Now, a smelly vagina itself may not actually mean the woman is unhygienic. Some women actually over clean their vagina with soaps that can alter the pH themselves. This in turn leads to a smell that causes the woman to believe she should clean even more. The solution to something like this would be to use a pH stabilizing cream and to lay off for a bit on soaps. A healthy vagina should be fairly self-cleaning as the mucus maintains a proper pH and no bacteria overgrows another.
