It kind of still is, but Snake get's a pass because he's a badass. The gun was made for a movie in the 80's and the entire idea was to make it just look cool and visually interesting. It fits the lightly silly style of the movie just fine.
The scope looks like it's for a rifle or something, not like a smaller scope with a long eye-relief that you'd put on a hunting revolver or something (though it kind of appears to be used as one in Escape From New York).

The MAC M10 in it's standard form is unsuited for an optic for this kind of distance, you really couldn't get good mileage out of it at all.
It's straight blowback, so the action is completely inline with the bore, which helps accuracy, but it also fires from an open-bolt (that is, the gun is locked in an open position when ready to fire, then slams shut to fire), and this is very unhelpful for accuracy, an open-bolt weapon is difficult to shoot with any decent accuracy past maybe 100yds with some practice. And that's if you reach that far, .45ACP is kind of slow and not very far reaching, you'd have to arc it over there.

It also has the loosest, flimsiest, wobbliest stock ever (which is why you frequently see it collapsed and folded in most movies). The big silencer (which was the original selling point of the weapon back when it was relevant, because without it it's kind of shit) gives you some good forward grip area, which helps control the rather absurd rate of fire, but it gets warm fast, and when you find a transferable M10 for sale, with it's (separately registered) original silencer, you often find them with a heat resistant fabric cover you're supposed to slip over it.

Personally, I'm kind of is just whatever about TV and movies with guns, it's made and performed by people with little (if any) understanding or experience with guns, it is what it its, I feel it's better to just appreciate the movies that strive for attention to detail on that part (like Heat) instead of expecting everything else to do so.

The Walking Dead gets pretty fucking egregious with it's handling of firearms though, such as rifles missing sights, or a person with an eyepatch looking through a scope with that covered/missing eye.
Also Grimes holds and points his Colt Python revolver (a pretty nice old target gun), like a complete nigger, which doesn't jive with him being a sheriff.

MAC10s are common, but not with the Escape From New York style setup with a scope like that.
I kind of doubt that they kept it with that setup, unless it's an especially notable example most special guns are restored or whatever and reused.

It doesn't even have to be the actual one from the movie, MAC10s are common as said, as are those big old SIONICS silencers, mounting a scope on one wouldn't be hard for a movie armorer, so it's not like this is something that's difficult to reproduce.

It's some SyFy original movie, they often go and shoot movies in Bulgaria, because Bulgaria makes sure it's cheap for you to shoot movies there.

Thing is that movie armorers in Bulgaria don't seem to have access to any AR15s or M16s (I don't see why they can't just ask for permission to import them for their business, but I'm sure there's some bullshit there).
So when the script calls for an M16, they make, or take a ready made Arsenal brand AK and dress it up in parts to make it look vaguely like an M16, and you see a lot of these mashup guns in SyFy channel movies.

I have a feeling most people are just like us in that they're simply sticking to something they already started watching.
