AMC executives have been dickheads since day one, it's what made Frank Darabont leave. I'm pretty sure conflict with Glen Mazzara was what made him leave too. Season 1 was 6 episodes at $3.4M per episode, season 2 was 13 episodes at $2.75M per episode. I don't know if they ever raised the budget back up even after the viewership doubled. If they did, it was probably solely to cover new contract negotiations with heavy hitters like Norman Reedus and Andrew Lincoln. The Alexandira, Hilltop, Kingdom, Sanctuary, and garbage dump sets probably exhausted most of the money AMC was willing to put into this show. Most of the episodes this season were needlessly extended with cheap footage that belonged on the cutting room floor, just to get as much ad space as possible.

To put it into perspective, Game of Thrones gets like $10M per episode and since season 1 its actors have been getting paid what The Walking Dead actors are just NOW getting in season 7. Pic related is their ratings compared, green is The Walking Dead.

In short, fuck AMC, but HBO done fucked up by turning down The Walking Dead to begin with.
