And that fight with the venom girl, though poorly done technically, had nothing wrong in terms of story coherence as by that point he was still teetering between being Dany Rand and the Iron Fist.

Your knowledge from martial arts and fighting in general seems so come from tv shows and anime shit because weight matters a lot.
There's a reason there are weight classes in every single competitive fighting sport. It's because no matter how good your technique is, if you're a 120 lbs woman, it doesn't matter how you twist a 250 lbs dude's arm. You can look up real fights with huge weight differences online and it's so obvious that the big guy can just grab you and smash your head into the ground with no fighting experience.

But that was because their technique was shit. Early MMA had small fighters beating larger fighters who didn't know ground-fighting. Of course everybody trains it now so it's no longer an advantage, but that's not true in fictional settings.
