Hypothetical here. You need to eat 3000 to keep the same weight you have now.
If you want to lose weight you need to eat 1500, and if you want to gain weight you need to eat 4000.
OK with me?
Now when it comes to calories, it doesn't matter where they come from. 1500 calories is 1500 calories. It can come from meat, fish, veggies, candy, ice cream, etc. Doesn't matter, the body will use it as fuel.

Now here's the rub.
If all I want to eat is cupcakes to get those calories, I can. I may only get one cupcake before I reach the limit, but hey. Fuel.
On the flipside I may want to eat more, so I go with veggies, a piece of baked chicken and some beans. I can eat one meal of that and get 500 calories. to reach 1500 I can have 3 meals.
Now.
If I eat nothing but 1 cupcake a day, then yeah I won't be feeling too snazzy at the end of the week vs eating 3 meals with variety. But I will be losing weight, as I've only consumed 1500 calories per day for that week.

Now this based solely on the idea I don't exercise. If I excercise, i'll burn calories. which means I can increase my caloric intake, as LONG AS I DON'T GO OVER 1500 PER DAY, I will still lose weight. If I don't increase my intake, the exercise will take off the weight faster because the calories are being burned off.

tldr:If I don't go over a certain caloric limit, I can either eat shit, or good food and still lose weight.

Year one: 800lbs to 450 pounds within a year on a very strict diet. 1 pound a day is realistic when you're that fat. Would be bed-ridden, but would play wow and shit with a sick gaming setup

Year two: 450lbs to 250lbs. As I start to weight less, it takes more work to lose fat, but luckily for me I'd have some mobility back and could exercise

Year three: 250lbs to 180lbs. Would basically lift weight a lot and become aesthetic
