Isn't it weird that there aren't a lot of horror movies focusing on the deep/unknown depths of the ocean.I'm not talking about movies like "Jaws".I'm talking big, mythical, terrifying fuckers.

I'm finding it hard to come up with any kind of plot that hasn't been done before like The Abyss.

You're dealing with really boring scenery since the deep ocean is literally dark. A really predictable villain like a deep sea monster.
What would be the plot device that even puts a group of people there to begin with? Submarine? Sea lab? Not exactly fresh. It's be hard to do a movie like that correctly.
>>
>>81307028
I'd cream
>>
>>81306137
That movie really bothered me. Are they magical or not? Them turning into stone is a completely natural phenomena explained with science but somehow they can still smell the blood of a christian? Make up your mind.
>>

>>
>>81305825

>>
The number of potential stories are very limited because humans rarely go deep into the ocean. Every story would be limited to following a submarine or a group of explorers and that would get old fast. The type of creatures that can live in such a high pressure environments like the bottom of the ocean would die if they came close to the surface so the potential for any monster and human interaction would be small.
>>
>>81305770
Would probably be pretty boring to watch seeing as your giant creature would likely live in the dark depths where fuck all light can penetrate.

yeah man just like the amount of space stories is very limited

oh wait that's wrong lol
>>
>>81307956

When creating a story, there are more reasons to go to space then there are to go deep underwater. We can go to space for exploration, colonization, saving the earth from a dying sun, invasion from aliens, and so on. The possibilities for a story in space are endless. When it comes to going to the bottom of the ocean what do we have, exploration?

>>81310642
In the Heart of the Sea had potential (and was actually not too bad) but as you say, got slammed critically.

I think it is one of those things that the novel is just so good that it doesn't really bear the adaptation. And I'm generally of the opinion that cinematic adaptations of literary works are shit: the best cinema is its own art form and doesn't rely on being connected with other art-forms to gain legitimacy. Until one of the great directors/auteurs turns their hands to the question of aquatic cinema, we'll be left with sub-par stuff

Italian prog (or rock progessivo italiano/RPI) is hugely popular. The three biggest bands were Banco del Mutuo Soccorso, Le Orme, and Premiata Forneria Marconi. There were also a ton of one hit wonders in the 70s. And Italy has been (one of) the best producer of prog in the past 20 years now.

We know absolutely jack shit about the ocean.

Some whales live to be 200+ years old, certain artic sharks are likely as old as 400+ years, and they found clams even older than that. There was an octopus deep in the ocean found to be watching her eggs for nearly 4.5 years before they hatched. Evolution moves slow in the deep ocean, and there is some old, weird, ancient shit down there.

>why would anything down there be intelligent? what purpose would it serve?
This is probably the dumbest fucking thing I have ever read, anon. The ocean is not an isolated enviornment. Who told you this? It has changed over time. Evolution doesn't just stop, you don't stop evolving and there isn't a single shred of proof that says organisms just halt evolution entirely. You are talking about a largely unexplored, vast and varied multi-ecosystem of hundreds of thousands of miles, filled with prehistoric life that we KNOW for a fact continues to exist. You ask a very dumb question on intelligence, as if intelligence is unique to like, a handful of animals. We know this isn't even remotely true of most land mammals...what makes you think that there aren't equally intelligent deep sea organisms that exist? Whales are smart, Dolphins are already the second or third smartest aquatic organism on the planet.

You are being naive and asking silly questions. Please research evolution.

>>

Whales and dolphins interact with the surface, and are mammals. Deep oceanics never even see light. They don't need intellect to survive or thrive, what they have is cunning instead.

It's at the end of a "cavern" and beginning of a "cave". In scuba terms, that means it's the last spot where you can see the opening of the cave and can find your way out visually.
If you go past that point without a line leading back to the opening you can stir up a lot of silt or just get lost in the dark and not find your way out.

The fuck does any of this mean? There are literally dozens of intelligent animals that aren't active in sunlight. Dolphins are still acquatic mammals...they aren't land based. You have no basis to look to to draw such a naive conclusion that there exists NO intelligent deep sea organism. You virtually have no basis to say there aren't.
>there is no light down there, so they wouldn't evolve
This is quite literally not true or not how evolution works

Actually environents at the bottom of the ocean are all remarkably similar except for slight changes in topography. We don't know everything, but it's very unlikely that anything intelligent could survive down there, due to the extreme pressure.

>Actually environents at the bottom of the ocean are all remarkably similar
How would you possibly know that if 95 percent of all oceans have been unexplored?
>intelligent life would be difficult there
So that is the only argument here? That it is difficult so intelligent life isn't probable? If some of these lifeforms have no natural predators and go exist for millions of years, it just seems intellectually dishonest to outright assume they could not develop intelligences...because it is "hard". Squids already display a complex intellect. We already have a basis to work with and we all know how evolution works.

We live in a world where Tardigrades exist. So "it is hard" seems like a copout.

there was a thread, maybe this is even copypasta, on /v/ years ago about an idea for a game. Basically the game could either be in an underwater facility or spaceship, and every event would be completely randomized. It would be multiplayer and *some* scenario would occur, it could be anything, terrorist, alien attack, deep sea attack, etc. Everyone would have randomly chosen roles, like the terrorist would be assigned their role at the beginning and know one would know. Owing to the randomized sequences of events there wouldn't necessarily be a way to win or even survive

It's actually not. You fix it with a clamp that goes around the pipeline. Also, 0.445 * depth = ambient pressure [psi] so ~2,700 psi. I highly doubt their dP wasn't 2700 psi. Probably only a couple hundred, but it will still do that at a couple hundred psi differential.

Speaking of leaks. This is a little hard to make out but it's pretty trippy once you realize what's going on.

This is the guide funnel on the underside of a subsea tree (sits on top of the wellhead). There is a deposit of highly compressed gas trapped in the funnel (you can see the surface rippling on the top right) that's forming this insanely clear mirror. This crap is either trying to figure out what the gas pocket is or is looking at it's reflection for the first time.

It's expensive and difficult to do underwater filming. Which is a shame, because open ocean is a fairly common fear and the fact that 90% of the ocean is unexplored means there is tons of potential for horror.

It doesn't even have to be big-budget, either. There was a low budget movie about a couple left behind in open water off the coast of Australia on a diving trip and it was great, really scary (sequel was shit though).

you must have a pretty closed view on the world if you think everyone on here is a stay at home neet. marine biology is one of the easier scientific fields to get into (hopefully not to offensive to the other guy)

Oh.
It reminds me of the ending of a movie.
The Borderlands.

But I've said enough. Huhuhu.

While evolution is simply a process and doesn't have an end goal, the ultimate product of it would be:

Creatures impervious enough to shrug off a changing environment.

Creatures adaptable enough to acclimate to a changing environment.

Creatures intelligent enough to simply change their environment.

Also, many species of octopus are highly intelligent.

How come no movie has made me creeped out as Spielberg's War of the Worlds did with the first Tripod reveal scene? I wish we could have something like that with giant monsters

DUDE no one knows what is in every corner of the ocean. There could be a giant spoopy monster swimming around in the bottomless pit that is hidden by rocks and sand for all we know

>>

Agreed.

It's why a live action Evangelion film series could be LOTR or Star Wars-good if given to someone with the right combination of that sense of atmosphere and that pull with the studios that you'd need to do it right.

Body horror angels treated like the tripods in War Of The World's would be amazing to see. It would be better still, if they treated the EVA's the same way and really pushed how freakishly alien and alive they were as well.
