Pick something unconventional and have the main character use it like an everyday item with no one paying it any mind.

If you're a filmmaking genius you can have something feature heavily in a scene, maybe even make it the main focus.

Examples I had in mind are Indy's whip, the Quarter Pounder in Pulp Fiction and oranges in The Godfather.

One characteristic of the films seems to be to get both a cult following and at least moderately popular. Seems like getting both at the same time is rather difficult. You have thousands of low budget productions with cult followings that never permeate popular culture, and big, mainstream movies that equally fail because of their lack of a cult status.
