I really appreciated NGE but for me, the best anime I've ever watched has to be Darker than Black.

Second season was ok to meh, first season was fucking glorious. I legit haven't ever felt more sympathy for any fictional character, drawn or not than Amber. The story unfolds in an excellent pace, none of the main characters lack depth and the premise is original.

Bonus points for the best 'love' story (amber's love for Hei) I've experienced on screen.

10/10 would watch again.

You do realize that the ending of 2.0 is meant to be critical of this mentality? On the surface its just a typical mecha "main character saves the girl", but the implications are important. The world literally ends because Shinji wants to save a girl, no matter the costs. It just so happens that its the same girl who symbolizes a "Rreturn to the womb" and safety from others. Its the exact anti-thesis of NGE, where confronting the painful world is necessary for growth. So it shouldn't be a surprise that this kind of avoidant behaviour leads to the (near) end of the world. Then in 3.0 Shinji naively thinks he can fix everything and return to the dream-like "pre-Near-3I" world when really he's just being manipulated by forces outside himself because his understanding of the world is still childish.

It should be easy to connect these ideas to real life and otaku specifically. Anno is trying to get anime viewers to at least be self-aware again, and at best to try to wean them off self-insert fantasies. If this means turning them off to Eva in general, then so be it, because it certainly seems like this is the path he's going for 3.0+1.0.
