I can barely get passed the horrid acting but seriously? People unironically liked this?

Yes, intelligent people did.

>>81157353
It's awful, but people like this >>81157367 will say "ohh you didn't understand it because you're dumb and I'm really smart".

It was awful. The acting, the script, the kino, the plot, everything.

Ironically, only retards like the film.
>>
>>81157367
Can you explain what you need to be so smaryt for to understand? Can you explain why you liked it?
I mean, I can sit here and name 10 better time travel related films, so I also don't understand why people always said it's the most 'realistically' done time travel film, just because the script has a bunch of scientific words in it.
>>
it was an almost ok movie

>>
Yeah I remember being pretty disappointed with this. I tend to really like intricate convoluted plots, but this was really just in service of nothing
>>
>>81157353
It's literally impossible to fully understand everything on your first viewing but it is nonetheless a pretty mind blowing and clever movie.
>>
I remember quite enjoying this, but I couldn't really tell you percisely why.

I was mostly trying to just figure it out and that distracted me from the bad elements. It's also pretty fucking short.
>>
No.
The only people who pretend to like this are fedoras, because they think it makes them look smart.
>>
>>81157353
Its an indie film with no money. For what they had its well done. But if you need cgi and retarded magazine cutouts to look at, then this isnt for you.
>>
>>81157353
it's kinda bad
there's nothing good in the movie besides "le realistic time travel", something that attracts the redditors in first place
>>
It's an objectively bad movie. Plebs think it's good because it's opaque, they feel like if they didn't get it then it must be an incredibly intelligent complicated film, when in reality it's just made in such a way that it's hard to follow. It's visually basic, the dialogue is workaday. The premise and plot are interesting but the movie is just too shit to carry them over properly.
>>
>>81157353
The movie was about a group of engineers. I would say the stiff and shallow emotion displayed in the acting was spot on.

This is one of those films that is somewhat technically incompetent, a good example of "bad" cinematography (soft or out of focus a lot of the time, barely exposed shots, etc), but still manages to be a good film because it is genuinely interesting and engaging.
>>
>>81157957
At least your post is constructive, unlike the rest of this thread.
>>
>>81157353
It was just boring to be honest. The ending isn't really much of a twist either. You know he never really had a plan for dealing with time travel so it wasn't a surprise when they just sorta go their separate ways.
>>
>>81157723
What's really to understand? Two science guys develop a time machine, and due to neglience the timelines start mucking up and then they make an effort to inform thair "past selves" but thigns get out fo control quick and Shane Carruth leaves for France.

You have to genuinely be autistic to think understanding the perfect intricacies of all the timelines is understanding the movie when it's the opposite. Not understanding them is understanding the film, since it's a demonstration of how incredibly complex and convoluted these sort of time travels would end up being, and how the two characters quickly get in over their heads.

It's not a bad movie though, finally a somewhat accurate portrayal of how scientists actually act and talk, and its brief length means it's not unwelcome, though it is fairly dry and uncompelling.
>>
>>81157723
You can dislike it and understand it, your fucking idiot.
>>
>>81158176
The plot is just a framing device for how this newfound power corrupts them morally and ruins their friendship. It's an archetypal story: power corrupts. The power of time travel corrupted them internally, as they used it for personal gain, and it corrupted their friendship.
>>
>>81158784

Thing is, I feel the movie not being fully understandable in its first viewing isn't because of clever writing, but due to intentionally obtuse writing and filming. You could have kept an identical plot, and filmed the movie in a way that makes everything clear by the end. They just decided to make the movie hard to watch on purpose instead.

>>81158176
Except for the fact that it wasn't negligence, and one of those two science guys had already time traveled before the movie even mentions time travel, and is playing the other for a fool the whole time.

This. I liked the fact the movie focused (or tried to) on technical descriptions. It feels more natural that other 'genius at work' movies I have seen. That could be boring for many people, though.
>>
I thought it was alright. It was pretty cool that they made it on the cheap with such a small crew. For what they made it with it could have turned out a lot worse

>>
>>81161349
Why? I'm not claiming it's some masterpiece, but when I'm really fucking depressed I just watch it and kind of zone out. It's pretty therapeutic. Something about the visuals, sounds, and minimalism just makes it easy to watch when you're sad.
>>
>>81157353
Once you look up am explanation the story sounds really interesting but the fact that this was made by one dude with zero knowledge on movie making on a 7000 dollars budget means there's no fucking way he would be able to present the story in a way that's understandable. The movie isn't confusing for being too smart, it's confusing because it's poorly made

i think that was done on purpose. the filmaker wants the audience to feel like they are lost as fuck and like only the characters can keep up with whats going on. i dont think it is the future of film making or anything but it is a good experimental movie for what it is.
>>
>>81157353

>>
>>81163492

Predestination

12 Monkeys
>>
>>81163449
>i think that was done on purpose.

Not really. For instance, when Character is fighting himself, originally they had intended to use greenscreen to superimpose his face onto the other guy so that it was clear that it was two versions of the same person having a scrap. In the end they didn't for no other reason than they couldn't afford a greenscreen, instead they just got one of the guys to grow a beard and hoped no one would notice that they didn't look alike. Which is why that very important scene is so unclear.

I believe so, I've never seen "bulk" but the room and birdemic are at least enjoyable on some level, even if it's cringe or Ironic, they are fun bad films to watch.

Primer is like watching paint dry. Beige fucking paint. It's not entertaining or edifying in any way, shape or form. It's a horrible experience.

The color of the film is horrible. it's blue or yellow. The audio of the dialog is horrible. The dialog itself with the constant mumbling and interrupting and scientific jargon is horrible. plots are brought up and dropped never to be mentioned again. It's a mess, it's nonsense.

I loved Upstream Colour too.
>>
>>81163352
The thing about Mullholand Drive or any of Lynch's films is that you don't have to fully understand it nor it is needed of you to enjoy the piece.

You can say that Primer is a bad movie when you categorize it as a movie. It isn't though, it's a puzzle you have to put together. Like a meta-interactive film. I didn't like it at all but I see how some might. Primer pissed me off real hard actually.

7000 dollars is more than no money. The film had a small cast of nobodies, used no CGI, wasn't shot in any expensive locations, wasn't shot in HD. It looks like exactly 7000 dollars worth of movie, honestly.

No, it isn't. You can understand it and dislike it.

Also it came out in 2004, that's 13 years ago, there have been 6000 YT videos, various blog explanations, plot timelines, deep analysis of the film by now.

No one still doesn't understand it. And amazingly, you can still dislike the film, even after knowing the entirety of it's "2deep4u" plot.
>>
>>81167006
But most, like you, by being dumb, are actually unable to 'get it'.
>>
>>81166802
All you have to do is explain why the movie is good, anon. If you enjoyed the movie it should be enjoyable to talk about why you enjoyed the movie, that's generally how things follow. I think you just want to like it so you tel people you like it so much that you've actually convinced yourself you like it, otherwise you;d have something to show me that illustrates why Primer is a good film.

>>81166821

It's visually bland and uninteresting. There are no particularly memorable compositions or sequences. If I ask you to recall a particular scene you'll probably think of some guys in shirts hanging around - because it's 90% of the film.

The score is essentially nonexistent, or at least generic to the point of being negligible

There are no particularly compelling characters or character dialogues.

Granted that it's not visually, audibly or dramatically interesting, we're left with plot as a means to evaluate the film. But the narrative is conveyed in such an opaque and contrived manner that most of the audience come away from a first viewing with no understanding of it. He fails to communicate his plot, and at this point plot is all he has left to stand on. Coherence has a complex narrative, dealing with parallel realities instead of time travel, but it conveys it in such a way that it can be followed.
>>
>>81167130
>But most, like you, by being dumb

I didn't think it was that grand and I didn't hate it. But yah, I understand it. Again, as evidence by this post, it's your only defense against anyone who isn't praising it to high heavens. Seriously, grow up.
>>
>>81167006
it really shows how plebs have no idea about film. My problem isn't even people liking the film, but people who think it's smart and try to figure out all the details and think that makes it good. Complete idiots.
>>
Primer is pretty good for what it is. Much of what it doesn't do well is a result of the budget and the scope. There's a shitload of information being crammed into the film. But, if you look past some of the flaws, it does a lot of things very well. It's a great primer for how complicated this interpretation of* time travel can get even if you're trying to avoid fucking things up. It's not deep, nor is it really trying to be. It's just a big puzzle.

It's true of a lot of films. Very few of them are actually good, because they rely too heavily on how "out there" and "exotic" the premise is and don't do all the other things you need to do to make a good film.
>>
>>81167158
I watched it without knowing much about it and thought it was very well made with good acting and editing.
I still remember it now and it hasn't disappeared from my memories into obscurity.

That's enough for me, for you... You're free to watch films you like. I don't care if you don't like it.
>>
>>81167227

There can be something to "get" without being deep. The idea being that the people who don't "get" it don't actually understand that the film is a lot more complicated and well thought out than they are giving it credit for.

ugh. anyway the film had its flaws i hate it gets defended with "muh time travel"

People not able to explain why they liked it is pretty pathetic lol.
>>
>>81167382
Yes, but people are trying to say if you "get it" then you would enjoy it, and if you don't then you didn't "get it"

That's a fucking retarded argument, and a cop-out.
>>
>>81167391
You know what's odd about what you wrote there. Is that, I haven't even said one thing about the time travel in any of my comments.
>>

Fair enough. I would agree that any time people argue that there is something to "get", they should at least explain what exactly they think "it" is.

It's not the convoluted story that makes it great, it's everything else. I couldn't tell what the fuck is going on in it, but I love watching it. The cinematography, soundtrack and overall flow of the movie is excellent. Serves as a good example that low budget films don't have to be schlock.

It's one of my favorite movies ever and I can't explain anything that happens in the story.
>>

Ok. You somehow called me an autist in the process of being 'balanced' because I said I'm relaxed.

You seem to have a problem with favorable comments on youtube discussing Primer.

That's somehow as bad as circlejerks over 100 layers of nail polish or other shitty vacuous videos on youtube.

I still don't get what the prosthetics and JGL is all about.

I didnt say primer, i said looper. Maybe try reading comments before trying a sarcastic reply. JGL was in looper, as i was talking about LOOPER its relevant.
Also stop being suck a triggered cunt and take the stick out your ass. Its not that deep senpai.

I liked it, I thought they kept killing themselves and entering another dimension? but I guess that's wrong. as convuluted as it is, you have to admit it provides a more "realistic" form of timetravel than other movies

I actually like Primer a good amount but I wasn't really interested in Carruth until I watched Upstream Color, which is masterfully crafted. I'm genuinely surprised people don't talk about it more, it's incredible. Only problem is the girl is a much better actor than the guy, but he's still good so it doesn't really matter.

If you hadn't posted a screenshot I would have assumed you were talking about the wrong movie. I can't fathom how anyone could actually hold this opinion. If you think the frame you posted is an example of good cinematography you need to reevaluate your thoughts and feelings on film.

>>
>>81166882
I didn't get it on the first viewing. I wasn't sure if I liked it or not.

So I had to read an analysis on google and re-watched it, and once I "got it" I liked it.

I think the problem was the director assumed too much of the audience, thinking we're all smart enough to understand it.

This stuff was intentional. Its a formally interesting film in many respects. His next project, Upstream Colour, used a lot of the same techniques but without the amateurishness.
It's not all perfect, but for the scope of what he was trying to make (an art-house 'realistic' sci-fi) with the budget it had, considering it was the first film ever of a former software engineer or something, it turned out very good.
Of course the comic-book movie fans that inhabit /tv/ don't like it, they hear "sci-fi" and are disappointed its not JJ Abrams garbage.
