The general was a tragedy... Ken Bones was based as the bald old male General, I aint even mad they made him a woman, i'm mad that they replaced such a great and GOAT actor with a talent less hack simply because she was black and female.

I really liked Ten. His last specials are some of my favorite who episodes.

People always refer to Seven or Nine as being the darkest doctors but it's Ten by a really long run and those episodes highlighted it.

>"I don't want to go."
I hate how people (especially teens and normies) interpret this line as a bad way to go. But it's one of the saddest lines in the history of the show. The 50th special poked a bit of fun at it but the essence stayed the same.

He's let go of so much that he was too scared to let go of the only thing that remains.

According to 10 it feels like dying. Although 5's regeneration felt "different" and he thought he might be dying. So idk.

Why is he allowed to rub his armpits on Peter?
>>
>>80970808
It's always funny to see fan pics with RTD.

With his stars (especially Tennant and Barrowman), he always slouches down to make them look taller, which I don't think is even conscious. But when you see a pic of him with a fan, you're reminded that the man is a scary 2m 125kg giant.
>>
>>80971338
It feels like something a cultured young lady doesn't want to experience in mixed company. Why else did Romana leave the room to get a little privacy between each new body when she was regenerating?
>>
>>80971443
Stop crying, Billy.
>>
>>80971338
>Build-up

Probably a feeling of convulsion/inevitable buildup like trying to hold back a hiccup or cough, but deeper and probably all over the body with a warm fire-y feeling inside. Perhaps a soothing/drowsy sensation too.

>Regeneration itself

Explosion of intense warmth, rushing dizzyness and confusion, massive burst of energy/feeling of renewal and I imagine when its over it feels like stepping out of a sauna or hot shower.
>>
>>80971458
>tfw RTD will never beat you up at the school yard
>>
>>80971409
I think 10 meant it in more of an "Ego death" kinda way instead of literally. As in the personality changes so much that it might as well not be you.

I've been trying to wrap my head around it really. I guess regeneration, psychologically, is like if you suddenly transformed into yourself ten years from now or ten years prior? So like, it's still "You" but a different version of you. I was a very different person ten years ago, with different opinions, tastes, quirks etc and I'm sure it will be the same in 10 years, but obviously I'm still "me".
>>
I have just heard that there will not be an on screen regeneration scene for 12 - 13
>>
>>80971600
But there's definitely a lot more change between two incarnations of the Doctor than over 10 years of a normal human life.

Even the trivial things—do you know anyone at 32 who hates all the food he liked at 22?

But the big stuff too. Sure, the basic core "never cruel or cowardly, never give up, never give in" is always there, but look at 10's "a man who never would" speech. It's hard to imagine 2 or 11 giving that speech, or even really understanding it. Or 5, for almost the opposite reason (it's hard to imagine him noticing a desire to murder in revenge in the first place).

>>
>>80971338
I've always imagined it to be a bit like a seizure. An overwhelming black fog that creeps over your body and consciousness, persisting no matter how hard you fight or try to delay it, advancing with every heart beat until you're viewing the world through a pinhole and then nothing, just darkness.
Coming back is like being shot out of cannon into a star-field of light, shapes forming out of nothing, sparking with some kind of energy, feeling like you're inhaling ice or some kind fire that oozes to your extremities, feeling almost electrified, and basically high as hell for a couple of hours afterwards. Sometimes acting erratically or saying things that don't really make sense.
>>
>>80971913
I loved the way Claws of Axos got that whole thing done in two scenes at the start of episode 1. Just as you're thinking, "Holy shit, are we going to have to watch Derek Ware doing this all month?" the Axons declare him too stupid to live and that's it.

Suppose it gives 10 a little more leeway with his moaning and mopeyness.

10 didn't have a very long lifespan and it seemed like he enjoyed being the energetic swashbuckling heartthrob, so suddenly having that come to a crashing end must be pretty disappointing and the fact that he was entering his final incarnation.

Was 10 the incarnation the Doctor was most attached to?

He's having every cell in his body die and rewritten. It's painful. I imagine it's an intense burning, but not one that he's completely conscious of. I imagine the brain blocks a lot of it out.
>>
>>80972243
I think he was most attached to 7, but not so much for the personal reason that he enjoyed being 7 as because he didn't believe the universe could survive without him. Although he obviously did mellow out a bit toward the end, as seen in the TV movie.

For personal reasons, there's 1, who complained that his body was wearing thin, but still held out until he couldn't go on anymore.

And then there's 6, who stubbornly resisted his earlier incarnation wanting him to die because they were afraid he was going to become the Valeyard and his next incarnation trying to get him killed so he could come into existence and become Time's Champion.
>>
>>80972411
>There’s many, many problems with [Trump] as a human being, but he’s not [racist], and there just might be a chance something good will come out of that situation.
I'd hardly call that "supporting" him.
>>
>>80972656
Yes it is.
>>
>>80972683
If I said you were a terrible person with many, many things wrong with you as a human being, but there just might be a chance something good will come out of your existence, would you take that as a compliment?
>>
>>80972725
Fuck off cats
>>
>>80972609
>For personal reasons, there's 1

He's referred to him being 1 like someone does their goth stage when they're a teenager though. I recall something like 1 being grumpy and self-important in the Doctor's eyes because he was young and trying to be grown up.

I think it makes sense to hold onto your first body for as long as possible desu, and then regret it later.
>>
Nyssa or Tegan /who/?
>>
>>80972350
Johnny Rotten is a twat. He'd be the first person to tell you that. And I'm sure he thinks it's hilarious that anyone's interested in his opinions about anything other than how to be a twat.
>>
>>80972855
But that first time you consciously build an identity for yourself—are you ever as attached to your identity as you were then?

Every punk kid says "I'm gonna stay hardcore until I die, and if I don't, kill me". No middle-aged man says "I'm gonna stay a PTA organizer, monthly softball club member, and moderate Republican until I die, and if I don't, kill me".
>>
>>80972975
>But that first time you consciously build an identity for yourself—are you ever as attached to your identity as you were then?

In the Doctor's case, yes, because unlike normal people his various personalities aren't a result of personality development and slow eventual changes, they're literally dice rolls. I think he's ultimately more pleased by some than others.

I think the curator makes it clear that Four was his secret favourite, probably the one he looks on as the most fondly and the "Golden years". If there were any incarnation he was nostalgiac for, it'd be Four.
>>
>>80972498
Seizures aren't exactly painless. However the impending loss of consciousness and the fear associated with it generally supersedes all of that. You get a pretty decent endorphin high out of it. Muscles ache for a day or so afterward, like after an intense work out.
It can't exactly be a fun experience regardless.
>>
>>80973046
How often do you have seizures?
>>
>>80973103
Depends on my stress levels or potential triggers, but I'm usually good for one a month.
>>
>>80973042
Wait, are we talking about the one he was most attached to at the time, the one he's retroactively fondest of, or the one he'd most like to return to if forced to make a choice?

Because they're pretty different things, and I think 10 is high on the list for the first one, but pretty low on the other two.
>>
>>80973194
woah what triggers those things?
>>
>>80973194
Are you seizures pretty consistent in severity, or variable?

A friend of mine who had a seizure disorder told me that the most pleasurable thing in life was the relief when she felt a seizure coming on but then realized it was going to be a tiny one. And that wasn't just hyperbole; she sometimes skipped her meds for a few days in hopes of getting a tiny seizure, even knowing that it could lead to a really bad one.

For the relief to be that intense, I'd hate to imagine how horrible a bad seizure must feel.
>>
>>80973223
Anything that makes me anxious or makes my adrenaline spike. The one guaranteed thing is to talk to me about medical procedures especially when applied to me or someone I care about. I have to hear it though, like text is fine.
>>80973313
Pretty variable. Sometimes i just like pass out or just seemingly stare off for a long period of time, Sometimes it's a grand mal and I'm shaking, foaming at the mouth and pissing myself. I don't think i've ever felt that kind of relief that it was a tiny one, not to go as far to try and precipitate one. They're too scary for that. I've had pretty serious head injuries from falling etc.

Depends who it is. Tilda would be great. Olivia Colman would probably be great. Hayley could be amazing or terrible, depending on how they write her.

On the other hand, Phoebe Waller-Bridge seems like a mediocre choice at best. (By the way, she's surged in betting all weekend, and is now ahead of Kris Marshall at most sites.)

And Anne Hathaway would be terrible in every possible way.

>And then there's 6, who stubbornly resisted his earlier incarnation wanting him to die because they were afraid he was going to become the Valeyard and his next incarnation trying to get him killed so he could come into existence and become Time's Champion.

Ok so I knew about the whole 7 trying to murder him bit but what's the start about?
>>
>>80977329
The two go together, from the same handful of VNAs, mostly Head Games and Room with No Doors.

7 colluded with the first 5 incarnations to kill off 6 and then lock away even his memory. But 7 feels guilty about this because, while 1-5 were trying to prevent 6 from becoming the Valeyard, he was just using them because he wanted to be born so he could become Time's Champion, and in fact that guilt is what's going to create the Valeyard.

Of course as soon as 7 considers that he may have actively manipulated his past incarnations, he decides that would be impossible, and the whole doors thing must have been a delusion brought on by fear.

And it's also not clear how this fits in with Spiral Scratch and The Last Adventure, both of which contradict the image in Love and War that all the other NA stuff was based on. If the whole flashback where he was schizophrenically trying to commit suicide by tractor beam with one hand and trying to activate the HADS with the other never happened, than all the rest must be a delusion.

funny thing is, it was an attack he actually used on hillary during the campaign - and with moderate success even. It likely contributed to her just missing out on the electoral college votes in some of the tight states
I don't think it works as well on trump because he has a reputation for tweeting at 3am and there's a constant outpour on the news of all the shit he does every day. I'm sure pictures are good enough for confirmation bias for some, especially for people who already hate the guy, but other facts don't match up with that narrative anywhere near as well compared to hillary who would go days without being seen anywhere let alone having campaign events

You've come to one specific conclusion based on your pre-existing world view. Other people have come to different conclusions based on their own world views (eg the failure was planned and was a necessary part of negotiation to bring everyone to accepting the middle ground a la "art of the deal")
There is no way for an external observer (that includes you and most other people) to know which is true - despite this, you latched onto the explanation that you liked the most due to it fitting what you already believed. That's confirmation bias, and everybody does it.

Except the problem was that many traditional Republicans felt that it didn't go far enough. They won't accept a moderate middle ground that softens the edges of the existing proposal when they think the repeal bill as it is doesn't do enough.

Did it piss anyone else severely that Doom Coalition doesn't conclude its own arcs? Big Finish listeners, how is the War Doctor in general and how does he weigh against other Doctors? Also are his stories good?
>>
>john hurt had cancer and still graciously returned to record some audios
>eccleston still shunning the show
>>
>>80980452
Just to clarify my position, I'm a big fan of Big Finish and think the best Doctor Who stories in any medium have been made there.

However, the War Doctors audios are some of their worst work. They are terrible. They are not worth buying, even if you're a big fan of Sir John Hurt. They are especially not worth buying if you're a fan of the concept of the War Doctor, because they're an abominably awful execution of the idea. He's written basically as a toothless 9, with absolutely no War aspect, he doesn't even begin to approach 10's level of aggression, let alone 7's.

The stories do not convey the nature of the Time War. They are all bland typical traditional stories, most of them with Daleks. There are no abstract elements. There are no notably dark elements.

The first War Doctor audio is quite literally about him drinking juice. I am not making this up.

Not relevant to the point I'm trying to make outside of the fact that you used your pre-existing beliefs (and not """facts""") to agree with the notion that he's tired. That much is readily observable. The specifics of what you believe don't matter here.

>second bit
we'll have to wait and see. They might accept a more moderate plan a second time if they realize it's their only chance to repeal obamacare (which may or may not be in the process of self-destructing at the time of a second bill if trump gets his way, a further motivator to pass anything that replaces it). Or, if a plan is moderate enough, then potentially enough dems could support it to make up for the repubs who think it's not conservative enough. Maybe. No guarantees.

My only point is that these things are not clear cut and peoples opinions are purely that, and any suggestion that any of this shit should be treated as actual facts is stupid
>>
>>80980452
Honestly, he's good, but his stories mostly suck. Badly. They don't do much with the fact that he's The War Doctor. The War often isn't even relevant, but, worse, when it is, it's boring.

I may be judging him somewhat unfairly, because most of the other stuff I've been listening to recently is first-5-years Big Finish. But I don't think so, because almost everyone else I've talked to seem to agree that his stories suck.

Are you delusional? I think you've got such a bad case of confirmation bias it might need medicating, friend. Why would any democrat want a more moderate - (re: right of centre) repeal for the greatest democratic success story of recent years?

>My only point is that these things are not clear cut and peoples opinions are purely that, and any suggestion that any of this shit should be treated as actual facts is stupid

Opinions are based on facts though. We observe reality and draw on the evidence we see to develop an idea. Nobody's even suggested that he is tired, either. The phrase "I think he looks tired" suggest that a) it's an opinion and b) he APPEARS tired. You seem super worked up about this.

>>80979565

A guy that's up til 3 am tweeting shit is probably going to be tired the next day, since he's an old man and has to get up early to go presidenting and shit. The fact that he pulled the bill before it got voted down? I'd say that's a guy who got sick of fighting, e.g, tired.

>>80980571
The War Doctor was good for precisely one minute at the end of the Name of the Doctor, and then proceeded to be terrible throughout the Day of the Doctor because Moffat can't actually comprehend things like trauma or emotions, and can't write for a Doctor who's gone to a dark place. That's why s8 Doctor is an aspie fuck and why s9 Doctor punches a diamond wall to death only to have his mind wiped, because the idea of a Doctor that learns and changes and grows is as alien to Moffat as the Doctor is to earth.

That's one interpretation of the data. There is more than one interpretation and you have no way to assess which is correct. None of us do. That's how reality works.

I agree the War Doctor was a terrible idea. Should have just used McGann since Moff couldn't convince Eccleston. I don't like the "durr 8 was too nice and romantic to blow up the Time Lords", because that's literally why it's interesting, and Big Finish had been slowly and steadily transforming him into the sort of man who could.

Also I just fucking hate shoving a new Doctor in the order. I place him amongst the Valeyard and the Watcher as an offshoot thing. Seeing him in pictures between McGann and Eccleston makes me rage. He wasn't chronologically in between them and he's not a proper numbered Doctor. We don't put 10's clone Handy in the pictures, why do we put Hurt.

>john hurt had cancer and still graciously returned to record some audios
Honestly, if he didn't have Big Finish, I think he would have found something else to do.

Remember when they asked him when his cancer went into remission so he could work again, and he said "What remission?" He wasn't going to be some old man dying in bed, he was going to be John Hurt, acting his ass off, as long as possible.

I'd like to believe I'll be like him when my time comes, but I doubt I will.

What made you come to that conclusion? We can eliminate untrue propositions by investigating and interrogating them. ...what? The War Doctor is literally a retcon. Everyone admits this. This is no secret. Moffat came up with the idea after Eccleston decided against appearing. The War Doctor was thought up in 2012. The fact there was a narrative gap for him doesn't change the fact he is quite literally retroactive continuity.

>>

http://www.bbcamerica.com/anglophenia/2015/11/steven-moffat-reveals-how-he-created-the-war-doctor

“I wrote ‘The Name of the Doctor,’ which built up to a punchline of the Doctor walking into his own timeline to rescue Clara. No idea what he’d find there. I just knew that whatever he found there would launch the 50th."

“The first version was David, Matt and Chris [Eccleston] together. With whatever involvement we could contrive for the other Doctors, but – being brutal – it had to be Doctors that still looked like their Doctors… I think Peter [Davison], Colin [Baker] and Sylvester [McCoy] were better deployed in The Five-ish Doctors than they could ever be elsewhere.”

“I knew that Chris was almost certainly going to say no. I met him a couple of times and he was absolutely lovely. He met with me because he didn’t want to say no through his agent or a phone call or email. He wanted to do it personally… His reasons are his business and he’s a very private man. But it’s reasonable to say he really cares about Doctor Who. He’s well versed in what’s happened since he left, and happily chatted away about Amy Pond by name.”

What if there was an incarnation of the Doctor none of us knew about? And, coincidentally, he was played by the most famous actor in the world? Specifically someone who might have been cast as the Doctor during the long hiatus. For instance, John Hurt…”

-2013
>>

>>
>>80982270
Is Moffat delusional? John Hurt is a famous actor, but certainly not the most famous in the world.
>>
>>80982304
Yes there was. There wasn't intended to be a regeneration in between 8 and 9. RTD originally gave clearance for a comic to show 8 regenerating into 9. There was promotional material for Series 1 describing 9 regenerated in 8's clothes. 11 wasn't treated as a final regeneration, shown in Nightmare in Silver, The Angels Take Manhattan, and The Impossible Astronaut, among other episodes.
>>
>>80981773
War Doctor isn't mean to just be pew pew pewing with a gun, and in fact they explicitly say he never used one.

War Doctor is basically apeshit angry oncoming storm timelord victorious doctor we see flashes of in NuWho, but actually carrying out his empty promises.

He had some left over from when River brought him back to life but not enough for a regeneration proper. Though, why his use of that energy would bother River when River was aware that the 11th was the Doctor's final life (since "Husbands" states that she just came out of Manhattan and she stated that the Doctor had "limits.") is a mystery.

You're not following what I'm saying.

There are narrative gaps and allowances to make the War Doctor make sense in the fictional continuity. That is what you are pointing out. There is no in-universe reason that a War Doctor incarnation doesn't make literal plot sense.

However, the War Doctor, from a meta perspective, from the real world of Moffat and RTD, was not planned. He was a retcon to the original idea of 9 being the incarnation after 8. No one denies this. This is not a contested fact. >>80982270
This is the man who invented the War Doctor flat-out telling you he invented him in 2012.
>>
>>80982519
wtf are you trying to say, moff fucking admits war doctor was an asspull after he couldnt get eccleston and youre trying to say he pulled off some le epic masterplan? why are you defending an idea the fucking writer admits isnt true
>>
>>80982621
>trusting anything moffat says
Dude lies all the time. War Doctor was probably planned since he took over at least.
Maybe even back during RTD, he left a gap, what for??? John Hurt of course.
>>
>>80982755
Ah you're trolling, I guess I should have realised when you didn't respond to me pointing out the 8-to-9 comic plan RTD originally approved, and the promo story of a freshly regenerated 9 in 8s clothes, but instead just to clumsy retcons in Moff's years.
>>
>>80982421
Then he's just the Doctor. There's nothing that separates him from any of the other Doctors, and yet, that is the fundamental premise of his character - that he waged war. Except, it turns out, by those standards, pretty much all the Doctors did, in one way or another.
>>
>>80982755
That's blind retarded fan worship.
>>
>>80982755

If you're going to say "but the writer was lying" whenever someone brings up a valid point to you, there's literally no meaningful conversation to be had.

Hi oldcan
>>
>>80982811
Not trolling.

>you didn't respond to me pointing out the 8-to-9 comic plan RTD originally approved
That was before he decided to do a gap. He probably thought John Hurt would be a good Doctor and told Moffat on his way out. Moffat of course saved it for the 50th.
>>
>>80983155
okay now you're baiting
>>
>>80983190
How am I trolling? You think they just pulled out the War Doctor and cast JOHN HURT last minute? He's obviously lying. RTD could have showed 8 regenerating on the show, he didn't. He left the gap for John Hurt to come in, just as they probably planned together. You don't have to do the le everything RTD did is shit meme. He's not a bad writer.
>>
>>80983788
I love RTD, but I don't think they planned a secret doctor that far back.

>Time Lords could will themselves to die by attempting to regenerate when they had no more regenerations left to use, as Azmael chose to do. In this case, Azmael was hosting an evil consciousness and chose suicide to prevent it from escaping. (TV: The Twin Dilemma) The Eleventh Doctor likewise chose to use this as a bluff to hold off Mr Clever from taking over his mind. (TV: Nightmare in Silver )
Don't know how canon is this tho
>>
>>80984278
I'm surprised that that statement is even there. The Doctor never said that it was a bluff. The Index File is normally very picky about assumptions like that.

Most arguments are based on appeals to emotion and obscuring or misrepresenting the other side.

I want to break free
I want to break free
I want to break free from your lies
You're so self satisfied I don't need you
I've got to break free
God knows, God knows I want to break free.

I've fallen in love
I've fallen in love for the first time

And this time I know it's for real
I've fallen in love, yeah
God knows, God knows I've fallen in love.

It's strange but it's true
I can't get over the way you love me like you do
But I have to be sure
When I walk out that door
Oh how I want to be free, baby
Oh how I want to be free,
Oh how I want to break free.

But life still goes on
I can't get used to, living without, living without,
Living without you by my side
I don't want to live alone, hey
God knows, got to make it on my own
So baby can't you see
I've got to break free.

I've got to break free
I want to break free, yeah
I want, I want, I want, I want to break free.

When Rassilon was going insane on the Final Day, the General kept it together.

When the Doctor needed to coordinate with the War Council, the General trusted him.

When Rassilon himself called on his men to gun down the Doctor, the General risked his life and stood by the Doctor.

The General only ever kept his cool and played by the clear and objective rules of morality. He helped the Doctor; revered him. And the Doctor killed him.

Whether or not regeneration really feels like death doesn't matter. If the 10th Doctor was breaking down over it, then the 12th Doctor is NOT allowed to give a big speech or have a big sob when his time comes. He's not allowed to, since it's, according to him, just Man flu.

But, again, the regeneration thing doesn't matter to me. It's that the Doctor shaved possibly hundreds of years off of the General's lifespan. If a Time Lord plays his cards right, he can live for tens of thousands of years. The Doctor took all of that possible life and experience from that man — a man who didn't even deserve to be wronged. All he wanted to do was preserve time. The Doctor? He wanted to cheat and break the rules, like always, just to get his way.

And you know whose fault it is?

Moffat's.

Not to mention that the 11th General was cool and calm and had an awesome voice. The 12th was just a misandrist who wasn't even cool-looking at all. Fuck her. Fuck Moffat for shoehorning that in.

You know this meme has been going on long enough that he probably is legitimately of age now

He was definitely farking 16/17 around his debut a couple years ago though.
>>
>>80986747
I agree on all points. It was clearly a case of "because it's 2015" virtue signalling, which I'm not inherently opposed to Moffat doing (even if it did make me lose respect for him), but he totally assraped the Doctor's moral code and handwaved it. The least he could have done is continue the theme that 12 is willing to kill, which would have potentially made for some interesting redemption stories for 13, but he's clearly not going to do that or have 12 show any kind of remorse for doing it at this point.

I'll be glad when Moffatt is gone because of this one scene alone.

>>80986887
That would actually explain a lot

$5000 says Cats was. In fact Cloister is probably the only trip above the age of 18
>>
>>80986747
...that's literally the point. The whole point of Hell Bent is that the Doctor is going too far to save Clara, that their relationship is unsustainable. The Doctor doing something messed up totally plays into that, as does his petty attempt to deflect it (man flu).

So, I mean that's the idea. And um, it's kind of pathetic you're that bothered by the General's jokey idea about men.
>>
>>80987277
Thank you. I've been thinking about that scene for an hour, reading other people's opinions and looking and hoping for a refutation. You gave me one that satisfies me, and I, being an easily-pleased human being, redact my statement.

Of course, it does sort of tick me off that he'd actually forego the whole moral code of never being cruel or cowardly. I guess I should stop thinking of him as a perfect fairytale hero.

>>80987438
That's cool man. Ignore the posters being dicks to you about your opinion, I've noticed in a few threads lately after someone makes a point other anons will repeat it in a dickhead way, I think it's to try and encourage drama.

Doctor can be a perfect fairytale hero, he is more often than not, that's why it makes for interesting stories when he strays from that IMO. There's always comfy 12 eps like Robot of Sherwood to chill out to and just watch him be a good dude.
>>
There's some discussionkino in here tonight lads. Turns out the newfags are useful for something.

You'll turn into adherents of the repeated meme soon enough though

I just get the impression that they're newfags. They're so... pure
>>
>>80987697

Do grills consider it uncool to be a Doctor Who fan? I've heard DW has a lot more female fans compared to other sci fi series.

>>
>>80987786
Copyright issues.

The "Audio Adventures" section for each Doctor now says:
>Big Finish Audios are protected by copyright and not available
>>
>>80987778
Doctor Who definitely has a bigger ratio of female fans than most other SF stuff. Off the top of my head I can think of six female friends into the show, and only two other guys, but the proper non-anecdotal demographic breakdowns show it's higher too.

Plenty of girls and guys will consider being a fan uncool, but certainly there are more girls into DW than most other SF franchises.
>>
>>80987786
I'll bake the new bread
>>
>>80987778
In my experience, about 5% of the female population responds positively to me telling them I like Who.

The remaining 95% instantly think you are an autist. Same ratio goes with saying you are into anything Sci-Fi/Fantasy tho
