Saw this in a theater in Boston during its limited theatrical release. The audience was me and two other people. It was incredibly atmospheric. The sound design and cinematography were all excellent and part of the experience. It was disorienting as fuck. Great theater going experience. Shame more people didn't get to experience it on the big screen.

I liked it but I would have liked it more if the scenes where she captures them in the water were shot literally. I guess it was supposed to be an artistic interpretation of whatever really happened and it was neat but it took me out of the film.

I thought it was brilliantl. The film is great at leaving a lot to the imagination, in order to cause a truly alien atmosphere. You don't really know what the aliens perceive, or even if they concieve existence in the same way... contrasted with the grim view it shows us of human day to day. It's really something special.

It's a really straightforward movie, it's not hard to understand what's going on. You don't need to know the exact details of how the harvesting works, if that's what you mean. It's minimal but I wouldn't call it "lazy writing," there's no good way to dump a bunch of exposition about bullshit alien technology, and no good reason to do it.

This sort of thinking is so detrimental. It's ok to have mystery... a mysterious atmosphere. Something not being directly explained is not a "plot hole". Especially in a film like this.

There are aspects of the book that deal primarily with Glazer's themes. I think these aspects, what it means to be alien, are what spoke to him more than some ham-fisted (no pun intended) allegory. I thought that he realized the strangeness of such an experience, both from a human and, perhaps, an alien POV brilliantly.

The time between Birth and UTS was kind of long.

One thing that impressed me about this film was that the deformed guy was a real person. I assumed it was just makeup. So reading an article about him and learning more about him afterwards was pretty cool.

Apparently he took friends to see it without telling them he was in it. Imagine being one of those people and watching that really weird hour and wondering why the heck he made you see it and then suddenly he gets in the van and you get to see your freakish friend's dick flapping in the breeze as he runs naked through a field.

I loved this movie but I need some clarification on one scene:

Scarjo is ready to attempt real, consensual intercourse that doesn't involve turning the man into a husk. She's getting frisky with the older guy that takes her in when she's on the run. He goes to put it in and notices something's wrong. She nearly panics, slides to the end of the bed, and grabs a lamp to illuminate her crotch, inspecting her genitals, before a hard cut to the next scene.

This was meant to imply she didn't have a vagina, right? Like there was just nothing there because she'd never actually need it? I mean she had nipples.

Heat is frequently used as a metaphor for intimacy which ScarJo spends the entire movie searching for. People often ask if she is cold. She inspects her body in a heat lamp. In her search for intimacy, she ends up raped. In her search for heat, she ends up immolated.

Disrobing is used as a metaphor for revealing the true self. Clothing is another layer of skin that covers what is really inside. ScarJo wears a fur coat, which is literally the skin of an animal. In the end she becomes truly exposed, removing even her skin.

I don't know if I liked it or not. It was interesting, but also kind of awkward.

I think if I didn't know the Glasgow accent well it would have been better, as I'm guessing the intention was to make it deliberately hard to understand as if you're hearing things as she is.
