The next Doctor is NOT Phoebe Waller-Bridge! She is filming the Han Solo Star Wars movie at the moment, she has a second series of Fleabag coming up in which she stars and writes. On top of this, she is also show running Killing Eve for BBC America.

It isn't Kris Marshall either. The fact he left Death in Paradise close to the time Capaldi announced his departure is nothing more than a coincidence.

It's Hayley Atwell. She's doing the BBC adaptation of Howard's End at the moment in a similar way that Capaldi was filming The Musketeers when he was cast.

Why does the BBC treat Doctor Who like shit?

Moffat has said they give much larger budgets to their other shows which aren't as popular as Doctor Who, he says the budget they get ''is good'' but it isn't what he'd like it to be and they could do better in order to have more monsters/special effects on screen.

By S8-10 of classic Who, according to Terrance Dicks, just about all of the former producers, script editors, and regular writers were sick of doing science fantasy and pitched serious, realistic sci-fi shows, like Moonbase 3 (Terrance Dicks and Barry Letts), Survivors (Terry Nation and Terence Dudley), and Doomwatch (Kit Pedler and Gerry Davis), and half the writers and directors from Doctor Who went to work for those shows.

So why has nobody involved in NuWho felt the same urge?

Not that I think that Peter Harness or Mark Gatiss writing grim, serious, hard sci-fi set 50 years in the future would be a great idea, I'm just curious why they aren't interested.

The fact that Chibnall's worked with her on Broadchurch is a good sign, but mostly I think it's because she isn't conventionally attractive. I think one of the biggest risks of having a female Doctor is that the writers and show would make her very sexual. That's why I don't want it to be Atwell, even though she's a good actor.
