My God it was bad.
Weakest point of the movie was the story, it was fucking shit, they tried to Americanize it to the fullest.

Scarjo and Pitt were two lovers that lived in the 'free' area or some shit like hippies away from all the tech bullshit, till the evil corp came, caught them, extracted their brains so they could turn them to a new kind of androids. Pitt somehow escapes and goes rogue. And Scarjo is like a Police Enforcer that is after him, they both have erased memories. They shoved in the spider tank in the end just so they could keep everyone happy.

Who wrote this? I mean seriously, give me a fucking break. It was a mess.

Director too focused on including the scenes of the original but forgetting the why.

The ideal story is actually revealed half way through the film but the writers were either too stupid to notice, or couldn't do anything about it.

Kuze should have retained his real memories, as he was previous prototype - figures they wouldn't need to mess around with that, then the *whitewash* would have had a legitimate reason to do the fucking mind meld once she realised her memories were fake AND gay.

Not necessarily.

There's a big difference in the settings. In this version, Motoko being a full-cyborg is something new and experimental, while in the original, full cyborgs were fairly common.

But neither is just about full cyborgs anyway, that only happens to be an aspect of the setting.

Kuze then invades his mind and then he kills himself.

where did they ever bring refugees in in the source material? They were still exploited, all they did was prevent them from getting nuked. I hated the force awakens for that very reason. Just cramming in a bunch of references doesn't make a good movie. I much prefer something that has a clear focus rather than try and touch on a tonne of shit from a franchise.

I've only seen the ghost in the shell 1995 movie and what I liked about that was it's clear focus on the story it was telling, while creating a fascinating setting.

That's what made Logan great, it didn't get bogged down with having all the mutants make cameos or trying to squeeze in their story. It stayed focus on its little chunk of time and place of its setting.

I don't know about this GirS film, I liked the way the 1995 film animated (no pun intended) the philosophical ideas it explored, calling that "chatter" and just praising how much fan service it's done really makes me think this film isn't something I'd like, just like TFA

The story about his funky eyes is that they're the trademark of the Rangers, the unit he was part of before joining Section 9. They wear them as badge of honor and someone who has them is a brother and you don't kill brothers. In one episode of S.A.C they are attacked by a small team of Rangers and they stop shooting because they saw Batou's eyes.
Turned out that whoever baddy Section 9 was after had enough power to mobilize Rangers.

Motoko being turned into some rebel refugee was way out of character IMO. Motoko keeping her human brain also didnt make sense considering she regularly jumps off buildings and does other acrobatic things that would send forces through her body that would damage her brain just by the fluid pressures alone. And she is an elite hacker, which is something that implies a cyber brain in use.

Big bad ebil corporation was also another thing that bothered me. The puppet master kind of took a back seat to the company, when he is supposed to be the BBEG. Section 9 just buys cybernetics from the company and thats it.

Yeah, I wish they'd used the original creation music during the creation scene. The score was good but it wasn't iconic like that chorus was. Something about the creation scene doesn't work as well when the music isn't actively unsettling you.

>>
>>81140363
She plays the character well, and there's not a lot of action overall. Hell the two best action shots in the movie were in camo so she wasn't even necessary. The character isn't written exactly the same as the usual Major but she does a good job with the material.

Casting her was just to get Avengers people into the theater, but they do a decent job with the twist as to why she looks white as fuck.
>>
>>81140348

One big criticism I keep seeing is that it wasn't original. But I don't really think that's a valid criticism, not every movie has to do something new and its unrealistic to expect every work of art to do so. That said I hate that every cyberpunk setting has to be dystopian, one thing that was cool about GITS was that it was a future that seemed possible and it didn't rely on the evil corporations control everything plot point.

The puppetmaster wasn't in the movie, it was Kuze who was a villain from the second season of the animated series. That said the story was mostly OC with a couple scenes from the 1995 movie thrown in. I liked that it stayed in tradition in a sense that every incarnation of Ghost in the Shell has a different continuity. I wouldn't like a straight up remake, though the story they went with was a little too Robocopish.

>gritty cyberpunk aesthetic
The clean/sterile looking labs and major's apartment juxtaposed with the shithole hong kong style streets/clubs/drug dens looked great in live action. I think they went overboard with the holograms in some scenes but overall did a good job.

>complete ass backwards philisophical view compared to the original
Right. In the original film the major is growing disconnected with humanity and becoming more connected with the digital. She feels trapped inside of her body. The puppet master can sense this when he trawls the net and pinpoints the major to talk to her because it wants to experience and compare a human 'ghost' with his artifical ghost, meld the two to create a weird kind of superbeing. The major is unaware of this for most of the film but is persuaded over towards the end. The themes are of technology outgrowing humanity/nature and being the next step on the tree of life, like the next step in human consciousness/evolution. It also explores the idea of digitally implanted memories/ real memories being interchangable and indistinguishable along with information in general. The major doesnt even know if her memories are real or if they're fabricated and in the end doesnt care if they are or not. She embraces a LACK of individuality where she can freely share information with others and where the borders of self dont exist any more.

The scarjo film completely throws this out of the window. Major doesnt even WANT her fucking cyborg body in the new film and hates the fact that she isnt human. She hates the fact that her individuality has been stripped with her and turns against the evil corporation that did it and then refuses to meld with her bf because she wants to meet her mummy again. They obviously didnt have the major melding to open a possiblity of a sequel but it spits in the face of the original's themes as does the major's whole character arc/backstory in the new film.
>>
>>81140875
They don't use making of a cyborg until the end credits. All the music is original (and actually pretty decent) other than the end credits.

I just realized they combined the puppet master and kuze into a single character. I suppose this is the reason Major was made into a rebel refugee because kuze's elements might have taken too much time to explain. Now that I think about it, they crammed a lot of the source material into the movie.

Most people are giving it a 6-8/10.. opening and visuals are reportedly good along with supporting characters and most people are saying it's not like the DBZ/Avatar live action.

So based on that is it worth me spending my money on and supporting?

The important thing to note is that in the situation of a "mixed" movie like suicide squad, different reviews sound like they saw completely different movies. The ones who praised suicide squad never mentioned editing, or they called the visuals great or something. The ones who hated it said the opposite.

In this case, ALL the reviews praise the visuals, the acting, shit like that. They just disagree on the depth. In a case like this you do genuinely just have to watch the movie to know if you'll like it or not.
>>
If only people had the mindset for what this was trying to be.

If this movie got the support it deserved, IT would be up there with Fast and the Furious and Transformers.

My biggest issue is with the Major's personality.

The Major is the kind of person that can be confident and in control, even when in the body of a little girl.
Scarjo's Major, though, was self-absorbed and let her emotions run her decisions.

To me, that was the biggest flaw of the movie; making the Major seem vulnerable.

Well that's pretty dumb. What a shame, SAC 2nd GIG was probably my favorite GitS thing, weak stand alone episodes excluded.

Pause that diddly famalam, I don't think that's the truth. The world building was absolutely fine and done very well. The discussion with the president of the African Federation, the liver to drink like law school, the I'm human "just the way I like it", the "I don't want to scare the dogs", the invasion of Kuze's hideout that featured the back alley enhancements, the city's entire world's best futuristic lipstick on a pig feel, and everything else was en pointe.

The problem of this film:
>First
it was a weak amnesia identity plot plain and simple
>Second
The characterization for most characters were hollow and provided no connection to the viewer
>Third
The film forgot i's "why" and focused on dazzling and faithful visuals while losing most of the substance found in the the Luddite questions and the intro to Transhumanism pontification rife within the franchise
>Fourth
They just couldn't leave race alone, lol. I would have perfered that she was just Major Mira whatshername

So why does SJW's want an asian actress to play Major when Major is based off White european features?

Rewatch GitS 1995. There are female robots in a room that look Asian and then compare them to Major. Not the same race
>>
I enjoyed this movie so much because it carried similar elements from 80s, 90s movies so maybe it was my nostalgia reminding me of those but still as a movie fan, people should enjoy this for what it is.
>>
The only way for them to pay for the visual effects was for them to sell it as a blockbuster. In order to sell it as a blockbuster, it needed a popular actress as a lead.

There aren't any Japanese A/B-list actresses.
>>
>>81142557
And also, they COULD have made a deep philosophical Netflix show or even HBO maybe but the budget wouldnt have been as big as this one and they wouldnt have been allowed to have big practical sets.

When did everyone start calling her just "major" and not "the major" or "Major Kusangai"?

Sounds like shit to just say a title or rank interchangably with a name.
>>
>>81142326
She isn't a bad option she's just mediocre. She doesn't really look all that much like how the major was drawn and the make-up and hairstyle featured in the film really clash with her facial aesthetics. She didn't do a bad job considering what she was given and I know that they got her for name recognition and all it's just that they could have found someone better for the job regardless of them being white or asian. They weren't really going for what is true for the franchise and I get that feeling with the entire movie. Like how the plot was more about the individual re-manifesting itself rather than the individual losing oneself in the sea of information and the collective. When I was a kid I didn't really get that about the original movie but when I rewatched it later on in life I felt it was really existentially frightening. This movie is almost feel-good in comparison.
>>
>>81142507
>SJW's
well there's your problem. If there is even a whiff of cultural appropriation the SJW shit their pants.
>>
>>81142507

SJW's are fucked up. In Boston there was a Kimono display at the Art museum (long tl'dr) anyway some fat land whales (3 of them)(None of whom were japs) showed up and started screaming about cultural appropriation..racism..orientalism oppression and other assorted nonsense and all this other homovan shit. They demanded the display be shut down or they would not stop screaming and protesting by being smelly. They had the Japanese person that actually brought the display over from Japan try to explain to them that they WANTED IT THERE AND WANTED TO SHARE THE CULTURE. They weren't having it. It devolved into some actual japs, jap Americans and some JAPSP's showing up and telling them to fuck off and stop being fat and stupid.

Naturally the Museum of Fine Arts solved the problem by pulling the display and apologizing to the fat NON SLOPE landwhales. Fucked up world brother.

I can see how the original philosophical points of the series would be depressing for a blockbuster audience.

They were balancing a lot of things with this movie. And since the movies and the TV series are stand alone I'm really not too bothered by the choices of this movie.

>>81142600
I started calling her major when I was kid. Probably because Batou and the others would sometimes start talking to Motoko like: "Major, ...". I guess I never corrected it.

Yeah. Watching Innocence, Kim's speech about how animals understand death and humans do not etc is pretty depressing. How humans cling to this world etc.

Anyway I liked the positive ending they gave it with Scarjo now knowing who she is and Section 9 moves on with her on other missions

Just got back from seeing it.

It was very, very good - the plot was focused for the most part, the acting was good, the score was great, the visuals were perfectly cyberpunk, even some of the stuff they lifted from the 1995 movie was done spot-on. The first act stumbled in a few places, especially when I didn't know what differences and similarities to the source material to expect, but after that it definitely stood on its own.

>>81142600
As far as they knew she was Major Mira Killian, it might have sounded kind of jarring to the audience. But they do call her Major in SAC pretty often.

Now...when will they hire Anno to direct the live action Evangelion movie?
