People forgot it's based on a book.

Stallone wrote the scenarios for all the film from the rocky franchise excluding the last one and always stated that those movies were an accurate depiction of how he wanted the story to be portrayed. Money only allowed for more spectacular shots/scenes/fights which didn't at all affect the quality of the movies, and same goes for Rambo.

Morrell put a lot of effort in the novelizations. He did hand wave Rambo's death, but he also made it his own thing. He worked with decent scripts(one by James Cameron ) making it more than hack work. He even got criticized for making Rambo crazy, which he is, but that almost didn't fly with executives. Morrell gave them an ultimatum to let him do what he does best.
