In the book it's less them running a train on Beverly and more the twin symbolism of both a way to bring them all back together at a point when they were about to fall apart, as well as taking that final step into adulthood.

The passage states that the otherwordly force (the Turtle, or whatever it is) that brought them together and helped them fight It is fading after It's defeat in 1958. The bond that they shared was breaking, leaving them stranded in a complex maze of tunnels under the city. They're bickering and right about to start fighting when Bev realizes that sex, what her father was so afraid of and what the other girls gossip about (calling sex "It" in another contrast) is what can bring them back together. They lose their virginity to each other in a symbolic gesture.

Additionally, each of the kids is forced to confront adulthood when dealing with It in 1958. They deal with traumatic events like death, violence, terror, abandonment, and abuse alongside concepts like morality, responsibility, sacrifice, and power, all at the age of 12. They're forced out of childhood's protective bubble (this is a contrast to the 1985 encounter, when they have to force themselves to think like children in order to combat It as actual adults). Alongside this, Bev (and some of the boys, though it's really only explored with Ben) deal with the growing pains of puberty. Sex is the final act of adulthood, sexual maturity signalling the end of childhood. In the book it's the final barrier that gets broken because of their struggles with It.

Honestly with context the "gangbang" isn't that terrible. I'm surprised more people aren't upset about the scene where Bev's It-addled father tells her he wants to eat her plump cunt and slurp her clit up between his teeth, but then I'm pretty sure nobody complaining has actually read the book.
