Well, Edgar Wright's case for example. He had his own idea of an ant-man adaptation that got canned by Marvel because it didn't go for the direction that they hoped for.

When you try so hard to make a cinematic universe, you can't let a director's style or creativity interfere with your own financial interests, specially if you are the one who hired those directors.
