He probably is, Morgoth is INCREDIBLY weak. A total shadow compared to his former self: Melkor. The first to be created and the mightiest of all creations.

STOP, MY INVINCIBLE SON

Morgoth wasn't that "strong" at the end because of how much of his essence he'd used in corrupting ME. Also keep in mind, when they say Sauron is strong, they mean him and his whiplashed army, not just him personally

Sauron did not create anything he just used morgoth's creations to achieve his goals which he failed in the end

he created the one ring...
and through deception he destroyed almost all of the numenor.
He's pretty evil on his own

No, he transferred his power into the fabric of reality in an attempt to corrupt the whole world. That's how Tulkas was able to beat him up, Melkor at full power was a match for all the other Vala at once.

I always felt that the biggest missed story idea in Tolk's work is in not making the Arkenstone be the lost Silmaril of Maedros. It would explain why the Elves were willing to go to war over it, something that makes zero sense in the Hobbit (the Elves want some gold? What? Why?).

Fear is one of Melkor's downsides, he ran from Tulkas without ever confronting him.
>>
>>80670286
he will be yes. At the end of times. But then he will be defeated and the race of men finally finds redemption:

>According to the prophecy, Morgoth will discover how to break the Door of Night, and will blacken the Sun and the Moon. For the love of these, Eärendil will return from the sky and shall meet Tulkas, Manwë, Eönwë (with the old version of his name Fionwe) and Túrin Turambar on the plains of Valinor.
>There the forces of the Valar shall fight against Melkor and The Dark Powers. Tulkas will wrestle with Morgoth, but it will be by the hand of Túrin that finally death and destruction will be dealt to Melkor. Túrin will run his black sword Gurthang (Iron of Death) through Melkor's heart, thus avenging the Children of Húrin (Sindarin: Hîn Húrin) and all the fallen (In the end of The Hiding of Valinor Eönwë, and not Turin, kills Morgoth). Then the three Silmarils will be recovered from the Earth, sea, and sky, then Fëanor taking them and will break, and with their fire Yavanna will rekindle the Two Trees, and a great light shall come forth, and Pelóri Mountains will be levelled. The battle will end and renew Arda's existence: all the Elves will awaken and the Powers will be young again.
>Following this, there will be a Second Music of the Ainur. This song will sing into being a new world. Men and Elves will sing it with the Ainur. It is unknown what the fate of the old races, or of the old world, will be in the new one. However, It is worth noting that the Dwarves believe that after the greatest battle of all time, they will help the Vala, Mahal, rebuild Arda. For though Mandos prophesied it, even the Ainur do not know anything of the second world or the Second Music. All the Ainur know is that the Second Music will be greater than the First Music.

It's unclear, but given the existence of Shelob presumably Ungoliant lived long enough to breed at least.

he has a ship, with which he can fly and he has a glowing silmaril on his armor or helmet, i don't remember. He sails the sky every night and has become the morning star
>>
>>80670732
>who is this dude in sick armor with a crown of 3 gems?
>>
>>80670663

There's literally a magic elf flying around a spaceship that looks like a giant glowing white magical longboat and atop his brow on a circlet sits one of the most powerful and rare magic artifact gems ever created and responsible for most of the chaos that occured in the universe just fighting to posess it.

You can look up during nightfall on Middle-Earth and see his ship as a bright light in the sky that sometimes comes and goes as he sails around the universe.

His crowning achievement was battling and defeating a Dragon so big it blotted out the entire sun when it was in the sky and when it fell it destroyed a mountain range. He did this flying alongside an army of eagles with the King of Eagles himself who is like the size of a 747 Boeing. Nobody knows HOW he killed the dragon, it's just left to the readers imagination that he did something with the silmarillion and his flying longboat blessed by fucking VARDA the Goddess of Stars herself.
>>
>>80670732
morgoth
he has the three silmaril visibly on his crown
>>
>>80670754

She's definitely part of Creation, the Vala didn't know where she came from but presumably she was caused by Melkor's marring of Arda in some way.
>>
>>80670736

The ring just enhances what the user is good at. Hobbits turn invisible and Sauron turns into a big guy
>>
>>80670775
>>80670787

Then who's that with UIngoliant under CE? Surely it can't mean Ungoliant is CE, she was an animal, that's Neutral in D&D terms.

But ok, putting Melkor under NE is as stupid as putting Sauron there.
>>
>>80670680
does it seriously imply Tulkas will die? I just thought Melkor will be double teamed
>>
>>80670829

Ungoliant is definitely CE. She's not an animal, she's an evil entity born from the Void itself whose webs absorb light leaving pitch blackness around her.

She also feasts on pure light itself.
>>
>>80670812

Sauron's natural form after the fall of Numenor was as a Big Guy, the ring didn't "do" anything to Sauron, he was it's master. It just gave him access to the power he placed in it, and also allowed him to channel the "Morgoth Element" that was particularly intense in gold (hence the love of gold by the Dragons).

>>
>>80670877

Idk if she demonstrates intelligence. Also, Melkor is the very definition of CE, he hates reality and wants to destroy it. I'd put Ungoliant under NE if you must have her on the chart, but again I don't think animals have alignment, even when they're bred for violence.

I believe she was literally the Void preexisting creation (which is the case in most mythologies too)

Eru is the single creator
>>
>>80671358

Eru created gold, but Melkor is the one who placed his evil power into it, and it was this power that Sauron was tapping in to.
>>
You guys wanna know what's worst?

Sauron spent pretty much the entire second age slowly and painfully corrupting men which finally climaxed when he convinced Numenoreans to invade Aman.

And what happened? Fucking Eru intervened and said "fuck you". Talk about Deus ex machina. This is why Tom Bombadil didn't care. He knew no matter what, God would just intervene and save everything. What a fucking ripoff.

Sauron was the true underdog of the entire series.

Here's a question about the nature of the Ring: Sauron poured most of his power into it, because the Master Ring had to be more powerful than the other Rings of Power. But the Rings of Power amplify the natural power of their users, so who was more powerful: Sauron before forging the Ring, or Sauron with the Ring on his finger?
>>
>>80672161

You must admit its a more elegant solution to the problem of evil than the Christian one, which blames hurricanes and mosquitos on a rib-woman being tricked by an evil snek into eating a magic forbidden donut.

sauron with the ring on his finger, because he was master of the other rings and ringbearers.
The concept of power is a little more vague with Tolkien than it is with comic book writers for example
power=influence over the natural world and the hearts and minds of people basically
>>
>>80672255

Sauron after, with his ring. Not as powerful as he'd hoped, since the Elves and Dwarfs resisted corruption, but the ring amplified his power and as long as he had it, he had his original power as well.

Not really, his kingship is itself a source of great power for him. For example, anyone can use Kingsweed as a salve, but only the rightful King can use to heal serious injuries. Sonething like that.

Gil-galad and Elendil fought against Sauron in a 2v1, they managed to bring him down and mortally wound his body (can't kill a Maia), but at the cost of their lives. Gil-galad in particular died because Sauron burned him to death with his hand, I like to think he just grabbed his head with his hand and burned it to a crisp.

Then Isildur took the broken Narsil and removed the Ring and the finger from Sauron's hand, and his spirit got diminished and fled to somewhere in the east or the far north.
>>
>>80675662
yes, all power that lay in all of the rings was somehow boung to the one ring in some (esotheric) way
I always imagined it was because sauron gave the elves the knowledge of how to create the magic rings and with the one ring gone, the knowlegde connecting them to their power was lost too (somehow....)

>"His might was greatest of all things in this world." - Morgoth long after he was corrupted.

Correct though, he lost most of his real power corrupting the world. Back in the day he singlehandedly took on all the forces of Valinor by himself and won.

>Sauron was become now a sorcerer of dreadful power, master of shadows and of phantoms, foul in wisdom, cruel in strength, misshaping what he touched, twisting what he ruled, lord of werewolves; his dominion was torment.

Sauron was still as powerful as he was before. The only thing was his form diminished and he couldn't appear beautiful-looking anymore. With the Ring though he was still ferocious.

Ungoliant being a Lovecraftian demonspider from beyond the Void was a very old concept that Tolkien dropped because he thought it was dumb.

The final legendarium has Ungoliant being a creation of Melkor. When he demanded service, she said no and fled before he could kill her. Being too busy with fighting literally every one of Eru's servants, he didn't give chase.

She was going to come back until the Siege of Otumno, where Melkor was beaten but at a massive cost to the Valar, and she figured he was done for and kept hiding. When Melkor returned she offered to help him since he was doing really well at that point. He agreed and they went into Aman together. She cast shadowy webs that hid his position while he went around killing and destroying, killing the great Elf-warrior king Finwe with complete ease, then draining the Valar's Two Trees, basically entities maintaining the earth's symmetry. Ungoliant drank their sap and Melkor cast flames all over Aman and crushed the continent itself, combined with the Two Trees being destroyed and their cataclysmic effects this sunk the continent, wiped out numerous enemies of his, and sent the Valar running.

They returned to the outskirts of Angband and Ungoliant suddenly grew to a massive size and power from consuming the sap of the Trees, while Melkor was exhausted after killing Valar and destroying continents, and she demanded he give over the jewels. (P1)

Part 2. To appease her he did, but refused to give up the Silmarils. She then bound him in web before he could attack or flee and tortured him, and was planning to eat him before he called for his Balrogs. He didn't "scream helplessly" and the Balrogs heard that, it's a common misinterpretation and partly based on an old passage not being translated correctly from thought to paper by Chris Tolkien. He called for help and the Balrogs answered, all of them arriving and whipping Ungoliant away while Melkor laughed at her. She fled for good and was never seen again in Middle-earth, though it was speculated she took up residence on an isolated island where she could hide from Melkor and later Sauron and their mutual wrath. She became so hungry in her new godjuice form that she began eating her offspring and they fled across Middle-earth from her, and ultimately Ungoliant either faded away or devoured herself.

Not only was Melkor exhausted from battling the Valar, but Ungoliant was in fact >>80676854
roided up on godjuice. It also makes sense that he would get desperate at her torturing hands, because Melkor was cursed with full mortality for becoming an enemy of the Valar. It's weird how this works, because apparently some Valar are immortal and some are not, and some Maiar are immortal and some are not. For whatever reason, Melkor, while stronger than the rest of the Valar combined, was mortal by this point, and if he died, it was permanent game over. Understandable he didn't want that to happen, and the only twp things in the world that terrified him were the thought of dying and the thought that he may not be more powerful than Eru after all.

There you go /tv/, enjoy your lesson on Tolkien lore for the day.

>In the book after he curbstomps the two most powerful warriors the West has singlehandedly, he lets his guard down and thinks he's won, when Isildur takes him by surprise and gets a lucky slice on his Ring finger.

Why do people post their bullshit and not expect it to be called out?

>Gilgalad and Elendil are slain in the act of slaying Sauron. Isildur, Elendil's son, cuts the ring from Sauron's hand, and his power departs, and his spirit flees into the shadows.
Letter 131.

>By the end of the Third Age (though actually much weaker than before) he claimed to be Morgoth returned
Letter 183
>>
>>80677398
>She most definitely was not under his command or his creation
Did you even read your own link?

>In the Later Silmarillion, as documented in Morgoth's Ring and War of the Jewels, Ungoliant is explicitly identified as one of Melkor's servants who abandoned him prior to settling in Avathar. She is also depicted as starving to the brink of death during her time in Avathar, cut off from the light of the Valar by her own webs of darkness. She is also shown to fear her master, and hides desperately from Melkor when she first sees him approaching her lair. She initially refuses to emerge (believing Melkor plans to murder her for deserting him) until he offers her an assortment of gems he had stolen from the Noldor. She then regains the strength needed to destroy the Two Trees, which she does alone while Melkor waits near Avathar.
>>
>>80677398
>>80677574
No, the only authority for lore you should trust are the books themselves, and even then Chris has said that his interpretation of his father's ideas may not be entirely accurate, and that you have to take it with a grain of salt.

According to the actual lore, right from the book itself, word for word, Ungoliant was a spirit corrupted by Melkor that rejected his service and fled from him, taking on the form of a spider. While weaker than Melkor or Sauron, the Valar noted her strange power of "Unlight", which was that she could consume light and leave darkness behind, which made her difficult to track and find.

Also even after many editions LoTR, a fairly simple book compared to simarillion, wasn't considered to be that word accurate by Tolkien. God knows what he'd make of a Simarillion in print.
>>
>>80677751
>>80677795
Yeah, Tolkiengateway is all about book lore. LOTR Wiki is a shitshow where lore is taken from multiple sources and crammed into one, though they favor the movie lore as they're mainly a wiki for PJ's trilogy.

Tolkiengateway is more accurate overall, but there are still some really shitty or inaccurate sections with no sourcing or sources from much older works of Tolkien that were long since surpassed in terms of "canonicity", though outside of The Hobbit and LOTR Tolkien's books have a self-admitted looseness in what is genuinely canonical or not, because so much of it isn't from Tolkien himself.

So we've gone from " he lets his guard down and thinks he's won" to ""They wounded him and he did in fact stop fighting."

>>
>>80677833
Great as he was as an author, he had a problem of indecisiveness, sometimes bordering on OCD. He would constantly go back and change ideas or rework them or shake things up and even by the end he still wasn't fully satisfied with what he wrote. The Silmarillion would be a fucking nightmare for him.

>Legolas have I ever told you about my father Oropher? In the Battle of Dagorland during the War of the Last Alliance refused to place his army under the command of the High King of Noldor, Gil-Galad, over some ancient feud. Instead, disobeying the battle plan, he abandoned his elevated position and he charged with his light infantry straight into the enemy lines on the valley bellow to satiate his inferiority complex. Our people perished like flies on what today is know as the Dead Marshes, in fact this is how your mother died and she probably is still floating facedown on some dirty puddle over there. What few of us remained were only saved because of the valiant intervention of the Dwarven and Noldor armies that rushed to our aid and winning the battle. Then I made up some bullshit story about fire dragons of the north and Gundabad to cover up our shame. Never trust the dwarves son, they are scum
>>
>>80677910
>Then Gil-galad and Elendil passed into Mordor and encompassed the stronghold of Sauron; and they laid siege to it for seven years, and suffered grievous loss by fire and by the darts and bolts of the Enemy, and Sauron sent many sorties against them.

>But at the last the siege was so strait that Sauron himself came forth; and he wrestled with Gil-galad and Elendil, and they both were slain, and the sword of Elendil broke under him as he fell. But Sauron also was thrown down, and with the hilt-shard of Narsil Isildur cut the Ruling Ring from the hand of Sauron and took it for his own.

>The Silvan Elves were hardy and valiant, but ill-equipped with armour or weapons in comparison with the Eldar of the West; also they were independent, and not disposed to place themselves under the supreme command of Gil-galad. Their losses were thus more grievous than they need have been, even in that terrible war. Malgalad and more than half his following perished in the great battle of the Dagorlad, being cut off from the main host and driven into the Dead Marshes. Oropher was slain in the first assault upon Mordor, rushing forward at the head of his most doughty warriors before Gil-galad had given the signal for the advance. Thranduil his son survived, but when the war ended and Sauron was slain (as it seemed) he led back home barely a third of the army that had marched to war.

>>
>>80680158
to give the Free People an edge. Still even as the White Gandalf says that if Sauron killed him he wouldn't be able to come back. maybe it has to do with a balrog being lesser to Sauron or something, I still don't know and I've read the books multiple times
>>
>>80681258
Sort of both. Dwarves weren't more resilient, moreso they were more stubborn and hard-headed, and they were too concerned with mining and gem-greed to bother with Sauron if he couldn't promise them wealth. Sauron did promise some dwarves wealth, and some dwarves fought for him.

Celebrimbor's rings were also intentionally gimped by Sauron and weren't perfect to begin with. Their only purpose was to serve as mild-altering corruptors for Sauron's One Ring, and Celebrimbor's craftsmanship was shitty, so shitty that when Sauron revealed his darklordness he tortured Celebrimbor then cut off his head and mounted it on a banner in front of his legions while they fucked up the elves. The Shadow of Autism game is inaccurate about a lot of things, but it's accurate on the fact that Sauron really really really hated Celebrimbor and blamed him for the fact that his ring control plan didn't work.

also worth noting that there were actually only three people that Sauron ever truly despised: Luthien, Celebrimbor, and Isildur. Two of them were killed, one in a horrible way, and Luthien only lived because a warhound of Valinor saved her, but even then the power of Sauron's hatred for her literally knocked her unconscious. This was a chick who could stand in front of Morgoth and seduce him, but as soon as she got near Sauron she felt dead because of how much malice he had for her.
