Subs anon here. I'm working on it now, have all the sources. I've decided to do the signs first, like all the titles throughout the movie and everything. It requires the least set up so I'm doing it now. After that, I'll do the dialogue.

The dialogue looks like it'll be a pain in the ass. I don't think I can OCR the 1h40m WEBRip like I planned, so I might have to do the dialogue line by line. I'll still do it, but fuck, that'll take a lot longer than OCR would.

I don't know if it'll be done this weekend. I hope it will but I'm not 100% sure. If shit does indeed go south, could be next weekend, but hopefully it'll be this weekend.

Lemme help you get started. So, the most helpful thing you could do is transcribe the dialogue subs. You don't need to worry about exact timing-- as long as you're transcribing the subs exactly as they are on the rip, and they're transcribed in chronological order, it'll save me a fuck load of time.

If you can transcribe it, all I'll need to do is figure out fine timing, and we'll be golden. Plus I have both the WEB and the CAM too, so I can always refer back to them if I need a reference for timing.

BTW, the WEBRip I pointed you to is the 1h40m version. It should be useful for any scenes that are difficult to see in the CAM that were cut out of the WEB. CAM is probably still the better way to go, as it's definitely the Funimation translation, whereas the WEB might be slightly fucked with/edited (I would have to watch them side by side to tell, which I don't have the time to do).

There are several reasons. As one person said, the fact that rubber suit means the monster is physically on-screen and not digital, gives a sense that it's more real in your subconcious. There's also the fact that when you rely on real people and not computers, you have to go back to the basics in film like good cinematography techniques to aid you.

Lastly, while Toei and Toho obviously does this shit for the money, it's very clearly done by the actual people on the ground as a labor of love. Actually go watch Zyuranger, the show MMPR was based on. You can tell that real care was put into making it both from a directing and writing standpoint.

I downloaded the BD collection that back in the day Toho made that has every film on it, including official Toho subtitles (so King Caesar's name is King Shisaa like it should be). My only complaint is that in a couple movies the subs are mistimed.

And yeah, the original Gojira ia a masterpiece (though when it came out, it was critically panned in Japan because it was seen as "too soon" considering it pulled current events into the movie). If I were you I'd watch the Criteria Collection's commentary for the film. The guy who does the commentary is I think a historian on movies from Japan in the 50s, and he really goes into detail about what a lot of the scenes are referencing and the impact it had with audiences.
