Renly was surrounded by people aching to take a piece of the pie. He couldnt make an alliance with "the king of the north" even if he wanted too.

You must understand that Robb was actually rebelling against the crown from their perspective, while in reality Robb was just in a war with the Lannisters for killing Ned.

The problem in this conflict was that Robb got praised by his vassals as the King and Renly aswell.

That's the point. Renly looks like he's this super awesome guy with all the looks, charisma, and soldiers needed to win the war but he gets done in by a simple assassination and his faction collapses. He's a false flag red herring to the other groups who actually fight in the war

King Robb has total independence north of Moat Cailin, which would've given the Riverlands back to Renly and would've helped him avoid a war for that part of the kingdom. Robb would pay Renly no taxes, but would swear ally with Renly in any future wars if necessary.

Renly would have the rest of the 6 kingdoms and presumably after killing Stannis and Joffrey, the North would've partnered up with taking own the Greyjoys.
