You obviously haven't.

In the book pw isn't always depicted as scary clown. He's often depicted as just that - clown.
When he sees them in the sewer, he doesn't go "oh no a monster clown", no, the scene is more akin to "what the fuck is a clown doing down there?". And thats what happens a lot in the book, before the scary shit takes over.
Anyone who thinks that the story is "scary clown" from the get go is a fucking idiot. Because the way the book moves from introducing this weird character into pure horror is what makes it so good.

Anyhow, Pennywise is just one of the many illusions it creates to terrorize the children.
It's always described in menacing ways.
Curry is the one who made the clown "funny".
Also It was a fucking drider from the Dark Tower dimension.

Pennywise's forms are being kept from promotional material right now, probably not to spoil anything. The Leper is confirmed, and it looks like The Black Spot fire is what he uses to terrorize Mike. I'm personally fine with them not showing anything and just giving is the Clown for now.

He was obviously in "kill mode" in the trailer too. From everything I've read, he DOES have a gentle, playful side.

If the movie uses Pennywise's soothing voice and persuasion (and I remember Georgie being weirded out but really wanting his boat lol) I can see it working better.
