Watching this the first time it felt like a Malick satire, but it turns out to be pretty engrossing when you leave your expectations of narrative at the door. Excited for Song to Song now.

>Perhaps no film in the history of cinema follows the movement of memory as faithfully, as passionately, or as profoundly as Terrence Malick’s new film, “Knight of Cups.” It’s an instant classic in several genres—the confessional, the inside-Hollywood story, the Dantesque midlife-crisis drama, the religious quest, the romantic struggle, the sexual reverie, the family melodrama—because the protagonist’s life, like most people’s lives, involves intertwined strains of activity that don’t just overlap but are inseparable from each other. The movie runs less than two hours and its focus is intimate, but its span seems enormous—not least because Malick has made a character who’s something of an alter ego, and he endows that character with an artistic identity and imagination as vast and as vital as his own.

>As such, “Knight of Cups” is one of the great recent bursts of cinematic artistry, a carnival of images and sounds that have a sensual beauty, of light and movement, of gesture and inflection, rarely matched in any movie that isn’t Malick’s own. Here, he—and his cinematographer, Emmanuel Lubezki—surpass themselves. Where “The Tree of Life” is filled with memories, is even about memory, “Knight of Cups” is close to a first-person act of remembering, and the ecstatic power of its images and sounds is a virtual manifesto, and confession, of the cinematic mind at work. It’s a mighty act of self-portraiture in dramatic action and in directorial creation.

i has a more narrative feel to it i guess, but i don't really think it's any more narrative-intensive than any of the post-ttol films. someone said it's his most character-driven film since at least the new world, and i think that conveys the sentiment more clearly. it's still extremely elliptical and ephemeral, but there's a strange, almost invisible grounding that i couldn't find in knight of cups.
>>
>>80941094
That sounds like it may be due to the actors and their relatability, or maybe because it's an ensemble you get to weigh their perspectives for yourself? I imagine some might find Knight of Cups frustrating in how it never escapes Bale's perspective. Of course that was the point.
>>
>>80941368
quite possible. it helps too that i found rooney and others to be better actors for this kind of film, in that they can convey a lot with very little (rooney especially has such an expressive face, she doesn't even need words). but that probably boils down to personal opinion.

one slightly interesting thing though is that it seems very difficult now to say whether someone will like a new malick film based on whether they liked his others. i certainly wouldn't have been excited to see song to song if someone had told me it was just like knight of cups, and i imagine that if i told someone who liked knight of cups that song to song was nothing like it, then i imagine that they too would have very different expectations, despite the fact that they both extremely, for lack of a better term, "malickian" films
>>
>>80940403

>Knight of Cups is a film that feels it has something important to say - much like a twenty-year-old college student who has tried weed for the first time - but in reality, just like said college student, it is speaking nothing but gibberish.

>Perhaps only Christopher Guest can pull off an entirely improvised movie. And perhaps Malick should return to scripts, full-volume voiceovers, and more linear storytelling if he doesn't want to Woody Allen himself and push away fans for good.

>For all its thrumming profundity...has just as much sleepwalking self-parody: all of the actors' pacing and arm-flapping and gazing off into the distance suggests, as much as an art film, the world's longest prescription drug commercial.

>Terrence Malick finally crawls all the way up his own ass with the unwatchable and laughably pretentious Knight of Cups...

Well for me, I can get a lot out of Knight of Cups but I'm also aware that pretty much anyone I know would tell me to turn that drivel off after five minutes. If something life TToL borders on pretension for a lot of people, everything after that isn't worth bringing to their attention. Their loss I'd say, but that is to say I certainly understand your point.

Malick has developed into a genuinely bad filmmaker. Which actually makes it worse that he's making movies at a much faster pace now.

He's one of the few directors that surpass and eternally BTFO all career reviewers that have never picked up a camera in their lives but think they can critique his philosophical musings through film. Hilarious watching plebs scramble around lambasting his cinematography and dialogue.

i do. To the Wonder did little for me. the relationship between Affleck and Kurylenko did not seem real to me. Bardem's crisis of faith, the same. while it was a lovely picture, it didn't move me at all. Knight of Cups, on the other hand, hit pretty close to home. the family troubles, the pilgrim's progress, the stream of relationships, etc.

>>
Poots is best.

wether you like a Malick film or not depends on how the film relates to your own life.

Tree of Life had nothing to do with anything I ever experienced or even could remotely relate to, so it was completely flat to me.

To the Wonder felt closer enough that I could see the emotion and get washed away in many of the scenes, so I enjoyed it, but it didn`t blow me away.

Knight of Cups felt like it was a movie about my life (no, I`m not a rich screenwriter who dates Natalie Portman).

the concept of seeing sparkles of memories of someone`s life where only the meaningful sentences rise up to the surface and everything gets washed away by emotion feel SO REAL. in fact, I would go so far as saying Malick is the only director who has nailed how to translate raw emotion to screen.

when you see him tackle something you have lived, shit just seeps right into your skin and never lets go.

Badlands is a good film, as in, actual film, it was back when malick was still making movies that dumb masses can follow
Days of heaven and Thin Red Line are perfect balance of malick shit and average movie
The New World is good, even if it's just because of period stuff
the tree of life is the ultimate malick expirence. He'll probably never make another movie like that again.
To the wonder fails because it does not have good actors. Affleck, really? This movie is a mystery to movie. Feels like it was written for other actors, but they weren't available?
Knight of Cups has good actors but lacks things Three of Life had.
Song to song is probably the same as Knight Of Cups. I don't know, but I haven't seen it. But it looks like it

Hope malick makes kino with Radegund

Song to Song feels like it has a whole lot more narrative than Knight of Cups.

KoC seemed like a bunch of dreams strung together
Song to Song was more like diary entires.

I found Knight of Cups a little frustrating at times, but enjoyed Song to Song a lot. I also really like all of the actors in Song, but don't really like any in Cups, so maybe that's it
