This season, like this arc in the comics, served as a setup. It was meant to show who Negan is and how he rules, and why the group decides to finally fight back. But to be fair, they could've easily crammed the 16 episodes into 8 and have this be the mid season finale.

I think that's the big problem with the show, they drag everything out too much. Like, we had to wait 5 episodes to see Maggie's reaction to Glenn dying, one of the most important parts of this arc that changes her character completely.

That'd actually be good

Problem is they're following the comic events broadly, and have actually improved on it in certain areas, but it's hard to appreciate when it's just masses and masses of filler every episode.

They're running into the problem you get in anime a LOT (and GoT as well), where they're at risk of the show plot catching up to the source material, meaning they'd need to wait a year or two for enough to be written that they could carry on, which would mean no $$$ for AMC.

As a result, they're stuffing each episode with more and more 'character development' in order to slow down the pace. And it's only gonna get worse.

In my opinion (if they're smart) the show will just have an alternate ending. They will ending after the Negan storyline, leave it with an "open" ending and stop there. Then they can continue to milk the TWD cow with spin offs, prequels, sequels without worrying too much about hardcore fans getting pissed. There's no way they can continue following the comics without catching up, unless they actually slow down to a ridiculously slow pace.

Also, rates are dropping for the show, Kirkman said he will not tell the ending to the showrunners and that he plans to continue until issue 300 at least. So all is pointing towards a different and premature ending, at least imo

I've always thought Walking Dead was better suited for a trilogy of theatrical movies, with World War Z anthology being the long running tv series.

Like the finale of Season 7 where they could have done good storytelling to bring people back in (show Abe get knocked for example, then cold open Season 8 with Glenn getting killed from Daryl's mistake), but instead they go for the bullshit money grab that created a higher peak but a bigger ratings crater.

Not only that, but instead of doing 8 or 9 episodes of likable bullshit, they do 16 episodes with 75% filler in each episode with the good stuff intermittent in each of those episodes.

Just read the comics. You can find them online. I remember watching the season 6 finale and wanted to see how everything played out so I decided to read on. They fucking butchered everything about this season. They also kinda screwed themselves because they fucked up Andrea's character so hard on the TV show, and this season is based on a part of the comic that has a lot of development for Andreas and Ricks relationship with each other. The walking dead feels kinda empty without Andrea and Rick leading the charge together, but whatever.

There's the whole stupid thing with making Carol, one of the most badass killers into a moral fag. Why? What's the point? We know that by the end of it she's going to go around in a circle and come back to help the crew.

They fucked up the whole Jesus following Dwight thing, they decided they kinda wanted the imagery with the walker falling off the highway but didn't want it to be anything important.

Trash people are retarded and so are ocean side retards. (I also feel like the garbage people will ruin a reveal later on with the introduction of another group)

They couldn't top the the season premiere in the feeling of hopelessness. Every other scene, felt like Rick COULD do something to Negan, but he just doesn't.

Not a strike against Jefferey Dean Morgan, but i felt like the writers kinda wrote him a little off. Like they interrupted him a little weird. They keep saying that Negan is this super charming dude, so they write him cracking jokes left and right, but in the Comics it's more of a unpredictability, unnerving thing instead of a charming thing. This giant dude with this freaky smile, who at any moment will just bash your skull in. He also swears non-stop in the comics which gives him this sense that he has no self control.

And then the finale sucked. The fight had no emotional weight behind it. No one of importance really got hurt, or died. And i didn't feel like anyone would. I couldn't have cared less.

Not exactly a reveal of anything grand just the reveal of him being dead.

It was just the sudden shock seeing him being dead. You turn the page and Bam. You see his decapitated head, there. The way the comic did it was really well executed. You really don't expect them to get fucking destroyed, because of one person. But they do. and it's no big thing, they don't show them dying. They just stumble upon their decapitated heads and that's when you realize that these people are next level. While Negan will make a show out of killing someone to demonstrate his dominance and to clearly display rules. The Whisperers literally just went to their home, killed a bunch of people and didn't say shit about it and let them figure out what happened and why it happened for themselves. The literal definition of, not knowing what hit you.

Does anyone else hate the way the shows filmed? From things to like the time of day always being the sunniest, hottest looking day, to them never doing creative camera work. This show has no style. No flare. It's based on a comic but it doesn't use any of the staples from the comics.

The comics heavily use darkness, and Silhouettes. yet the show barley uses any of this. Even to the way peoples faces are blacked out in the comics. There is some great imagery in the comic, and the show doesn't even come close.

I wish they would put some style in the way this is filmed.

TWD has no story. The show is about something weird that happened (zombie apocalypse) that changed the way society works. Now it's the day to day on that reality. How it happened or why it happened doesn't matter, there is no story. You could literally use this same formula for anything else, replace "zombie apocalypse" with "alien invasion" or meteor impact" or "worldwide plague" and then you will see just how shallow TWD is. There is no story.

With that said I still enjoy it, it's still fine entertainment albeit dumb.

I'm not saying good stories couldn't be written within that setting but Kirkman can't do it and AMC's stable of writers sure as shit can't, thus 90% of each season is spouting off badly written dialog about their feelings.

It's a shame that World War Z wasn't picked-up as the tv series, as an anthology with 2-3 episode arcs interspersed with stand-alone episodes, with all kinda characters in all kinda settings all over the world, would allow for far more freedom to tell a story.

Trapping the writers with Rick and company only results in the trash we've been getting from both Kirkman and AMC.

Its a concept that could be dumb but works at least for the comic, and is really refreshing. It's also creepy since the zombies in the comic are still a threat unlike the show. Especially since Rick is the most handicapped man in the world.

The reveal is really cool since, there's these 2 dudes trying to escape some zombies and one of them is wounded. While hiding one of them hears whispering and the other guy things he's tripping balls or something. Its unnerving since both the characters and the audience don't know what's really going on.

Really worried how the show will handle it cause it's my it's one of my favorite arcs.

I wonder how differently this series would've turned out had they kept the original showrunner of the first/second seasons. I know people had issues with the slower pace, farm drama and whatnot, but maybe some things about it of that cause it to be made fun of on here wouldn't have been done and nobody would be making fun of it here all of the time.

Well, people will always find flaws in anything, but maybe it wouldn't be so widespread. The threads about it are fun enough, but I just wonder if it could've been avoided at all with different people at the top is all.

I guess that's why I remember so much from the first season and can't remember anything from 3 to now. 1 and 2 are distinctive in what happens. I know 3 is when the prison arc begins, but everything else is just muddy. I know Hershel dies and the Governor starts kicking ass and taking names, I know Rick and Co. got kidnapped by cannibals, but I wouldn't be able to tell you which season. It's just a blur of filler and garbage.
TWD should be cut back to 10 episodes at least. 16 is obviously too much for them.

After really thinking hard I can remember that season 4 was half prison and half walking around, which leads to season 5 being cannibals, half walking around and Alexandria. So season 6 was more Alexandria, wolves, and build up to Negan.
