I'm perfectly fine when Hollywood adapts a foreign movie or piece of fiction to an American setting with American characters (The Ring, The Grudge, Edge of Tomorrow, etc.), but when they don't and just shoehorn a white character for a role that was clearly meant for PoC, it does stick out like a sore thumb.

Ghost in the Shell happens at the perfect time when the retro-synthesizer style of music is at its peak of popularity. The Major's story is different from the manga, but I would argue it may be equally good. The film pays homage to the original movie in a lot of powerful ways, and does a great job making you care about Motoko. People who are upset about Scarlet being chosen for her role need to seriously get off their leftist obsession with skin color. I give this film an 8.6, not a 10, only because it's intro and outro have a hold-your-hand-through-the-plot feeling that reflects American comic movies, and that doesn't suit the existential anxiety of the source material. This is a great movie with great story, soundtrack, visual aesthetic, actor choice, dialogue, and everything else. I'll probably buy it on Blu-Ray for my (extremely small, selective) collection.

I enjoyed it, obviously it lacks the depth of the source material, but it was entertaining and was a good adaptation of anime, it gave me faith in future live action anime adaptation.

The only thing that concerned me about the movie, and other movies, is that Chinese companies seem to be investing shit loads of money in Hollywood.

While I do hate how critics are giving it poor scores for political reasons, it is also a genuinely flawed film. More power to you if you enjoy it though.
