Actually, GRRM is one of the most detail oriented writers out there. It's undeniable. He has woven real world myths/religion and history into his own world that has been built. Literary references all over the place, foreshadowing, things written a decade previous tie in to future books and events. Yeah he's pretty good actually. The only legitimate criticism about martin's work is that it has become bloated and meandering, and the pacing has slowed down considerably. He is a master at character building, and destruction of those characters, but not so much (as of yet..) at actually picking up the pieces after that.
