It has yet to open in some big intentional territories which is actually where most of the money is. Lionsgate sold enough to international distributors that their stake is only ~55 million plus marketing. They've basically already started making money on this thing domestically.

The hurdle to surpass is convincing those international markets to buy again in the future. The most important one being China because that market is enormous and they love their giant robots. It won't open there for another few weeks. Also keep in mind that the foreign market totals havent been updated in a week.

It also helps that this is a franchise significantly tied to merchandise. That's a huge money maker that can make a franchise look more appetizing even if its performance is only lukewarm.

This didn't blow the box office open and it's on sort of shaky ground right now, but it wasn't a flop either. It will be a lot easier to say whether this will likely get a sequel in a month or so, but it's not out of the question yet.

It's doing alright. It's at 98 million right now out of 100 million. By the end of next week it will it will be past 100 million. The problem is that the competition is fierce this March and April. Beginning of March it went up against Logan and King Kong which are still both in theatres and both still now going passed the 500 million mark. I think the one certain thing about the sequel is Zedd will look edgy as fuck

A sequel should be 3/4ths Green With Evil and 1/4th Gung Ho.

Have the main plot be Tommy trying to resurrect/summon the Dragonzord. Have the Rangers try to stop him.
Lots of in-suit fight, and possibly one out of suit fight when they figure out who it is.

The finale should be Gung Ho, in that Tommy realizes the error of his ways, but the Dragonzord goes renegade and he and Jason have to work together to stop it. The other Rangers maybe being in peril by the Dragonzord already, like with Titania in Gung Ho.

My main issue with the movie was aesthetics. If you see displays with them on it at stores yellow reads as brown from a distance. Also the megazord was far too rounded out and grey.
