospel of Thomas), and the earliest narratives (Mark) were in circulation. The only really early documents were the letters of Paul and the versions we have today have been altered, or written in their entirety by later authors trying to sanitize him for the later orthodox audience.

There were cultures with traditions of bards who could perform long epic poems, but the bible doesn't seem to have been one of them.

Its definitely my favorite record of a psychedelic experience about a conspiracy theory.

At the time it was a popular conspiracy theory that Nero had not in fact died, and instead fled and was building an army and would return.
Of course the more time it took the more magical and terrible it was imagined to be.
Its a bit like the Hitler survived meme in modern pop culture where the initial stories weren't that fanciful but by the 80s it had turned into Hitler's head controlling robot bodies.

if their really was massive conspiracies about nero returning at the head of a zombie horde of legionaries or something, that makes me happy
>>
>>81315784
I just mentioned it, but its the Emperor Nero.
Explained it a bit in >>81315804

Its a pretty thinly veiled polemic. The two numbers supplied 666 and the less common 616 break down as representing the value of either NERON CAESAR or NERO CAESAR
>>
>>81311606
No.
>>
>>81316079
I've never heard this theory but I like it the 'deadly wound' could refer to Nero, is their any documentation from the time besides John to back this up? that would be fascinating shit
>>
>>81316052
The bible actually includes a zombie horde as part of the resurrection account. Christians generally ignore it because they think its silly (right up there with the talking ass), because it cheapens the return of Jesus since it happens before his resurrection (making him just one of a multitude), and because its representation of a imminent apocalypse is an embarrassment for a religion that still frequently cycles through apocalyptic movements.

>>81316348
the bible at least kjv, is very poetic it kinda rhymes or at least has a rhythm you memorize through repetition you repeat entire chapters over and over until its just their, then you move onto the next chapter, being very young helps of course the mind can absorb more information easier, but it can be done, a true autist could easily memorize the entire bible if they started young enough
>>
>>81316162
Yeah, there's a ton of stuff written about this. Its actually well known enough that its mentioned on the Wikipedia article about Nero.

There are other non-Christian sources for the conspiracy theory so it wasn't just restricted to them, then as now new religious movements tend to latch on to conspiracies or other fringe beliefs.

Most of the scholarly books on these topics tend to be pretty expensive.
I think the first time I had it explained to me in depth was listening to the excellent Bible Geek podcast done by Robert M Price and its still a good listen as a cheap way to get a ton of information and better ideas for reading material.
>>
>>81316490
The Bible was basically compiled from oral tradition. It's not like everyone was literate back then with access to pen and paper. You had to give things a certain rhythm, though obviously that wouldn't translate.
>>
>>81316619
yea I just looked up revelations and nero, tons of stuff thanks reading material for days
>>
>>81316079
Seems legit anon, thanks for the info.

>Writing in the early fifth century AD, Sulpicius Severus recounts the reign of Nero, "the basest of all men, and even of wild beasts...who will yet appear immediately before the coming of Antichrist" (Sacred History, II.28-29). Too, given that his body never was found, there are doubts whether he committed suicide; "even if he did put an end to himself with a sword, his wound was cured and his life preserved," as foretold in Revelation, "to be sent forth again near the end of the world, in order that he may practice the mystery of iniquity" (II.29).

>Nero, too, was the sixth emperor, counting from Julius Caesar (as did Suetonius, for example, and Josephus, cf. Antiquities of the Jews, XVIII.2.2, where Tiberius is identified as the third). "And there are seven kings: five are fallen, and one is, and the other is not yet come" (Revelation 17:10). The sixth (and last) of the Julio-Claudian emperors, it is Nero who "is" but who has been "wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed" (13:3)—Nero redivivus.

http://penelope.uchicago.edu/~grout/encyclopaedia_romana/gladiators/nero.html
>>
>>81316371
Might be a bit too similar to 300 since the army he was supposed to be leading was the Persians (that's what the number of heads is about).

I think I'd rather see movies based on stuff that got pulled out / obscured in the bible. Like Yahweh fighting the salt water chaos dragon Leviathan, dying, being revived by his wife asherah on the third day, and then making the dry land from its corpse.
Of course it will never happen for the same reason it got removed from the modern bible, religious people don't really like the fun hardcore stuff in their stories, especially when they're curiously similar to other nearby cultures who were demonized.
At least we got a pretty awesome version of it at the start of the game Xenoblade Chronicles.
>>
>>81316665
Oral tradition definitely forms the lowest stratum, but the Bible we have now is more of a 'readers digest' condensed version.
Especially early on they had an ever growing amount of religious text that had to be fit into scrolls that needed to be kept short for practical reasons.
They couldn't just throw text away because it was too important though, with rival factions that had their own favorite versions due to details like the hero god, or the way the gods were depicted (the earliest parts of the written bible pre-date the monotheistic reform and were rather poorly edited to remove the polytheism).

So they'd condense things taking this version of a story from one text, that version of another story from a second text, or interweaving the two stories. Look up the documentary hypothesis / J source, D source, E source, P source, for more details. Its particularly obvious in the Flood myth where you have several versions on top of one another with conflicting details.

It would be a pale imitation of the creation through combat myth though.

Besides Evangelion already did it with giant robots.

Well, look at it this way, if the biblical figures did exist, wouldn't you expect some of them to be like this, especially the elites?

One of the more compelling parts of the New Testament in particular is how petty, fretful, and humanly weak the apostles are. It actually helps them seem like realistic people.

>that part where one of Moses' sons gets cursed forever because he just happened to see Moses when he was drunk and naked and wandering around like a lunatic
>>
>>81319262
Its kind of an odd byproduct of the fact there were early groups that didn't like the apostles very much. Mark in particular seems to have drawn heavily from Paulinist possibly more specifically Marcionite sources and as a result in it they're basically depicted as a bunch of idiots for Jesus to mouth off to.

The later books attempt to rehabilitate them, but there was a push and pull over a period of time where a group would build up a character like Peter because he was the representative of their group, then another rival group would tear him down a bit.

Hey its time for another fun Bible fact:
Have you ever wondered about all the weird foot fetishism in the Bible? How women are always sleeping by mens feet, or gripping their feet while making an oath, or washing a mans feet?
The bible, especially the old testament uses 'feet' as a euphemism for dicks and balls
>>
The Muslims have people who memorize the entire Quran. Its considered their highest scholastic achievement and perfectly encapsulates why they haven't accomplished anything in terms of science in a millennium.
>>
>>81313289
Sorry sweetie, but the authors were inspired by the Holy Spirit. God had a direct influence over what was put in.
>>
>>81319509
Its actually Noah.

That bit is actually a callback to earlier flood myths like the Gilgamesh epic. it was stated in those stories that the flood survivor was the first man to grow grapes and make wine.
So today it reads a bit odd when he curses one of his sons, but at the time they probably would have given him some slack since it was implied he was blitzed out of his mind because he didn't know that he'd get drunk.
>>
>>81319509

It's implied he raped his father.
>>
>>81319509
some have speculated that, along with the other really obtuse euphemisms in the bible, "saw" meant, well, doin' stuff
>>
>>81319509
it's actually one of Noah's sons, Ham

the best part is that for a long ass time it was considered the origin story of black people

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curse_of_Ham#European.2FAmerican_slavery.2C_seventeenth_and_eighteenth_centuries
>>
>>81319675
That's a bit of an extreme reading, but probably not outside the realm of what groups may have thought historically.
I wonder if we have that part of the Gilgamesh epic and if there's a similar story about one of the sons of Utnapishtim.
The invention of wine and subsequent drunkenness after the flood is definitely an original element.
>>
>>81312663

Plus, it's extremely simplistic language. Very small total vocabulary.
