1. A new sequence would be silly since it's his last series and Moffat's last one, too
2. Why would the companion's face be in it?
3. WHY WOULD WE HAVE TO SEE HER WITH HER MOUTH STUPIDLY HANGING OPEN EVERY FUCKING TIME WE WATCH AN EPISODE
>>
>>81191854
I could see them doing a new sequence, even though it's Moff's last series. They've certainly gone to various lengths to promote this series as all brand new, ep1 title included, so a new sequence would help sell it as fresh.

Also, half of Series 7 had a title sequence all to itself before changing again for Series 8.

It's an incredibly serious cliffhanger that goes through with the literal destruction of everything, including the possibility of any more Doctor Who, in the most fatal event conceivable. As in the universe actually ends.

With a development like this, the tone with which it's responded to is more important than the arbitrary plot details. Any manner in which you un-end existence is going to be bullshit, but the way you choose to do it reveals what your story is actually saying. The decision was, in the face of all consuming darkness and oblivion, to resolve it with irreverence, fun and trickery.
Don't think it's anything other than totally deliberate that the super-imposing Pandorica can, when all's said and done, be whacked open in 2 seconds by the sonic screwdriver. We've been set up to see it as a grand power symbol of the Daleks and co., and it gets utterly deflated.
The Doctor being imprisoned in a cube is really no more than a silly spatial inconvenience which, when the notions of space and time have been obliterated, becomes trivial to solve (i.e. by cheating, complete with comedy music).
Even River's predicament, which seemed inescapable, becomes harmless when we realise the TARDIS wouldn't just let something like that happen.
And Amy's death is turned around by taking something horrible about the Pandorica (it doesn't let you escape into death) and recasting it as something hopeful. When the story culminates in ultimate destruction, the Doctor Who solution is to subvert the pieces of the story to create a better outcome.

Instead of maybe some dour-faced and portentous battle in the quantum realms to save reality, the episode that results is basically a romp running away from a Dalek (maybe the most basic possible form of Doctor Who). But each major beat hinges on the emotional bonds between 11 and his companions, this is important because it's 11 who must risk oblivion to atone for his own hubris. Basically The Big Bang is the best finale.

"The Time War: Divergence" in which 8 never dies on Karn and never becomes the War Doctor, so he has to tackle the Time War by himself. This will be 4 boxsets.

Following that, McGann will star in "The Time War: Divergent Divergence" where basically he jumps a time track and has to face the horrors of the Time War but in a different coat. This will be 8 boxsets.

- Too many "trad" audios nowadays. There's nothing wrong with a throwback story every now and then, but too much adherence on making the audios feel more like the old show has really hindered BF's abilities in the last few years.
- Arcs that zig zag through a dozen ranges. Listening to Dark Eyes, it was cool to see the MacQueen Master from UNIT Dominion, but then they added in the Eminence, leading to a clusterfuck of villains. And that's not counting how the EDA's unresolved arcs with the Monk were added into a 5th Doctor main range audio. It's sometimes cool to see all these plot elements bounce between Doctors, to help with the time-travel element of the franchise, but it often leads to mismanaged delivery and poor payoff.
- Matt Fitton writing everything. He's not even a particularly good writer like Dorney or Morris are, so why is he writing every range? At least Briggs has the excuse of being the executive producer.
- Recent companions haven't been memorable. Liv and Helen were all right in the last Doom Coalition and Absent Friends, but they just didn't have that spark 8's other companions like Charley or Lucie did.

It's kino up until 11 goes into the timestream to save Clala at the end and everything goes a bit wonky (because Moffat has no idea how to actually connect this episode with the 50th and is making this scene up on the fly).
Although the shot of John Hurt turning to face the camera nearly redeems it.
>>
Name of the Doctor is literally a bunch of characters standing around in a set, and then moving to sit around a table, and then standing around in a graveyard, and then standing around inside the TARDIS, spouting exposition and not much else.
>>
>>81200040
Not enough action and explosions for you, kiddo?
>>
>>81200240
Not enough plot, is the issue. Literally, 90% of the episode is people stood around talking about things. Then the GI does a timestreamy thing, Clara follows and undoes the things he does (which River said would kill her but, uh, didn't) and then the Doctor walked in and walked back out again.

I'm sorry but you could reduce nearly anything to that description and certainly most Doctor Who episodes. Because the nature of Doctor Who involves characters (and the audience) needing to understand and learn about new, totally unfamiliar situations, working through exposition is one of its chief components. In situations like this the dramatic pulse comes from how the information is affecting the involved characters and the audience's expectations.
For example, the main plot of the episode is a very simple 'the Doctor is forced to go inside the giant TARDIS', but there are a whole array of character and emotional beats for him on the way, as the forces compelling him shift and he reaches different stages of the journey (e.g. making the decision to go, witnessing the graves, his friends being threatened). We also see a lot of the episode from Clara's perspective as she slowly comes to grasp the magnitude of the problem, also setting up the question of how River's ghost will influence the situation.
The point where you can actually say 'standing around' is once they get inside the TARDIS, mainly because various things happen that the characters are physically powerless to stop. Clara is pushed to her final decision by what she's learning from the dialogue. Something handy to remember is that exposition can also be action, e.g. River can tell Clara that the time winds will tear her into a million pieces, as an act of trying to stop her from going in.

>>
>>81201045
I appreciate the fact they can't show us the GI undoing all of the Doctor's actions, but the flashback was still poorly handled. The GI literally stood in various classic scenes. Then Clara walking through some shots. The exposition to help that was necessary but also pretty dull. Them showing Strax and Jenny dying as a result of the GI tampering wasn't really enough to show the ramifications, nor were the stars going out (a blatant rip from S4 too). It just felt a bit messy and badly handled.

Someone or something accessing the Doctor's entire timeline and undoing stuff is a GOAT idea. But not one they could've ever really pulled off well. Which is a shame considering that's the meat of the villain's plot, the same villain who's also a recurring one and the finale big bad.
>>
>>81201085
The entire episode is effectively just treading water until the John Hurt reveal. The GI's plan, as >>81201175 suggests, was a cool idea but executed very badly and maybe they shouldn't have bothered. (They ruined the Great Intelligence with Series 7, IMO.)
>>
>>81201226
Not to mention Richard E. Grant was awful. Wooden performance. He used to be a great actor, I don't know what happened. It's like he learned his lines 10 minutes before filming.
>>
>>81201175
Well I agree with everything you're saying but I dunno what you mean by the stars going out being a blatant rip from series 4. It's called a reference. The entire episode was full of references — the Doctor died and could not stop Davros's reality bomb, which would arguably have been his biggest failure if he failed to stop all of creation from dying.
>>
I WOULD CALL SECURITY BUT
>>
>>81201267
Agreed. Shame, really, after Ian McKellen did a superb voice for the Intelligence. I can see why they drafted the character into E Grant (so he could return with a familiar face in the finale) but he was absolute dogshit.

>>
>>81203444

Moffat said in 2015 that Who will last until 2020, which means that Chibnall is slated to go until 2020 which is three seasons.
>>
So is Capaldi regenerating during the Christmas special or at the S10 finale?

I really hope Moffat planned this shit out so we won't get another TOTD situation again
>>
>>81203763
Capaldi is regenerating on New Year's day. It's a two-part special starting on Christmas.
>>
>>81203763

Capaldi announced long before Moff had to write Ep 11/12 and the Christmas special, whereas Smith left end of S7 - before the 50th which forced the Christmas special to be the crap that is TOTD.

So yeah, I think Moff is not as rushed as he was three years ago. My guess is he regenerates in S10 finale and Christmas Special is a one-off
>>
>>81203763
He said in a recent interview with Sunday Times that he gets a break from filming until he goes back to shoot the Xmas special in July. Xmas regeneration again.

>>
>>81203503
>Why do Brits hate Doctor Who so much?
It's not that Brits hate Doctor Who. It's that Brits, and actually just people in general, wank off to the idea of things they love (or that are supposed to be loved) having gone to the dogs and being embroiled in drama. It's part sadism, part masochism. The ghoulish fascination of awfulness is what sells.
>>
>>81203981

>If it stays successful
>Ratings decline since 2010
>Multiple gap-years since creation

I'm not saying that it can't happen, but Chibnall really needs to hit a home run and bring in a culture as big as Tennant and the RTD era.
>>
>>81203763
It's Christmas. Hopefully it's a fairly un-Christmassy Christmas like Mysterio, since 12 was never really a Christmas themed Doctor.
>>

>My guess is he regenerates in S10 finale
no
>>
>>81204085
You're not wrong, desu.

I think CC will leave after 2 or 3 years anyway. He doesn't seem the type to stick with projects for too long. (I think Moff really was gunna go after the 50th, which would've been 3 years but was persuaded to stay and Capaldi helped him feel re-energised)
>>
>>81204085
At this point even if Who is doing mediocrely in the UK public awareness it's still a cash cow. I highly doubt it's in any actual danger or that Chibnall desperately needs a breakthrough, they'll just keep tweaking until they get what they want.
>>
>>81204085

>>81204166

>>81204174
>>81204214
It is, but I can see them not renewing Who past 2020 and take a 5 year break or something just to get another RTD-esque revival. Make it go the way of Sherlock and get 10M+ viewers every three years
>>
>>81204502
>Moffat just said in interview that if it was up to him he would've announced Peter's departure midseason.
Reminder that this is a hint that they will announce the next Doctor midseason instead
>>
>>81204376

Tennant is still the face of Who for many other people and the reason why RTD was successful. BBC know they can milk ratings just by the amount of fangirls watching his last goodbye.

Capaldi and Smith may be popular worldwide but they aren't the reason why majority of the fanbase likes Who.
>>
>>81204502
>Chibbers isn't a Who fanatic
That might be for the best actually, less self-referential stuff and more appeal to new viewers
>>
>>81204502
>It is, but I can see them not renewing Who past 2020 and take a 5 year break or something
It's a meme at this point, but 2020 and beyond might be a decent time to throw a movie out there with a huge name as the Doctor.
>>
>>81204635
Why did they care about "milking ratings" though? How does that benefit them when they haven't got any advertisers?
>>
>>81204635

Why don't they hype it up now that episodes air on the same day across the planet?

>Overnight ratings placed Part One as the third most-watched programme of Christmas Day, behind EastEnders and The Royle Family with a provisional viewing figure of 10.0 million viewers. The episode achieved a 42.2% share of the total viewing audience, and an appreciation index score of 87, considered 'Excellent'.

Final consolidated ratings placed Part One as the third most watched program of Christmas Day, behind The Royle Family and EastEnders with a final figure of 11.57 million viewers. This is the highest timeshift that the show has received since its revival (the previous highest being 11.4 million for The Next Doctor in Christmas 2008). When simulcast HD figures are added to the BBC One transmission, Doctor Who actually comes out as the most watched show on Christmas Day with a total of 12.04 million viewers, narrowly ahead of The Royle Family and EastEnders.

Overnight ratings placed Part Two as the second most-watched programme of New Year's Day, behind EastEnders, with a provisional viewing figure of 10.4 million viewers (including 389,000 watching on BBC HD). The episode achieved a 35.5% share of the total viewing audience on an evening where an estimated 30 million viewers were watching TV in the UK.[56] Official BARB ratings placed Part Two as the second most watched programme of the week behind EastEnders at 11.79 million viewers; however, when the simulcast figures on BBC HD are added, an additional 480,000 viewers bring the total figure to 12.27 million. When this figure is recognised, the program becomes the most watched of the week. This makes The End of Time only the third instance in which the show has achieved such an honour in its extensive history. Additionally, The End of Time received over 1.3 million requests on BBC's online iPlayer.

It was purely to make it a big event for the show and the most popular Doctor. It certainly worked, grabbed millions, sold shit loads of merch, probably helped Series 5 in the sense that it had a huge audience and most would stick around, plus DT appeared on UK TV about 75 times over the Christmas 2009 period to help promote it. That's insane but that's how popular he and Who were here then.
>>
>>81204803

Yeah, but Chibbers contributed nothing during the wilderness years (unlike Moffat and RTD) and only wrote for Who becase he worked with Julie Gardner.
>>
>>81192536
Hopefully he survives long enough for the 75th anniversary. 12 around any Doctor, old or future, would be GOAT
>>
>>81205050
It was so popular that the BBC thought S5 was impossible without RTD and Tennant and nearly axed the show after EoT.

This might explain why RTD was so self-indulgent in writing those episodes.
>>
>>81205138
It's partly because they saw "Doctor Who" as a show that belonged very much to RTD, Tennant and Julie G at the time. It was their baby. I think RTD had to persuade some execs that the show would thrive and do just as well without them at the helm.

>I am hoping Capaldi will be like Malcolm Tucker and shout and swear at me a lot. But no, he talks very quietly and diffidently, and never loses his temper, though there is a rather steely glint when I ask whether he ever sees Chris Langham, who starred in the first series of The Thick of It, then went to prison for downloading child pornography. No, he doesn't, he says. End of subject.
Er, that's a bit intense.

I always feel bad for chris
he was a victim, he was abused and had CP of himself made as a child. As part of his adult life coming to terms with it he downloaded images of himself along with some others. They explicitly determined he is not sexually attracted to children and he was using the images as a means to come to terms with the abuse he experienced as a child, but he's still registered as a sex offender and had his career ruined because CP laws don't care about intent

Especially since the quote literally says:
>It’s yet to be formally decided but it makes sense to give Chris his own choice of actor to play the Doctor and his companion.

So, everyone knew it made sense to give Chibs his own choice, and assumed he'd probably replace her.

Now we know that…it makes sense to give Chibs his own choice, and he hasn't made the choice yet, but we assume he'll probably replace her.

In other shocking breaking news, we've heard that Chibs hasn't formally decided to ask to keep the show on BBC1 but if he wanted to move it to BBC2 he probably could but it makes sense that he wouldn't.

In the show Capaldi often looks like a very handsome older man. Other times he looks ill and older than he really is. I don't know if that's inconsistent makeup or lighting or what.

>Steven wanted to reveal Capaldi's departure at the midway point to achieve a RATINGS SPIKE.
>Steven was very "upset" when Peter revealed it on the radio

Great. Steven hasn't even got confidence in how fucking good his storytelling ability is. Piece of shit should've stepped down three years ago.

It just makes me so angry how you take responsibility for something so precious and beloved but can't even give it your all. Bastard had to focus on Sherlock, too. Pick one thing. ONE thing.

It was Peter's boyhood dream to be the Doctor. He was so perfect for the part. But Steven couldn't give him what he deserved.

I used to love Steven. I'm not here to hate blindly. It's a hard job. And it's hard to keep going after a while.

But that's why he should've left with Matt.

>It is, but I can see them not renewing Who past 2020 and take a 5 year break or something
Why? BBC Studios are not idiots. The BBC's value as a worldwide-sellable brand at this point is something like this:
>40% Doctor Who
>30% Top Gear
>20% period piece dramas
>5% the original versions of shows that America and every other country in the world has made their own adaptation of and nobody wants to see the original of
>3% people's vague association with the name "BBC"
>2% everything else
>>
>>81206851
It depends on if the story is good. You can tell when he's having fun and when he's not.

For example, in Mummy or Heaven Sent, he looks like an elderly yoga instructor who performs magic tricks for his great nieces and nephews.

In Kill the Moon and Sleep No More, he looks like a senile drunk who plays super-sized checkers outside of Cracker Barrel every Sunday.
>>
>>81206897
He should've left (along with Jenna) after Series 8 imo. Sure the stories weren't all great but it was a decent introduction to a more serious Doctor and tone with a LOT of potential ahead.

Did you not read what I said? He specifically wanted to drop the bomb to achieve a ratings spike.

To counteract the entirely explicable phenomenon of mid-series episodes not getting as much attention as premieres and finales. Shocker. This is a recurring trend that he's noted before. It's not borne out of some belief that the middle episodes will be shit.

The BBC has been obsessed with ratings for well over a decade now.

Their annual reports to Parliament on how they're using the licence fee are public record. And you can see how for a long time, every year, it gets more and more about viewing figures and vague American-TV-industry buzzwords and less and less trying to explain how they're performing a public service, until by 2010 their top bullet points are all about how much money they made from negotiating overseas sales of Doctor Who and Top Gear.

And that's even before the Tories came into power and started demanding that they think more like a business. (Which actually makes no sense, because if they were really thinking like a business, they'd realise that licence fees are the majority of their budget and advertising is $0…)
