The next Doctor is NOT Phoebe Waller-Bridge! She is filming the Han Solo Star Wars movie at the moment, she has a second series of Fleabag coming up in which she stars and writes. On top of this, she is also show running Killing Eve for BBC America.

It isn't Kris Marshall either. The fact he left Death in Paradise close to the time Capaldi announced his departure is nothing more than a coincidence.

It's Hayley Atwell. She's doing the BBC adaptation of Howard's End at the moment in a similar way that Capaldi was filming The Musketeers when he was cast.
>>
>>81083893
Please be true, all gender stuff aside she's a great fit, would be a new sort of personality for the Doctor (Waller-Bridge would just be another 10, Kris Marshall would be a black hole devoid of personality), and is a better actor than both of those other choices.
>>
>>81083930
It's not true.
>>
>>81083961
Prove it friendo
>>
>>81083893
>Hayley Atwell is doing her job which means she's the new Doctor
>>
>>81083971
Andrew Buchan will prove it in a few weeks
>>
Can we just pretend the last 7 years never happened and get RTD back?
>>
>>81083996
I would be so disappointed with that choice. He's not a bad actor, but he's very one-note. So many better, available choices, even just from the fucking cast of Broadchurch.
>>
>>81084016
You sound like you got bored and started changing the subject, anon. Are you ok?
>>

this
>>
>>81084067
All Buchan has going for him is that he's /chibnallsguy/. Surely the BBC has a say too.
>>
>>81084067
Andrew Buchan is a recognisable face in the UK, after playing one of the main characters in Broadchurch. Also he's worked with Chibnall before.

Dunno who it will be though, but i'm guessing they've probably cast someone, or are in the process of casting, right now

I only forgive RTD for doing Waters of Mars, it's the only episode that he did it right, otherwise it's an awful writer and executive producer. All the seasons of Tennant had that comfy feeling that ruined the suspense since we knew it Rose was a fucking ex machine so it was Donna and Martha, nothing exciting.

Only Murray Gold did good in that time

A bra was an item of clothing designed to support a woman's breasts. Along with women's underwear, bras were sold in a "ladieswear" section in shops. Craig Owens questioned Kelly about a "metal rat" in the ladieswear section, leaning on a rack of bras. (TV: Closing Time)

Sally Morgan kept sports bras in her room in the Black TARDIS, which she used as proof that it was definitely her room and not Hex's. (AUDIO: Black and White)

In 2007, an edition of the magazine Peach featured celebrity children's television presenter Sadie, wearing only a bra, on the front page. The issue included an article about her "confessing" that "I'm no angel." (TV: Out of Time)

During the meteor strike that hit the Starship Harmony and Redemption, the Twelfth Doctor and River Song fell through a floor. A minute later, a diamond that River had been about to sell also fell. Instead of catching it with her hands, she decided to catch and keep it in her bra. (TV: The Husbands of River Song)

Why does the BBC treat Doctor Who like shit?

Moffat has said they give much larger budgets to their other shows which aren't as popular as Doctor Who, he says the budget they get ''is good'' but it isn't what he'd like it to be and they could do better in order to have more monsters/special effects on screen.

Seriously this is going to eventually backfire on the BBC, Doctor who is their cash cow, and they are neglecting it in many ways.

>>
>>81088650
>Why does the BBC treat Doctor Who like shit?
Honestly? Because they can.

Blame RTD and Moffat for finding ways to do more with less, and never giving up no matter how desperate it got. That means the BBC expects that kind of miracle work as standard for the show now.

Doctor Who gets higher worldwide sales than any two dramas with twice its budget. And when they cut the budget, the worldwide sales don't go down, they keep going up anyway. So what motivation do they have to restore the budget?

>Seriously this is going to eventually backfire on the BBC
Of course, but "eventually" doesn't show up on the annual presentation to Parliament.

(And remember that after the reorg goes into effect in a few days, BBC Studios won't even be caring about an annual presentation to Parliament, but a quarterly balance sheet.)

>>
>>81091886
What does this mean for Doctor Who? Will the budget get bigger? Worse?
Is Chibnall fucked?
>>
>>81091800
And maybe we could have a government-owned organisation that does journalism in the public interest, while private organisations with openly acknowledged partisan leanings could give their spin on the events without pretending they were being balanced.

I'll bet it would lead to a golden age of democracy for about a century and a half, until people get lazy and start getting all their news off whatever gets forwarded to them on Facebook and don't care that 20% of it is fake, 50% of it is irrelevant, and the other 30% is stuff they already knew.
>>
>>81091955
According to the PR guy it means the budget will be bigger.
>>
I hope Philomena Wank-Bucket isn't the new Doctor. She was unlikeable in Broadchurch and seems like a very dull actor and person.
>>
>>81091955
In the short run, it's probably good for Chibnall's budget. Doctor Who is BBC Studios' biggest property for overseas sales, and for merch, and it's pretty tied up in their worldwide brand identity.

Also, so far, it looks like their plans to cut the budget involve firing employees and replacing them with cheap temps, not cutting back on show budgets.

I think the bigger worry is what kind of interference Chibnall may get from the people above—who will be probably even more than ever people who know nothing about the creative side of TV.

And eventually they may decide to increase his budget by 70% by turning the show into a coproduction with Amazon or something.

When did he get on the list?

There seems to be a weird pattern in what people want.
>First Irish Doctor: Kris Marshall (0% Irish)
>First African Doctor: Alfred Enoch (surely some African ancestry from his third-gen Brazilian mother, but he has no idea how much)
>First Jewish Doctor: Tom Rosenthal (1/8th Jewish, or maybe 1/4th, knew nothing about Jewish culture before being hired for Friday Night Dinner)

Maybe people should stop pushing Hayley as the first female Doctor and just go for a slightly effeminate man and then claim that as a victory.

They're married, by the way. Don't know if I mentioned that.

Matrimonially disposed, I mean.

In a legally-recognised relationship - Jenny and Vastra, that is.

Wife and wife. Together. Two women. Jenny and Vastra. An official lesbian relationship. Homo reptilia, Homo sapiens, Homo sexual. A civil partnership, with rings.

Oh! And they're married, too.

There are 80 million people worldwide who watch Doctor Who.

Of those 80 million, there are a few thousand who really want the Doctor to be female, and a few thousand who really want the Doctor to not be female. Maybe you're right that the second group is bigger than the first, maybe you're wrong, but who cares? Certainly not the other 79.99 million viewers of the show.
>>
I will only accept 1 female Doctor as the Doctor ''trying out'' what it's like to be a woman. It really is a gimmick lads, the character is male regardless if Time Lords can no gender bender. And male is how the majority of the audience will always see the character. Again i'm not against one actress playing the Doctor, but that's it, then back to be male for the rest of eternity.
>>
>>81095460
Think you're underestimating it. I'd say most of those millions would be against a female Doctor but just are not vocal about it.

This is the thing about both Social Justice Warriors and Social Injustice Warriors.

You all believe that everyone in the world cares deeply about your issue of the day, and then go looking to explain away the fact that 99% of the world doesn't care about that issue, and that, of those who do, 99% of them have some moderate position that the extremists on both sides refuse to believe is even conceivable.

But there is nothing to explain—you're just getting triggered about something stupid, and nobody else is getting triggered about it.

New Doctor is Andrew Buchan. 100%. I don't know when it's being revealed, but it's "very soon", within the next few weeks. There has been something filmed at the studios, and I'm told they will reveal this on some sort of "live Doctor Who Extra" which will be on the BBC and streamed on online platforms.

Also the episode titles for the upcoming series are being announced this weekend
>>
>>81097307
I would really not bet on 13's identity being announced before the start of Capaldi's last series. It's no good putting all the hype onto a new actor, and then trying to draw people's attention back to the incumbent for a whole run of episodes that the new one isn't even going to be in.

Maybe she just hasnt gotten around to you yet. Or maybe for her tindr is her personal attractiveness scale, like those old rate me websites and really she has no intentions of following through. Regardless of her reasons it surely has nothing to do with you as she doesnt know you and hasnt met you. If she's rejecting you on the basis of aesthetics and the most innocuous and briefest interactions, I assure you anon she's not worth the thought. For most guys it's a numbers game anyway. In sales they talk about the law of averages, 10 out of 100 people will say yes to damn near whatever you're selling. Surely the numbers are a little different but the principle still applies. The more women you encounter and move on the more chances you have at a yes. Don't take rejection personally. Keep trying. You'll be fine.

The 13th doctor won't be announced until after S10 right? They wouldn't actively sabotage capaldi's final run by overshadowing it with the news of his successor right? That VFX article talked about how they announced capaldi's departure when they did so it wasn't still the big story once S10 came around, surely they'd do the same for announcing 13?

I want to see if I have a chance at acting
>>
>>81105540
There is no auditions, they usually just get picked. You would have to get into acting in a few UK or Irish shows and then the showrunner might like you're acting and say yo he's right for the part even if you haven't been in much. But just off the street? no chance m8.
>>
By S8-10 of classic Who, according to Terrance Dicks, just about all of the former producers, script editors, and regular writers were sick of doing science fantasy and pitched serious, realistic sci-fi shows, like Moonbase 3 (Terrance Dicks and Barry Letts), Survivors (Terry Nation and Terence Dudley), and Doomwatch (Kit Pedler and Gerry Davis), and half the writers and directors from Doctor Who went to work for those shows.

So why has nobody involved in NuWho felt the same urge?

Not that I think that Peter Harness or Mark Gatiss writing grim, serious, hard sci-fi set 50 years in the future would be a great idea, I'm just curious why they aren't interested.

Something happening.

Oddschecker Next Doctor Who betting site has been closed down. So, have checked some individual betting sites.

Phoebe Waller Bridge's odds dramatically shortened over last 12 hours (average about 1/3).

Is this confirmation? Announcement imminent?
>>
>>81105864
It's exactly as much confirmation as it was when they shut down betting a couple weeks ago because of a run on Kris Marshall.
>>
>>81105580

>>
>>81105864
i'm going to laugh so hard if its a female doctor
i don't even give a fuck either way but all the butthurt on here is gonna be hilarious to read
>>
>>81105899
They usually do auditions, but not open auditions.

The process seems to go something like this:

>The showrunner has an idea for what he wants for the next Doctor to be like.
>He talks about it with his producers and his casting director and his wife/husband and whoever else he can trust to keep a secret and comes up with a short list of people.
>He starts watching lots of clips of the people on the list, and narrows it down to 3 or 4.
>He invites all of them in for auditions.
>Then he sees someone completely different on TV and suddenly gets a totally different idea for how he wants to write the character, brings that person in for an audition, and casts him.
>>
>>81105931
The people who will get butthurt over that are already finding something to get butthurt over every day anyway.

And I doubt it will be any more entertaining if it's over a female Doctor than if it's over some 8-year-old quote from someone who directed one episode. When people have their baseline settings on "it's the end of the world", there's no room to go bigger.

This is what you do if you want to be the next Doctor.

And suspending betting always makes the run bigger. Which the bookies all know. When they do it, they're gambling that the free press they'll get from everyone covering "Betfair suspends betting on next Doctor" will be worth more than the bets they'll lose to everyone rushing to Ladbroke's or PaddyPower because they can't bet on Betfair.

Worst case scenario of a female Doctor is that the writers fuck it up, the show gets cancelled, and we enter Wilderness Years 2.0 and all become authors of TDA's.

Win-win.
>>
>>81107150
Why?

This is a serious question. Maybe you see her playing the role in a way that I haven't imagined.

But for most of the other women people have suggested—Olivia Colman, Hayley Atwell, Tilda Swinton—I can immediately see how she could be definitely the Doctor, but not the same as the other NuWHo Doctors. With her, all I can see is, as another anon put it, smug-mode Tennant.
>>
>>81105931
You know I haven't actually seen much vocal opposition on /who/ regarding the notion of a female doctor. Any opposition is a vocal minority, and part of them are probably "I don't mind it but I wish people would stop being so smug and arrogant about it"
>>
>>81107250
Thing is most Irish actors are very quirky, dark and humorous, and have great range so I honestly don't know what the BBC is waiting for. The BBC do seem to have a slight anti-Irish bias though, has been that way for years. Because the roles are there, ITV hires billions of great Irish actors, but you rarely see Irish actors on BBC shows.
>>
>>81104118
That autistic chick stabbing the guy in Revelation of the Daleks. I think there was another 6th Doctor serial with a stabbing too.
>>
>>81107336
Well, I'm not actually familiar with her work so I don't have very good reasons. The fact that Chibnall's worked with her on Broadchurch is a good sign, but mostly I think it's because she isn't conventionally attractive. I think one of the biggest risks of having a female Doctor is that the writers and show would make her very sexual. That's why I don't want it to be Atwell, even though she's a good actor. We already have anon's making stupid posts like >>81106166, I couldn't stand years of Atwell-posters posting webm's of her cleavage every episode.

Colman would be great though, for the same reasons. She works well with Chibnall, she isn't conventionally attractive, and she's a good actor. Colman would be ideal, actually, but I'd be fine with Phoebe too.
>>
>>81104118

Tbh Clara and Amy managed to be good characters in my opinion despite being incredibly attractive. It would be interesting and, heck, even progressive to have The Doctor be a very attractive woman but have no reference made to her looks or sexuality. Unlikely, mind you.
>>
>>81107874
Here's a thought, if you actually knew anything about UK and Irish tv then you would know most Irish actors work in the UK on UK shows because there are barely any Irish tv shows and the ones that do exist besides some very old ones are shite. Literally all our best tv actors are in the UK working on British shows. REEEE learn your media faggot.

If you don't want a sexualized female Doctor, she may not be the best choice.

Her entire standup career is about female sexuality. And Fleabag is basically "What if Sex and the City and/or Girls was actually funny, and was also fictionalized but recognizable human reality instead of trying way too hard and ending up ridiculously unrelatable?"

By the way, if you like Olivia Colman, you really should watch Fleabag, whether you care about Phoebe Waller-Bridge or not, because she is amazing in it.

Good point.

And Sarah Jane and Zoe are probably even better examples—two of the best companions ever, as well as being the most attractive. (And if you're gay or female, substitute Jamie, and it works just as well.)

Anyway, I can see how Hayley could be written very badly, but I can also see how she could be written very well—even without ignoring her attractiveness (and without writing is as Girl Tennant or Girl McGann).

Nonsense. All your best TV actors end up in Hollywood working on American shows and movies. (And why not? They make a lot more there, and American women like Irish accents a lot more than English women.)

There wasn't a companion I didn't like as a character all the way from Jamie to Leela and they are all stunningly attractive. The two Romanas are stunning and cute respectively, but still manage to be intelligent and witty intellectual rivals for The Doctor (at least to begin with for Romana I).

I don't really know what my point is... Doctor Who have a really good track record of hiring women who are both sexy and capable of putting in a good performance. Not that non-particularly-attractive companions like Donna can't be fantastic, too.

>>81108949
Yes, the first one is shit, and yes, you can safely skip it and still follow the rest. Maybe read the summary of it on the Whoniverse Discontinuity Guide.

In fact, you can skip Exodus and Apocalypse as well if you want. They're not shit like Genesys, but they're nothing too exciting, and Revelation and Crucible are the two books that really kick off the NAs.

Rereading Genesys as part of my masochistic quest to read all of the NAs in order, even the shit ones, John Peel does come up with a few great lines that really capture S26 Seven, like:
>I never make stupid mistakes. Only very, very clever ones.

Still, definitely not worth the other 10,000 lines that you have to slog through to get to the handful of good ones.

>>81109036
>In fact, you can skip Exodus and Apocalypse as well if you want.
Do you really think starting with Revelation is a good idea? It's very good, but it's not the easiest book in the series. Why not ease into it with Uncle Terry's Let's Save Hitler?
