Prequels are the worst meme to ever rear their head upon movies or media as a whole.

There's never any real tension or mystery, because you know at leas the general outline of what will happen because of the movies that take place chronologically after it already. And at the same time, prequels are far more limited in what can be done with storytelling, because it all has to line up with the original story and not cause any plotholes. Much more restrictive. These reasons are why prequels almost always end up being totally underwhelming, with their own enjoyability coming from watching them and saying "oooh look at THIS little bit of the movie that foreshadows that thing from the future movie!"

You didn't watch the movie carefully enough. There are two times that Ripley "goes back for the cat" (except she really doesn't).

First, the cat jump-scares her while she's up on the bridge, when things are quiet and she's getting the shuttle ready alone, by herself. The cat is nearby, it doesn't run far off, and she has the equipment and the few seconds to collect it, so she does so. The shuttle is basically ready and she knows it, so she can dink around for a few more seconds. She doesn't go OUT OF HER WAY this time, really, to collect the cat, it was an afterthought. If you know your survival is squared away as best it can be, then it is quite natural for any pet owner to grab the pet, if it's easy to do so and there is no immediate threat (that you know of) to yourself or the other humans. This was the case here.

the SECOND time, the time you're probably thinking of, she basically totes the cat with her wherever she's going, UNTIL the immediate threat (the alien) literally *blocks her path* into the escape shuttle. This is where she puts the cat down ,and that's pretty much where the cat stays. the cat is PRETTY MUCH on the way back to the shuttle, when she goes back. It's pretty much a linear path, which is why she's so afraid and pissed off when the self-destruct won't turn off: at this point, she figure's she's dead in a few minutes no matter what, but she still has to try getting into the shuttle.

She goes back to the same spot (just in front fo the shuttle), and this time the alien doesn't appear to be there. Again, in a completely natural response (consider your animal reaction when you're the only human left for billions of miles in any direction), and since it's EASY and ON HER WAY, she grabs up the companion animal/pet.

Ripley doesn't "go back for the cat". She DOES "go back" for Newt, in the sequel.

5 years ago he was going to do a sequel to Prometheus that wouldn't feature Aliens as the main thing but then decided to abandon that idea and just do another Alien movie because fans wanted more Alien.

Now he has decided that he actually does want to make the adandoned sequel and is going to call it Alien: Awakening or whatever the title is.

Either way I am happy that we will get to see more of the backstory that he wanted to do but what gets me annoyed is that he should have made that first and then done Alien: Covenant but he tried to please the fans I guess.
