Just finished watching season 1 for the first time
Does it get better/change much?
It feels more like a nuclear family drama than a mafia show. The mafia stuff is so hackney, feels like it's mocking the genre. There are wildly cringe-worthy cheese moments all over, but it didn't seem to be a wink and a nod style cheese, more, I'm fucking out of touch with the world, audience, and my camera kind of cheese.
It also hasn't really aged well, which I forgive, it's almost 20 years old; but it's FAR more noticeable than I anticipated.
Also, can Little Anthony, Meadow, and their storylines just go away?
Double also, wtf is up with Carm and the Priest? Who thought that would be a compelling addition?
Going to keep watching, but I'm shocked at how amateur the show is at this stage.
OP cont'd
The characters have a lot of potential, I see why people latched on to them. But, some are so over the top, Paulie and Silvio in particular. I'm thinking of the "buttfucks"/Starbucks episode.
MUH ESPRESSO CULTURE, IT'S BEING APPROPRIATED
Le Starbucks is everywhere and has complex names for coffee jokes
God damn I want to like you show, but you're being so difficult
>>81303234
>Does it get better/change much?
yes
>>81303234
>It feels more like a nuclear family drama than a mafia show.
well, yeah. mafia shows/films had been done to death in 1999. the only place left to go was into the home and psyche.
If you don't like the premise of Tony going to whack someone while visiting colleges with Meadow, then the show is not for you. It does ease up on the nuclear family drama when they start getting older, but still it's great
>>81303557
also, yeah. the post-9/11 show is basically unrecognizable from the first three seasons, although both halves are great.
It's like a time capsule

I actually did enjoy that, but I don't think it was a well executed arc
>>81303234
Finish season 2
>>81303766
it wasn't an "arc", it was an episode. it's totally a film noir, and basically a slasher movie from the perspective of the monster. the whole Tony walking across the headlight beam of a car in the rain thing, everything. it's great.
>>81303234
why does nascarella look so fucking weird in that picture
>>81303234
>I don't like The Sopranos
>>81303234
It does get better, as in the conversations become better. Season 1 felt like they almost were trying to make a movie, all the dialogue was perfect and snappy constantly, the unbelievable way people talk in stuff like The Godfather. It was good, but the change to season 2 fixed it and it stayed
I made it to season 4 before I dropped it, just like Mad Men. It does have some good scenes and a lot of fun acting but it's nothing remarkable.
>>81303234
I just finished season 4 last week.
It's a family drama show with the Italian mafia sprinkled in to make it seem unique.
Even the mafia elements of the show are a metaphor for Tony's life as a working father doing what he has to do in order to provide for his family. It becomes obvious when he talks about it to his therapist.
>I had to let a close associate of mine go today etc. etc.
>>81303234
>Double also, wtf is up with Carm and the Priest? Who thought that would be a compelling addition?
I thought it was pointless. I feel like all it did was reveal that the priest likes to flirt with the women who attend church and eat their food, which was kind of irrelevant.
Now my question: Why does Tony end up beating his lawyer for dating his russian whore that he dumped back in season 2 when he said he was okay with it earlier that episode?
You know Quasimodo predicted all this
>>81304310
Pleb but at least you tried.
>>81304865
Based Quasimodo poster and the episode when Bobby's father whacks Mustang Sally thendies is kino.
>>81303234
>It feels more like a nuclear family drama than a mafia show.
What to say.
>"Battlestar Galactica has a deus ex machina ending. REEEEEE"
Six series of robots droning on endlessly about god didn't prepare you for that?
>>81304645
Because he was obviously lying about him being ok with it.
>>81305194
So it IS a family drama and not a mafia show?
>>81304129
>Fat
>Whiny
>Communistic thinking
>SJW
>Dates a mulignan to get ""revenge"" on father
Not /our girl/
>>81303766
Okay are you just trying to sound smart now? It wasn't even a fucking arc, it was one goddamn episode
>>81306634
The thesis of the entire show is that there isn't much of a difference.
>>81306634
Its both you shit. You'll get your mafia wars and shootouts and whackings and rats being offed. But the central drive of the show is Tony's psyche and his relationships, both in the mafia and at home.
Finn DeTrolio. My arch-nemesis.
>>81303766
Yeah, what the fuck are you talking about it? Do you even know what an arc is?
>>81306634
It's a soap opera about a Mafia family.
I can't even believe I'm saying this, but I think it's literally 2deep4u. Go watch Peaky Blinders or Boardwalk Empire instead.
>>81307607
don't start that aww shucks shit with me
YOU'RE. GOING.
>>81304129
THICC!
>>81306740
I still want to have sex with her in the missionary position for the sole purpose of procreation though.
>>81307607
I still have incredible feels for poor Finn through the entire series.
>meet qt3.14 IAP
>she gets you a cool summer job tho both of you are rich
>end up witnessing horrid violence
>guido fat fuck wants to fuck and kill you
>end up having to rat out fat fuck to other gangsters, who end up killing him
>IAP blames you for not understanding the 'culture'
>>81304645
Carmela's arc is struggling to come to terms with the fact that she married a man who makes his living through death and suffering and that she is going to go to hell. She's too in love with the comfort and luxury that Tony can provide, she wants to be better, but basically became a wife and mother straight out of high school, and now can't stand on her own two feet AND enjoy the kind of lifestyle Tony's work gives her.
Flirting with the Priest is, apart from being about feeling valued and appreciated on an emotional, intellectual level, is basically one of Carm's hobbies - she has nothing constructive to do with her time past making her family dinner. All that boredom has left her riven with self-doubt and a gnawing sense of guilt.
You really are unconscionably stupid.
I feel like I've been watching this show over several years and somehow I've only just reached the end of season 2
Was it just me or was the episode whereChrissy got shotfucking awful? Is this a known thing because the writing seemed to dip massively for that one episode and come straight back up after, if you watch through the middle of the season it sticks out like a sore thumb
>>81308125
>that dancing scene from the Season 6 premiere
Webm anyone?
>>81307951
>>81307068
Episodes can contain arcs, guys
>>81303716
>N64 - lol'd at Tony's controller skills
This
Season 4-6 are god tier imo. Season 5 probably being the best. It's the most gangster of them all with all the warring between families also Johnny Sac being a stone cold gangster before he gets sick was awesome.
>>81304195
I really like fedoras, is there any way to wear them without looking pretentious?
You know that fat cock sucker says I look like the Shah of Iran?

>Why does Tony end up beating his lawyer for dating his russian whore that he dumped back in season 2 when he said he was okay with it earlier that episode?
For one that's not his lawyer..two he clearly wasn't ok with it.
>>81309622
>he doesn't understand the Mafia-guy is a sociopath with rage issues
>>81305011
Bobby Sr. was a fucking badass.
>>81309695
>the tony is a sociopath meme
He's not a sociopath, that's literally one of the main points of the show. Vito is more of a sociopath than Tony is.
>>81309856
watch your back Anakin!
>>81304865
Kek everytime
>>81309135
After reading this I will stop. It was emulation, not imitation. I really enjoy and admire your Quasimodoposting and I leave it to you.
>>81309938
the first season has a kind of cheap 90s feel to it, it's hard to put into words, maybe it's the lighting.
that mostly goes away by the second season.
>>81309996
That's how I feel about Twin Peaks
>>81309978
dem johnnycakes tho
>>81309135
>>81309960
>mfw I also Quasimodopost and have no intention of stopping
>>81309960
please anon continue
i cant lurk all day
>>81303234
personally i think season 1 is the weakest by far but maybe thats just because i hadnt warmed to the characters yet
>>81310162
it is the weakest. the show didn't really find its stride until the second season.
>>81303234
Yeah it didn't really do much for me either. Apart from Tony, Silvio, Paulie and the psychiatrist none of the characters interested me in the slightest. Most were annoying but the mother, sister and old uncle something were so incredibly shit I could not keep watching.
Not enough young people I guess.
I liked S1
>>81310698
Legend of Tennessee Moltisanti and Isabella are both Top 10 Sopranos episodes. I like Season 1, everything is so cutesy and innocent back then. Their family is relatively stable, Chrissy isn't a fucking mess yet, Tony isn't totally fucked in the head yet. It's nice.
OP back again
The biggest effect of Season 1 is that I've been craving pasta and garlic bread all day, going to make a batch and settle in for season 2 and some wine this evening.
Bless you all
>>81311102
YES. THIS. GODDAMMIT. When I was watching Sopranos I made ziti or lasagna every freaking day.
>>81308448
Isn't really much of an arc except for the growing relationship between Meadow and Tony, which has virtually nothing to do with the actual hit during a school trip.
