Thoughts on this ?

Just back from first viewing and I'm genuinely considering a 2nd run

Phenomenal imo
>>
Absolutely awful. One of the worst movies I've ever seen and I'm not just saying that to bait.
>>
it's great. looks, sound and theme are all amazing.
i consider this scarletts johansen's last real performance.

>>80552070

Really?

Honestly, you liked it?
>>
>>80552109
why would i lie?
>>
>>80552070
Scarlett was good in it because she played an alien who didn't understand human emotions.
>>
it's a great movie, only idiots dislike it
>>
The ending was ok, and the parts she shows her tits and leads them through the floor are ok. But the rest was just fucking boring imo.

Not one person I know liked it.

I fucking hate the scottish.

What's not to like? Great cinematography, great music, creepy and unique atmosphere, interesting style of filming (hidden cameras, actual footages), original and unseen concept.
>>
>>80552208
That the people they used for the hidden camera bits were fucking boring.

its like

hollywood tries doing a cheap surrealist movie

just watch authentic surrealist films. possession (1981) is similar in a lot of ways to under the skin.

Scottish myself and I'm torn on how I felt with the accent overall it's just so fucking harsh sounding in the film, although I read the guys they got didn't know it was being filmed.

Do you mean by style or storywise? There aren't many films like this but Cronenberg films have a somewhat similar creepy atmosphere in my opinion.
>>
>>80552061
Unironically this. It took the concept "show instead of tell" and tried to sustain a 2 hour movie from it.

The music was really good at being spooky though.

That underwater scene

>>
>>80552645
Well first off what the fuck because it is not on Netflix.

Second, "back from first viewing" makes it sound like you went to the theater. You generally don't leave your house to watch movies.
>>
>>80551990

Saw this in a theater in Boston during its limited theatrical release. The audience was me and two other people. It was incredibly atmospheric. The sound design and cinematography were all excellent and part of the experience. It was disorienting as fuck. Great theater going experience. Shame more people didn't get to experience it on the big screen.
>>
I liked it but I would have liked it more if the scenes where she captures them in the water were shot literally. I guess it was supposed to be an artistic interpretation of whatever really happened and it was neat but it took me out of the film.
>>
>>80552802
This twat for real ?

List one of your favourite movies I'm curious
>>
>>80552271
that story is baloney. there were like 2 people who were asked for directions

the ones who got in the car were obviously actors because they get naked and go to an all black sound stage.

and yeah she probably fell on a real street with real people but there were massive cameras all around so people were probably tipped off.
>>
>>80552902
when they got in the car there was a crew that told them what was going on
>>
>>80552896
what? they pretty pretty literal. She ensares them then something about the ensare fluid sucks the meat out of them then they literally show meat on a conveyor belt. Did they need to have the guys hooked up to massive tubes in their asses sucking out their organs?
>>
>>80552860
It's on the EU Netflix not sure about NA.
>>
>>80552940
and they just happened to be good actors too? c'mon man use your head

I don't usually get freaked out when I'm just watching films in my room, but that underwater scene where the first guy just crunches up like paper, that freaked me out.

The only other time i was genuinely scared watching a film in my room was that fucked up face in Inland Empire, fuck that.

I thought it was brilliantl. The film is great at leaving a lot to the imagination, in order to cause a truly alien atmosphere. You don't really know what the aliens perceive, or even if they concieve existence in the same way... contrasted with the grim view it shows us of human day to day. It's really something special.

>>
>>80556582

>>
>>80552061
>>80552719
How can people be this much of a pleb and still breathe on their own?
>>
>>80553383

The book and movie are COMPLETELY separate. The movie is about what it means to be alien (i.e. - alienation) both from the POV of the alien and the viewer and the book was part satire of the meat industry and part surreal sci-fi.
>>
>>80556912
>meat industry
aaaah I get it. I might actually read it then, sounds interesting. Thanks
>>
>>80556461
It's a really straightforward movie, it's not hard to understand what's going on. You don't need to know the exact details of how the harvesting works, if that's what you mean. It's minimal but I wouldn't call it "lazy writing," there's no good way to dump a bunch of exposition about bullshit alien technology, and no good reason to do it.
>>
>>80556912
Haven't read the book but it honestly sounds a lot better than the movie. I think movies can't properly adapt books anyway so it's just as well it did its own thing, but I have to wonder why even bother making it an adaptation? Why use the title?

I'm going to guess they do this shit as part of some weird business deal to advertise a largely unrelated book. That's the only way it makes sense.
>>
I really realy like Under The Skin.
It's kind of disheartening to see the amount of people who get mad because the movie doesn't explicitly show or talk about the technology behind the human harvesting. It honestly does not matter. That's not what the story is about.
This sort of thinking is so detrimental. It's ok to have mystery... a mysterious atmosphere. Something not being directly explained is not a "plot hole". Especially in a film like this.
You people are the reason that overt expositional dialogue taints so many otherwise promising films recently.
>>
>>80554658
What is this Ex Drummer thing about? Is there a reason you brought it up in this particular thread?
>>
>>80556630
I love when people call things pretentious just because they are slow and have some weird visuals.

kys
>>
>>80554599
I wish I'd known to do this before I wasted two hours of my life on this shit.

The music already sounds like it's on fastforward too. Just the same repetitive wheedle-deedle-dee shit.
>>
>>80552968
Didn't know Netflix had different libraries across regions. That would explain a lot then.
>>
>>80557052
Jonathan Glazer was trying to get this movie made for almost 10 years, I think ultimately he just had to shoot it on a much lower budget than originally intended.

I like the movie a lot on its own terms, but it probably would've been very different if they'd had more money.
>>
>>80557090
>>80557052
The exact details of the harvesting aren't the point; the point is, it's a legitimate question to ask whether what we're seeing on screen is literally supposed to be what is happening, or if it is a metaphor for what is happening. I took it to be a metaphor but people in the thread are saying it is a spaceship or some alien-built environment.

Then there are the people who just say it's a dumb question and in response that that I can only say fuk u fagget
>>
>>80557052

There are aspects of the book that deal primarily with Glazer's themes. I think these aspects, what it means to be alien, are what spoke to him more than some ham-fisted (no pun intended) allegory. I thought that he realized the strangeness of such an experience, both from a human and, perhaps, an alien POV brilliantly.

The film is utterly separate from the book but I thought its story was even more compelling.
>>
>>80557090
I don't have a problem with mystery. I have a problem with it being so pointlessly slow that it feels like it's just trying to waste the viewer's time. I don't need to see ScarJo taking a full minute and a half to try and eat a bite of cake.
>>
>>80557113

>pointlessly slow

>>
>>80555819
I hope he makes another film soon.

The time between Birth and UTS was kind of long.
>>
One thing that impressed me about this film was that the deformed guy was a real person. I assumed it was just makeup. So reading an article about him and learning more about him afterwards was pretty cool.

Apparently he took friends to see it without telling them he was in it. Imagine being one of those people and watching that really weird hour and wondering why the heck he made you see it and then suddenly he gets in the van and you get to see your freakish friend's dick flapping in the breeze as he runs naked through a field.
>>
>>80557475
A lot of people say Drive is a slow film but it had a lot more to chew on than Under the Skin.

I'd take any Refn over UTS.
>>
>>80556851
You know, you don't look any better than them when you just call them a pleb and don't offer any reasons why you liked it.
>>
>>80557302
People are literally getting harvested and killed. It's visualized in a trippy way because the characters are experiencing something they can't comprehend, kind of like the mind-break sequence at the end of 2001: A Space Odyssey. At least that's how I took it

It's worth noting that it's also a very low-budget movie, so like a lot of other art films, some of the ambiguity & surrealism is as much a matter of financial necessity as artistic intention. But to me those scenes were very creepy & effective, I thought they pulled it off well
>>
>>80557634
They didn't give any reasons why they didn't at all.
>>
Friendly reminder ScarJo is a terrible actress.

>hurr muh indie Lost in Translation was ep1k!!1!
No, she was fucking garbage in that too. Bill Murray carried the film.

She fucked Woody Allen once and he had no choice but to give her roles. That's the sole reason she gained "acclaim."
>>
>>80557663
I also took it to be an artistic representation of the experience rather than a literal view of what was happening. It was very cool. Just different from the rest of the film which was pretty much what you saw on screen was actually what was happening.
>>
>>80557449
I mean, it's not all that deep, but it does actually have some substance and a purpose. I didn't find it nearly as pretentious as, say, almost any refn film.
>>
>>80557848
Would you like some salsa for that chip mate?

Also who people fuck is not related to whether they are good actors
>>
>>80558001
No, but most aspies unironically believe there is a correlation between landing roles and being good at acting. Hence, said aspie would believe ScarJo's monotone raspy voice deadpan face "acting" is actually good.

Her early career was just playing the same bored disaffected chick over and over. Go, that one set in Japan, etc. But I guess she figured she coasted on Jewish nepotism for long enough and she took some acting classes, she a bit better now.
>>
>>80559440
that's it? No way.
There was too much shit going on in that movie.
>>
>>80559534
>Your boredom is more of a reflection of yourself than the movies you blame for it.
Yeah, because I find all movies boring.

Can someone post the naked webm now please?

I'm oversimplifying it, but basically all the crazy imagery stems from the infidelity. The wife feels like her body has been tainted, she acts out in weird ways and the marriage gets very strained, the husband pictures her sleeping with some disgusting creature which has infected her, etc.

Kind of similar to the way "Eraserhead" makes a nightmare out of conception & fatherhood, but focused on cheating and a ruined marriage. At least that's how I took it

That poster made me realize something: Antonio Banderas looks a lot like Sean Connery during his Bond days.
>>
>>80556986
It's never made clear in the movie that they are being harvested, or that their insides are being eaten. Or that scarjos character is even alien for that matter. If it wasn't for being familiar with the book then you would have evidence for none of this.
>>
nothing happens : the movie
>>
>>80561851
I never read the book and I honestly didn't have any trouble following it. To be fair though, I was aware it was a movie about aliens when I decided to watch it
>>
>>80560492
I should rewatch it with that in mind.
I want to ask about the ending of the movie then, but I'm about to fall asleep.
>>
>>80561970
>I was aware it was a movie about aliens when I decided to watch it
GEE I WONDER HOW YOU KNEW THAT THEN
>>
>>80562020
Where did you see this movie, though? I thought that was pretty much in the plot description

I think you're just being obtuse though. They didn't spell everything out in dialogue, the approach was kinda artsy, but the events of the plot were clear and straightforward to me and I didn't know anything other than "ScarJo plays an alien" going in
>>
>>80560243
You can't because this board is run by Christian and Muslim moderators. They don't thinks its okay to post the nudity in the very things they are discussing. Its okay to post child actor cunny threads tho!

Great OST

I loved this movie but I need some clarification on one scene:

Scarjo is ready to attempt real, consensual intercourse that doesn't involve turning the man into a husk. She's getting frisky with the older guy that takes her in when she's on the run. He goes to put it in and notices something's wrong. She nearly panics, slides to the end of the bed, and grabs a lamp to illuminate her crotch, inspecting her genitals, before a hard cut to the next scene.

This was meant to imply she didn't have a vagina, right? Like there was just nothing there because she'd never actually need it? I mean she had nipples.

Is it just me or was ScarJo a bit chubby in this movie? Not that I minded.

Wait what? Is this now in theaters? I saw it two years ago
>>

Dude, she always was
>>
>>80563096
I thought it implied that she panicked that he might realise she's alien and was checking to see that everything was alright "down there" ?

The logger had a brief tustle with her and her entire disguise was compromised. A quick dicking would blow a hole in that disguise.
>>

Oh?
Any other movies I can see her naked in, then?

Hey guys, wanna know something?

I jacked it to scarjo in this movie!

As much as this movie bored me, I realize that different films have different impacts on some people. I'm sure there are films that I've loved that you absolutely despised, as well. Doesn't mean I won't challenge your opinion, because what fun is this world without conflict, but what it means is that I'm not doing it out of hate. It means I genuinely want to understand you better.

am i alone in thinking that she looks the cutest and hottest in this movie because she changed her body appearance to look more 'average' ?

>>80552680
i don't like how she looks here for example, haircut asside. Just too glamorous

I loved her look in the movie though while she was wearing those cheap clothes and that messy haircut and slightly chubby body. Anyone else ?

What about Mysterious Skin?

What about Under the Mysterious Skin I Live In?
>>
The dead woman at the beginning of the film is another ScarJo bot. That is why the white van is already parked on the road by her body. She likely had a similar emotional arc to the ScarJo bot featured in the film, resulting in her own death. The bots are probably expected to ultimately malfunction by their handlers, resulting in an endless cycle of being born, suffering, and dying.

Heat is frequently used as a metaphor for intimacy which ScarJo spends the entire movie searching for. People often ask if she is cold. She inspects her body in a heat lamp. In her search for intimacy, she ends up raped. In her search for heat, she ends up immolated.

Disrobing is used as a metaphor for revealing the true self. Clothing is another layer of skin that covers what is really inside. ScarJo wears a fur coat, which is literally the skin of an animal. In the end she becomes truly exposed, removing even her skin.

symbolism truly is the cancer of art films. You just described why I didn't like the movie. If only there was an attempt at conveying all that through the visuals and not cheap symbolism and sci-fi bait elements. Might as well read a book if that's the appeal lol.
>>
>>80573136
>If only there was an attempt at conveying all that through the visuals and not cheap symbolism

It movies all symbolism is conveyed through either visuals or sound.

I don't know if I liked it or not. It was interesting, but also kind of awkward.

I think if I didn't know the Glasgow accent well it would have been better, as I'm guessing the intention was to make it deliberately hard to understand as if you're hearing things as she is.
>>
>People acting like it was really abstract and complex

I thought it was a pretty straightforward plot honestly. It just didn't have much dialogue.
>>
I think this is the only movie that I dropped because it was too boring.
>>
Does anyone else get hard at the thought of being turned into a husk by scarjo?

It wasn't great, but aesthetic as hell, cool concept, good music, very well shot

it was worth seeing once

The scenes with non actors kind of made me uncomfortable, especially the scene when she falls.

The alium parts were cool as shit.
