repost. just came back from this. aramaki and batou were fucking great. scarjo as the major was good. the visuals were amazing in 3d. the dialogues were ok. the scenes from the original that made it in were faithful to it. only bad part about this movie was that they barely showed anything of section 9.

why does it have like 40% on RT? why is /tv/ shitting on the best live action anime to date? this was more entertaining than the slow original.

I don't get it either. I watched the first 2 movies and the 2 TV series, and I liked it. The director managed to pull things from all 4 of those pieces of work to make a serviceable movie. I think most of the criticism is literally because Scarlet is white.

I was waiting all movie for it to become bottom of the barrel shit, as the reviewers said it would - it didn't happen.

There was an explanation for all the dumb things you would be critical of. The low tech eyes Batou got (which weren't that bad as you could see lenses turning inside of them) had a light hearted sequence to address it.

The fact that the major had a caucasian shell was also explained by the fact that the Robotics company was American, and that her original body was Japanese.

Also, the themes in the original movie aren't that deep in today's standards. And even then, the live adaption still emphasized the idea of what humanity really is.

The fact that they didn't sit in a boat for 5 minutes name dropping philosophers must have inflamed the sores in your asshole or something.

It wasn't really good, but it looked nice. The dialogue was ham-fisted, and someone should count up the number of times they directly namecheck the 'ghost' and the 'shell'. The acting was stilted, which I suppose is fine for the Major. The plot itself was actually reasonably well adapted, and the soundtrack was on point.

The visuals were stunning.

Beautiful film to look at. Not a bad plot. Pretty shit script, awful dialogue and stunted acting. 6/10

And there is your very valid point. I'm sure the Rhino has gained a lot of popularity due to its multiple recent appearances in futuristic scifi movies that proved to be big sellers. Hollywood did make a good choice there I guess. They get a free gun prop on demand for whatever movie they're making, and the gun manufacturer gets free advertisement.

I'm just pissed they decided to do that with Togusa, that's all.

The film took the most accessible aspects from the franchise and dumbed them down to a pretty extreme level.

I ended up liking it though, but I went in with insanely low expectations. It's probably the most visually accurate live action adaptation of an anime ever, and it was entertaining enough. Their recreation of the spider tank scene and Batou chilling with a doberman were neat. Strange that they went with a sort of opposite ending to the 1995 film, where Major instead rejects uploading herself. Soundtrack was a total let down too. Probably going to be too weird for normies overall.

>liking each other before they got kidnapped
All of that was subtly implied. Both of them seem to have moved on, relationship-wise, at that point in the movie. The Major's interest in Kuze is about the same as her her interest in her mother: All part of her finding about her past life. Kuze may be interested in her due to their common origins and was the one to drive her to find out the truth, but he seems more interested in getting her to join in his robot transcendence. You could say the Major has as much romance with Batou as she does with Kuze. There is little in the way of any focus on romance in the movie.

Why was the tank fight bad according to /tv/?

The fight had suitable amounts of environmental destruction, the way the tank moved wasn't cheesy, the gunfire didn't seem pathetic.

Even the her ripping the top off the tank wasn't bad. /tv/ made it seem like it would be the worst scene in the world but it wasn't.
>>
>>81168188
It gives more motivation for Kuze whilst still fitting in with the movie concisely. They're both essentially background details. At least this way, he has some more background with her that you don't have to establish on-screen. If they had him in the hospital, autists like you would complain about how they wasted time shoehorning in a hospital scene so the Major could have a romance with some random fuck. Not everything has to be exactly the same.
>>

No I do actually.

Or you would not have said it was a "ham fisted shoe horned love story " based on 2 seconds of Hideo yelling Motoko's name as she was being torn away.

If you actually watched 2nd gig you would see the Kuze / Motoko angle wasn't far fetched and was probably intentionally borrowing and adapting from the series.

>>
>>81168574
>The film took the most accessible aspects from the franchise and dumbed them down to a pretty extreme level.

Instead of making the anti-cyborg folks right and making the corporation that makes cyborgs the badguys, it should have made the anti-cyborgs wrong (but for relatable reasons) and made one of the bad guys a single corrupt government official/corporate guy. Basically the bad guys end up being manipulated tools of one guy who is cynically trying to use the strengths/weaknesses of a preexisting system to their advantage.

Which is more or less how GitS has always worked, and wouldn't have been too difficult to put into the film as a twist. Just add a scene at the end where they confront the main bad guy after he thinks he's escaped so the Major can explode his chest cavity.

But making the big corporation that does all the cyborg shit the villain is just fucking lazy.
>>
>>81169155
Boy, if there's anything that I love more than 2 hours of philosophical navel-gazing shit is a complete season or two or philosophical navel gazing shit.

Fact of the matter is, Japanese writers are not very good at communicating ideas, let alone complex philosophical musings. Again, Naruto is based on mythological ninjas who are quite different from usual black pajama wearing Katana wielding anti-Samurai kind Americans are used to.

It's not so much that Naruto was a masterpiece, but any US adaptation will almost certainly lose sight of the underlying inspirations because Naruto is so terribly Japanese.

Part of why a lot of foreign adaptations of US properties end up so hilariously bad/off the mark. Like the anime version of Ninja Turtles and the Avengers.

It's actually chinks that are mega butthurt but they use reasons like MUH ANIME to deflect any parallels between assblasted niggers and assblasted chinks. They're way too obvious, any person can see that chinks are mad because the main character is white.

My problem with the film was not Scarlet Johannsen.

My problem with the film was the way Motoko's character was written. In the manga and the anime, every major event in her life since she was cyberized was her decision. Life handed her a choice and she made a choice willingly. She was in control of her life as much as she could be.

The Motoko in this film is a victim. Her cyberization was the result of being a victim. Her battles with Kuze turned her into a victim. Her contention against the "Evil Corporation" made her a victim. At no time was she ever in control of anything.

That's not Motoko Kusinagi.

Besides, the script was a mashup of the first anime film and GITS: SAC Second Gig with the cliche "Evil Corporation" thrown in as a cardboard villain. And the direction was visionless.
>>
>>81171713
You're probably right. Oversea chinks literally worship whites and idolize them and their looks, so they wouldn't really fuss about it like American chinks.

Well yeah the whole fiasco started with a screenshot of the butthole. Looking at videogame footage it is certain it was photoshoped to look more brown, but the thing grew bigger. I remember people just complaining about her ass motions and about oversexualization. Some artists then began doing lots of butt drawings. Then Yoko Taro did his tweet.

>Fact of the matter is, Japanese writers are not very good at communicating ideas, let alone complex philosophical musings

I agree that lots of Japanese shit hamfists their way through any subject, but the American version didn't even try. They replaced anything philosophical with a revenge/origin plot so they can franchise off of it.

Fuck any one defending this piece of shit and stop throwing around your bullshit excuses that the only people who hate this movie is because they hired a white chick. Nobody on this board gives a fuck about her race.
>>
I feel it's getting mostly bad reviews because of the whitewashing thing and because most reviewers seem to be comparing it to the original.

The problem is, the Original GITS movie isn't actually that great. It's basically just people sitting round name dropping philosophers and philosophical quotes to make it seem DEEEEP tied together by some of the best action sequences out there.

Lets be honest here though, if this movie was like called 'Black Widow" and had a Disney and Marvel logo at the front, it would easily be getting like 90% RT scores. I actually don't think this movie was that great, I would give it like a 6 out of 10, but most of those Capeshit movies that get like 80-90% RT scores are like a solid 3/10, This movie alone has better cinematography and visuals than every marvel movie put together.

How in fuck is this movie worse than Ghostbusters Reboot?

>being attached via name to something else that people automatically expect a lot out of.

But like 99% of the GITS franchise is complete ass. Arise is fucking awful, Innocence is fucking awful, the original film is just good again a solid 6-7/10, the rest of the films are fucking ass, Arise again it has to be stated is fucking ass, the manga is a comedy action borderline ecchi series that has almost nothing to do with the rest of franchise.

SAC S1 is arguably the only great thing the GITS franchise has ever produced and nobody is comparing it to SAC
>>
>>81171941
Regardless of the execution of the original movies, they at least tried to be deeper than this puddle they put out. Without those themes it isn't GitS, and thats why people are mad.

>ignoring the 2nd gig

The second series was when they hit their stride and knew how to keep every episode exciting, and well paced. The final few episodes of 2nd gig also had much more going on than in S1 with a great pseudo-villain Kuze to carry it.

Besides that you are right. Arise was bad, and the first 2 movies don't seem 'complete' in the sense it felt more like an exploration of themes. Innocence was pure entry level philosophical masturbation.
>>
>>81172280
What redeemed Arise was the movie. No one asked for Arise to be made but at least when they got to the end of it the movie helped tie it together with the rest of the franchise
>>
>>81172210
They did great with the limited time available to them. It sucks that we probably won't get to see this crew handle cases like in the series, because weaboo faggots and SJWs have a deathwish for the movie.
>>
>>81162962
I just watched this today. I went with zero expectations. I have seen the 1994 film, Innocence and Stand Alone Complex. Just that. I don't consider myself a rabid fan of this series, since I am pretty sure there's more to in in the manga and whatever other source material is out there.

Having said that, this was surprisingly good movie on its own. It is a complete history that I could recommend to anyone with absolutely no knowledge of this series and would probably find the story intriguing and entertainment.

As for me I was surprised to see they revealed the origin of the Major, her true family and her identity. I have no idea if this revealed in the original manga since this was not even discussed in the content I've seen. After two animated films and a tv series with no hints, I could not care less if this is different in the source material. Yes, her "naked" body looks kind of odd, but memes aside, I found all the characters enjoyable. As a product this is very good on its own. Not gonna bother comparing it with the source material.
>>
>>81171941
The original GITS film was a lot closer to Shirow's work than this film was. If you didn't like the original, that's your prerogative. But the original anime film is better than this warmed over corpse.
>>
>>81164785
is actually amazing anon, in that climate I expected a 100% from critics too afraid to do otherwise

Right now it's getting panned by the majority of both critics and fans but at least it has the China market to help make up for it. Those Chinese financial houses would never let it really fail.
>>
>>81172382
thats what i find sad about everyone pre-shitting on this film, it will probably not get a sequel unless it blows expectations. The budget was pretty high.
>>
>>81172342
>a tv series with no hints
They have an entire episode dedicated to her origin in the series
>>
>>81172342
Her origin was strongly hinted at in SAC: Second GIG. She was the girl in the hospital that young Kuze was folding all the paper cranes for. Injured in a plane crash and forced to choose between full cyberization and permanent disability.
